Quite possibly a luddite.

Yeah, happens to me all the time as well. People specifically ask me not to commit acts of genocide in a specific population, and I just accidentally bomb them anyway a few hours later.

It's truly tragic, but there's really nothing I can do about it, and I honestly wish people would stop bitching about it.

I'm not sure I see the benefit of this. The point that Wikipedia might eventually become corrupted is made moot by the permissive licensing of the information there. The main challenge of the Wiki format is with fact checking and ensuring quality, which is only made more complicated by having a federated platform.

ActivityPub is great for creating the social web. The added benefit of ActivityPub for non-social services is not obvious to me at all.

That said, it's a cool proof of concept, and I'm sure it can be useful for certain types of federated content management - I just don't see how it could ever make sense as a Wikipedia alternative.

It's convenient that the gavel is used both for auctions and for courtrooms. Both situations apparently boil down to giving it to the highest bidder.

Biden is fine. It's your fascist problem we're worried about.

I used to dislike Taylor Swift along with all other contemporary pop stars. Maybe even a little bit more, because she had the audacity to call herself Country: Spitting in the face of personal heroes like Kristofferson, Nelson, and Cash.

Then I stopped being an edgy teenager, Swift released Shake it Off, and I had to recognize it was a fun song to dance to. In an ironic kind of way of course, but nevertheless.

And then, in 2015, Ryan Adams released his cover album of Swift's 1989, playing every single song on the album in a folksy way. I dug it. And with it, I had to appreciate that Taylor Swift is one hell of a songwriter: I loved the songs, I just don't love the sound of pop music all that much. That's personal taste, not everything I dislike is bad.

Then Ryan Adams fell from grace with metoo, so fuck him. At least it triggered Father John Misty to publish (and later remove) his legendary covers of Swift in the style of the Velvet Underground.

Fast forward to 2020, and Taylor Swift dabbles with music I can actually enjoy listening to with her album folklore. Pretty cool. I actually got my expectations up for her next album, evermore, low-key hoping that it would be musically inspired by the Battle of Evermore. Sadly I was wrong, but again, it's a matter of personal preferences.

What matters more is the fact that she's reinventing herself from album to album - she's successful in one formula, and she just ditches it and moves on to something different. And every time she does it, she seems to be even more successful than the last time. Her growth as an artist is astonishing.

Finally, she's just cool. Fuck the labels - she'll just casually re-records her entire discography in order to take back control of her songs. She's caught up in all kinds of stupid celebrity drama, but it tends to be the rest of the industry falling over like toddlers trying to drag her into shit for PR while she acts like the only adult in the room. She also scores points for casually hanging out with Billy Bragg and encouraging people to vote and shit.

A personal recommendation is to use Droidify, it's just a great F-droid front-end.

You can download the APK here: https://f-droid.org/packages/com.looker.droidify/

Or, even better, the beginning of Isreal's transformation into a country where people see through the bullshit of the far-right and elect decent leaders, leaving Netanyahu to rot in prison.

The crowd voting for him thinks the fascism is agreeable, the rapes are peak alpha behaviour, the Epstein relations are edgy and fun, the wanting to fuck his daughter is relatable, and the treason a product of necessity and honestly peak patriotism.

Body odour? Harder to do mental gymnastics with that one.

9 days after writing in defence of a Free Palestine, Paul Biggar is dropped from his director role at CircleCI (hachyderm.io)

His original post , titled I can’t sleep, is some brilliant writing. When we talk about the chilling effect that criticism of Israel creates in industries everywhere (including ours) this is what that looks like.

Nothing short of heroic - too many people in a similar situation find themselves saying that it's awful what's happening, but there's nothing they can do about it.

Well, it turns out there is. Inspiring as hell.

Does someone know if anyone maintains a list of companies or organizations where this kind of bullshit has gone down, with link to sources? Could be useful to keep track.

I can't believe how quickly we went from pretending we thought murdering civilians was a bad thing to concluding it's merely a matter of killing the right civilians.

Charlie Sheen “Assaulted In His LA Home By Neighbour Who Forced Her Way In” (deadline.com)

Charlie Sheen was assaulted in his Los Angeles home by a neighbour, police have announced. The woman charged was named as Electra Schrock. She was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, force likely to create great bodily injury and residential burglary.

