Wow, logging onto kbin.social the past couple days and watching it become more and more reddit-y has sucked. People demanding new features, defending CP, the fuck is up?

I knew using the Fediverse would require lots of personal curation, but I thought we were better than this. Could definitely see beehaw.org defederating from kbin.social soon :/

Trans people with accepting parents: How did your relationship change?

Hello there. Angry parents stories are sadly more common, but I remember reading back on Reddit a heartwarming story about a dad who accepted fully his daughter. So while we all know how "bad" relationships usually go, I'm curious to hear about people who had love and support in their journeys.

Yeah, my parents are pretty great. The funny thing is I think they expected me to change a lot but I'm really the same. Plus it got my mom really involved in local LGBT things which is swag.

When you click that logo, and it brings up that menu, there is a little "house" icon that brings you home :)

The thing is, this is a third party app. The platform we're on is the Fediverse, it's just third party apps. No, they don't provide the same thread-like experience that you get on kbin, but for now, there's not much a difference in simply browsing kbin instances from Mastodon apps or the similar. This isn't currently great for kbin.social with all the troubles federating, but explore your options!

Good night, kbin.social 🌃 🌙

Quick question: Kbin magazines are generally the same thing as groups like Guppe or Chirp? Are there any large differences here?

lunar2m7,

Just did 😁 Thanks!

lunar2m7,

Hmm, strange. It works on desktop, just not mobile. Hope that gets fixed soon.

lunar2m7,
lunar2m7 avatar

Yes, you would, although each post may have unique discussion. I think it's about finding a balance between having quality discussion while not clogging up your feed.

You'd search their address in the search function, so if you wanted to follow the fedia worldnews magazine, you'd search "<at>worldnews<at>fedia.io" replacing <at> with @ and it'd pop up. BUT, kbin.social is currently not federating with other instances, so this doesn't really work right now, though it will soon once things are more stable. I suggest playing around with this on another instance or app like mastodon!

I'm working on a post right now that should cover the basics, should be finished soon. Afterwards, we can start filling in the gaps :)

lunar2m7,
lunar2m7 avatar

Yes, but that's where tools like https://fedi.directory/ come in, as well as threads like the one Lazycog posted.

lunar2m7,
lunar2m7 avatar

I assume you're on mobile? When you click the logo, a menu should open, and there's a button in the menu with a home icon.

How are you getting to your subscribed feed? It should bring you to https://kbin.social/sub.

OC Some ramblings about the future

Tbh, this has been on my mind for the past two days, so I hope you guys don't mind if I unload it here. I tend to obsess and I figure if no one cares, then at least I can get it out of my head instead of thinking about it all the time. Also sorry for the length, I promise I have a doctor's note....

lunar2m7,
lunar2m7 avatar

Seriously. What I love about here, the only thing people have to gain from participating is... participating. No points, reputation, just genuine, human contact. Things already feel more human, now that people are sharing real thoughts and ideas, not locked behind the filter of "what will get me the most karma."

lunar2m7,
lunar2m7 avatar

I did not see that lmao, well...

Quick update:

  • fedia.io adds 2000 users today for a total of >16,000 users: https://fedia.io/stats
  • kbin.social is now at around 123,000 users: https://kbin.social/stats
  • fedia.io struggling under the new load, but has stayed up thanks to incredible work by @jerry (send them some love!)
  • kbin.social is slow and still not federating, but it is holding together

Just a reminder to be patient. This is beta code and no one expected such an onslaught. Truly amazing times!

@mastodonmigration Looks like now we're finally getting some federating here and there 🥳

So, what's going on with all this stuff?

Short version. Reddit is a mess. Users are fleeing to the .

There are two Fedi alternatives you can join, Lemmy and kbin.

kbin: https://fedia.io/register (also https://kbin.social/register but now slammed)
Lemmy: https://infosec.pub/signup

New migrants please be patient. This is a lot like Nov 2022. It will be choppy, but get sorted out. This is another golden opportunity to break down corporate social media.

@Otome@kbin.social From what I understand, not everything from Mastodon/The Fediverse is pulled, that would be impossible, only profiles / tags / groups that are 'called up' by users in the instance.

I believe one cannot separate politics from code, as the very philosophy of FOSS is political, and based on that opinion I don't really believe beehaw can separate itself morally from the Lemmy devs. Secondly, as long as Lemmy software is used, it supports the developers, in the same way as we're supporting Ernest through donations. In my mind, in order to truthfully be independent, Beehaw should fork the software and make it theirs, which they discuss in this post. These are just my thoughts.

I'm so happy you're here! And yeah, the subreddit has some great conversation. Reading it straight through is what I did, too. I'm not sure if you'd already heard, but I recommend reading through the old forums when you're finished, which is almost like supplementary material, with all the speculation.
