Will the world ever stop being anti-intellectual?

One of the most aggravating things to me in this world has to be the absolutely rampant anti-intellectualism that dominates so many conversations and debates, and its influence just seems to be expanding. Do you think there will ever actually be a time when this ends? I'd hope so once people become more educated and cultural...

pingveno,

I think it's becoming better overall, not worse. Yes, there's a populism issue at the moment, but this is far from the first time that's happened. We're dealing with the introduction of an entire new means of communication, online media in general and social media more specifically. That brings all new hazards and benefits that need to be dealt with.

The era after the printing press was developed brought intellectual development, but it also sparked revolutions. Those didn't always wind up with that right people getting into power. It took a while for society to adapt and stabilize. I expect the same will happen with Internet communication.

I'm also hopeful because studies have shown that successive generations generally improve their abilities in abstract thinking. (I'm having trouble sourcing that statement, unfortunately). That's important for the economy because the jobs of the future will need that abstract thinking. At least in my experience, it also acts as a bulwark against bad actors because people with poorer abstract thinking abilities tend to be more gullible, at least when it comes to lies that they like.

pingveno,

Don't panic. Think globally, act locally. Help the next generation be better than your own. Know that successive generations are likely to keep improving. Watch the arc of history instead of despairing whenever there is backsliding or push back.

pingveno,

I think it's a mistake to view the modern FBI as a coherent will. Under the abuses of Hoover, sure, but today's FBI was more than willing to investigate the Trump campaign (silently, as it should be) while the NY field office openly interfered with Hillary Clinton's campaign.

pingveno,

Yes, he is pushing the envelope now. And in the past. And in the future. Asking Donald Trump to not be a trash fire is like asking gravity to suddenly reverse. It ain't happening.

pingveno,

There's the quote I was looking for!

Exclusive: John Kelly goes on the record to confirm several disturbing stories about Trump | CNN Politics (www.cnn.com)

In the statement, Kelly is confirming, on the record, a number of details in a 2020 story in The Atlantic by editor-in-chief Jeffrey Goldberg, including Trump turning to Kelly on Memorial Day 2017, as they stood among those killed in Afghanistan and Iraq in Section 60 at Arlington National Cemetery, and saying, “I don’t get...

pingveno,

There are plenty of veterans out there that don't advertise it because it's not a core piece of their identity. Of course the 'Murica veterans are going to be more frequently Trumpers. My uncle was in the Vietnam War, but he's only talked about it a handful of times when asked. He despises Trump, not because he's a vet, but because of who Trump is.

McCarthy’s last-ditch plan to keep the government open collapses, making a shutdown almost certain (apnews.com)

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s last-ditch plan to keep the federal government temporarily open collapsed in dramatic fashion Friday as a robust faction of hard-right holdouts rejected the package, making a shutdown almost certain....

pingveno,

There's a quote from P.J. O'Rourke that illustrates the point well:

The Democrats are the party that says government will make you smarter, taller, richer, and remove the crabgrass on your lawn. The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it.

A central tenant of the Democratic Party is that government can be a force for good and should be run well. Republicans try to tear the government down, especially at the federal level. The party as a whole doesn't care nearly as much about good governance principles, though there are of course exceptions.

pingveno,

If you want to get through state lines, be prepared to rub a lot of hog tummies to keep them happy.

pingveno,

I have a friend who is both anti-abortion and vegetarian. She's not the most logical person all the time, but she's really consistent on this one. I vigorously disagree with her anti-abortion stance, but I admire her consistency, if that makes sense.

pingveno,

Remember, it's only genocide if it's perpetrated by the West or capitalists.

pingveno,

Okay, but this actually happened and is well documented. The event is not under question.

pingveno,

Oh, Br’er Musk, I don’t care what you do with me, so long as you just don’t throw me in that briar patch over there.

Should I just quit urban and social life for a rural and lonely life?

I’m majoring in CS related-field, and I used to have tons of passion for it and underlying tech, and worked as full stack dev, but my mind was very different in a good way (better at logical/cognitive demanding tasks, creative, productive, etc). Things happened, and I just can’t stand living in society, experiencing all this...

pingveno,

I say this only because it's funny, not to mock you. Naturalist (-al-) is likely the word you're looking for. Naturist is basically another name for nudist. Unless maybe OP wants to be out in the sticks for another reason. :)

pingveno,

Philip Wallach of the American Enterprise Institute called the visioning effort an “authoritarian fantasy.”

When the center-right is like "slow down, too far crazy right", you know it's bad.

District attorney in Georgia election case against Trump and others seeks protections for jurors (apnews.com)

The Georgia prosecutor who has brought charges accusing former President Donald Trump and others of illegally trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election in the state is asking the judge in the case to take steps to protect jurors in the case.

pingveno,

What really kills me is how even people who don't particularly like him are backing him. My husband's uncle doesn't like the man, but in a discussion with me replied to the number of charges with "if that's not an abuse of power I don't know what is". It's like he hadn't even considered that Trump could well be guilty enough to warrant multiple indictments.

pingveno,

That's what I was think. Usually 90% of the books are, shall we say, there for a reason. But OP has seeded this library with some high quality material. Hopefully it stays that way!

pingveno,

check relevant state and local laws

Nice of them to include this. It varies so widely by state. If you're in San Francisco, you're going to be just fine. If you're out in the sticks in Texas, you might find yourself watching your back.

Does Anyone Have a TIFU Moment When Cooking?

I was finishing a jar of extremely hot peppers (7 pot primos) that I had fermenting on Thanksgiving day. I made a hot sauce with them and cantaloupe. I had them in a pan at a low simmer to meld the flavors. The problem was the steam coming off was potent as hell. It filled the house when everyone was arriving and coughing from...

pingveno,

Not me, but family lore. When my parents had just started dating in their 20's, my mother was housed in "The Beaver Hut" with a bunch of people including her twin sister (my aunt). It was spaghetti night and they were making a homemade sauce. My aunt was putting in salt. Instead of a teaspoon, she put more like a quarter of a cup or more. Everyone else was going to fish it out, but she was like "nah, it'll be fine" and stirred it in.

Needless to say, it was not fine. It was so salty that everyone except my father refused to eat it.

Note: It might have been something else like pizza. With spaghetti, it you screwed up a sauce that much it's easy enough to make a substitute sauce from kitchen staples and odds and ends.

Trump says he'll appeal DC trial date; legal experts say that's not possible (news.yahoo.com)

Donald Trump said on Monday he would appeal the scheduling of a March 2024 trial over his alleged efforts to subvert his 2020 election defeat, though legal experts said such a move was not possible before a verdict is reached in the case....

pingveno,

Oh, sure he did. Hand picked experts like John Eastman and Rudy Guiliani who tell him what he wants to hear. They are also known as "co-conspirators".

pingveno,

Gandhi was convicted for the oh-so-horrible statement:

How come all thieves have the name Modi?

This is a clear attempt to sweep aside a political rival by the ruling party. Hopefully this will be more than a temporary reprieve.

pingveno,

I mean... technically no one is missing. Just maybe in a different form.