I like Kant's take on this. He argued (roughly, by memory) that giving to people begging on the street directly was a selfish act, as it's satisfying our own need to feel better about ourselves more than the needs of the homeless population, and would lead to an unfair distribution giving more money to those who are talented at evoking empathy rather than those that might need it the most. He argued that the unselfish thing to do would be to donate to the cause indirectly, responding not to the emotional response in the moment but to a rational consideration of the needs of the homeless population.

I think he has a point. That said, there's nothing wrong with being selfish every now and then, especially not if your selfishness gives someone a warm meal. And empathy is a healthy human reaction.

Your parents seem to have failed to grasp the challenges facing the homeless population. A better take would be "don't give that guy money, start donating regularly to a local charity instead and help make sure that help is given to all those who need it".

Oh, and also, rally for political change.

Norway says Israel response to Hamas attack disproportionate (www.timesofisrael.com)

Norway’s prime minister says the Israeli army’s response to the deadly Hamas attack that killed 1,400 people and saw over 230 abducted by terrorists has been disproportionate, and denounces a “catastrophic” humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Unfortunately I'm not so sure they're missing the point. I'm afraid there's quite a few people who are just excited to see their scheduled genocide put into motion.

sab,

It's possible to blame both. There's nothing in the comment you're responding to saying Israel is not a terror state or that they're not to blame for things going to shit.

You can absolutely blame Hamas for their actions. And you can blame Israel for Hamas. Responding to completely fair criticism of Hamas by whining that Israel is worse is just whataboutism. They are both terror organizations at this point.

Sure, people told me that my neighbours might have to leave the country and that the staff crisis of the NHS would get several times worse than it already was. But nobody told me my holidays would be affected!

This is the exact kind of selfish stupidity is what caused the mess in the first place.

I love this mugshot because for the first time in a long long time, America is united. Everyone loves it.

The Republicans think he looks like a bad mother fucker, a political martyr, simultaneously Jesse James and Robin Ford, a Churchill that will fight till the bitter end and a Spartacus up against the corrupt elites.

The rest of us think he looks like a pathetic moron on his way to prison.

Either way America stands, for once, united.

I think the point isn't to say Valve's help isn't appreciated, but to give a little reminder to share some gratefulness with the amazing people developing Wine before Valve got involved as well. It was and is an impressive piece of software in its own right. :)

That doesn't mean Valve wasn't a complete game changer. The fact that they managed to make a handheld Linux gaming device popular among gamers rather than just open source fanatics is impressive as hell, and we're all better off.

In a statement posted on social media, Bernstein’s children Jamie, Alexander, and Nina defended Cooper, saying: “It breaks our hearts to see any misrepresentations or misunderstandings of [Cooper’s] efforts … Bradley chose to use makeup to amplify his resemblance, and we’re perfectly fine with that. We’re also certain that our dad would have been fine with it as well.”

There's plenty of anti-Semitism out there to feel outraged about. I see how it's more fun to get upset about stupid inconsequential shit, but let's not kid ourselves into believing that an actor wearing prosthetics to closer resemble the person he's portraying is even making it to the list of concerns facing Jewish communities.

In other news, that actor seems to have a very tiny nose.

I guess it only occasionally makes sense for government web sites and banks. X might have ambitions to become a bank, so in that sense it might make sense.

So another piece of advice: if twitter ever asks you if you want to start using it for banking, nope the fuck out.

I took it for a spin.

  1. x.com
  2. Do you want to sign in with Google? -> press X
  3. Sign in on Twitter -> press X
  4. 404 page not found -> press X on tab

It's anything but inconsistent.

It seems to be Mali just wanting their domains back, in which case it's uncertain times for all .ml domains.

Good thing join-lemmy is safely tucked away in a .org domain.

This is extremely bad timing for Lemmy (if it ends up happening), but also a good example of how federation makes the entire social media landscape more robust. Had this happened to a centralized service it would be devastating.

Enough with the Mark Zuckerberg Love (jogblog.substack.com)

The article criticizes recent media coverage portraying Mark Zuckerberg as “cool” again based on his success with Threads and a shirtless photo he posted. The author argues that Zuckerberg’s photo looks like that of a middle-aged man cheating on his wife, and that Threads’ success is questionable given it is mostly used...

"Look at this guy having a hobby, he's probably in a mid life crisis and cheating on his wife haha"

There are so many valid criticisms of this guy, and equally many things you could say that's not really a valid criticism but still kind of a good point. This is just bullshit and if anything distracting from all the things we should be criticizing him for.

A mascot is not necessarily an alternative to an icon - they can coexist. A few people just like having a mascot for software projects, similar to the lemming of Lemmy or the Reddit alien. :)
