Ernest is a Chad for sure. We've exploded in number almost overnight and he's been working his ass off to keep everything not only up and running but improving.

Rarely in his life has he been called out on his blatant contradictions. It seems he's forgotten that they matter.

Massachusettsian

Any proper Bay Stater knows the correct term is "Massholes"

Although, let's, uh, maybe start ourselves out of the gate with something a little more welcoming. Kbinner seems appropriate enough, as stated elsewhere in this thread.

OC I ask everyone here to modmail large subreddits about kbin

I ask that people modmail subreddits that have privated in protest (you can see which ones here: https://reddark.untone.uk/) and ask they put a message about kbin migration into their about section so users trying to see those subs will come here and start communities. It will help grow kbin as well as contribute to the protest....

Problem here is that because of the nature of federated software, we're going to need to disperse new members onto a lot of different servers. If everyone all comes to Kbin, Kbin is going to eat shit in very short order. It's already struggling under the current increased load, and Ernest does not have (and should not be expected to have) the resources to spin up an enterprise grade server stack to host us on. The recommended server to send new users to will change by the day if not by the hour, and there's no way to get around that once the signal has been sent. Mods might cooperate with one mass message, most of them aren't going to keep updating it over and over at our request.

I love kbin, I came here recently and hope for a long and fruitful future for us with many new users. But exploding our user count from 12k to 180k to 800k in a week is not going to do us any favors with that. Kbin does not have infinite resources and growing severely beyond its capacity could be a death sentence, at least in these early stages.

I think the current trend of just spreading info about the Fediverse and leading people to join-lemmy.org and letting them figure it out for themselves is probably best. There is a sharp learning curve there, but people can figure it out. All of us figured it out, to some extent. It could use some love and explanation, I think, and will require both of those things if Fediverse expects to capture the public at large - but it's easy enough to figure out enough to get started with for anyone who isn't a total moron.

skulblaka,

Fair enough, that's an important distinction. We're basically exactly the same as Lemmy but just running a different software, correct?

I am still learning all the finer details of this after all, I sometimes sound like I know what I'm talking about but I am a new user here.

Regardless though, your average reddit refugee that hasn't already made the move will be looking for a website that they can click on, create an account, and start interacting. They aren't looking to host their own server.

As far as I've been able to gather, you're exactly correct. Fediverse is essentially a webring that propagates content across the entire ring to anyone who is listening. The different front ends are largely just forms of interaction with that same ring. Anyone who spins up an instance and federates into the ring will begin receiving and broadcasting the content within.

On some level everything on the internet runs on Java. And Adderall.

Why are you not seeing as many posts from Lemmy communities on Kbin?

Hello! You may have noticed that the majority of posts and threads in your feed on Kbin are from within the platform itself. This is because the admin has activated Cloudflare DDoS protection which basically slows down requests to kbin, to prevent the website from experiencing downtime or becoming slow to respond....

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

It's likely possible but impractical. It's a waste of storage space and fetch requests when the posts are easily available at the home source. Remember that many of these instances are being run on people's own servers and VMs, and hardware comes at a premium. Kbin is no different, ernest is hosting this whole platform on his own VM subscription and he's going to have to keep up with costs.

You'll get new posts, because that's the point of subscribing, but if you want to browse old posts you may as well go to their home.

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

Well that's just a dick move in general

skulblaka,

I've read that no one wants to host it because of legal issues.... I predict that at least one person will be willing to deal with said legal issues and stand up a reputable NSFW magazine, and that we may end up having some trouble with a bunch of others.

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

Shit that's a good question. I imagine moderator tools can enforce deletion across federated instances? It would make sense for that to be an ability for them to have, just push an update that overwrites a given post on all listening instances.

For instances that received the post and then stopped following before the purge signal is sent though... That I don't know about.

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

I think the point being made is that Lemmygrad and ml are being run by... undesirables, who will very likely drive away their own audience. We probably don't want to federate with them and people leaving their servers to look for new federation will appreciate ones not affiliated with them.

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

Agreed. Kbin has been absolutely refreshing. Here's hoping we can maintain our attitude with an influx of new users.

skulblaka,
skulblaka avatar

You know, that's a good point and I apologize. You and @nightauthor have both brought that up so I feel it's now appropriate to respond. I mean that in the sense that I, and hopefully most of us here, do not desire those sorts of people interacting with us in our social space. I'll call them what they are - authoritarians, far-right trolls, and bad faith actors - and I do not wish to read their hateful content or have them interact with my content. I come here to learn and have fun.

Didn't mean any offense except to those who deserve to be offended by that, and I'll now shut my mouth on the matter.

The Pathfinder video games (Kingmaker and Wrath Of The Righteous) are based very closely on tabletop sourcebooks. They're an excellent way to experience Pathfinder without having to put together a group and meet once a week. Highly recommend. If you enjoy the video games you'll probably enjoy the tabletop and vice versa, if you hate WOTR you'll probably not like the tabletop version either.

(Also, hi Cyn, I think I've replied on like 4 of your comments in a row, I promise I'm not stalking your profile lmao you're just making good conversation)

I want to understand why the advertising folks are so hell bent on making safe spaces for fascists. There can't be that many of them that they are the only profitable advertising denomination. I mean, sure, they may be rubes that can be duped into buying nearly anything, but...

...Well...

...I guess I might have answered my own question.

It's my coping mechanism and I need it now!

I had heard of Mastodon being a Twitter alternative but since I never use Twitter I never looked into it. Now with reddit imploding this is my first real foray into the Fediverse. Started at Lemmy, made an account with kbin, and once I figure out how to link them together or access kbin via my Lemmy account on Jerboa I expect I'll probably delete one of the two accounts.

But it's a process, that I haven't quite figured out yet. I think Fediverse as a whole, while being a relatively simple concept, in practice is complex enough to confuse a lot of otherwise fairly tech savvy people. I'm not a hobbyist but I've got history with programming and networking, so I'm no stranger to niche tech, but I'm finding myself occasionally confused by things here.

Fediverse is great tech that I think is being held back a bit by its presentation. But I'm here now and I expect I'll probably be here a while, so here's hoping we can build the sort of community we're looking for here.

The natural response for most new users will be to join already large servers, which is exactly what we don't want here. I learned that only recently (am a new user myself). Perhaps we should consider a line on the join-lemmy server list that says as much. Otherwise people will probably keep flooding the flagships and our rate of user growth will be severely hampered.

At least if we put a warning on the server list we're at least filtering out users that don't read.

/kbin - Just Reddit Things update

Hey, once again, I welcome the newcomers. It's great to see new faces here :) It seems that we've managed to resolve the server issue. Unfortunately, I had to temporarily disable certain features, such as content auto-refresh. It will be restored at the beginning of next week after the infrastructure change, so you'll get to...

I don't believe that there is a mobile app for kbin nor do I think you should expect one anytime soon unless you make it yourself. Kbin is still extremely early in active development.

However, if you run Chrome or Firefox on your phone, they both have an option to "install" a page as a webapp, which works remarkably well. It's what I've been using and frankly I don't have much in the way of complaints that might be fixed by a dedicated app. It feels like it is one.
