So, how are the ISPs going to tell us how we should deal with data flow if they can't secure its own shit.

Mystery malware destroys 600,000 routers from a single ISP during 72-hour span:

An unknown threat actor with equally unknown motives forces ISP to replace routers.
One day last October, subscribers to an ISP known as Windstream began flooding message boards with reports their routers had suddenly stopped working and remained unresponsive to reboots and all other attempts to revive them.

Whenever I have an internet problem I always dread contracting my ISP because I have to explain what I’ve done to the repair tech and I can tell I’m annoying them.

Like my fiber box is getting no signal, so I reach out and they’re like “we’re going to reset your router”. Except they can’t, because I don’t use their router I use my own router and trick their system into accepting it because I’ve tagged the port with the cable from the fiber box with the right VLAN. So then after I explain that part they’re like “ok well can you hook up our router for testing?”

I can but I also have an old fluke fiber tester that I’ve already tested the line with so like…..I know it’s not that. But then I have to explain “well I actually already tested the actual fiber and there is no signal so the problem isn’t with the router. Here’s the output of the test.”

I feel like it must be like an ISP techs worst nightmare to get a fluke test output in a service ticket.

🆕 blog! “Universal Basic Website”

Many years ago - when I was very young and you were even younger - it was standard for an ISP to provide all their users with a small amount of webspace. Both Pipex and Demon offered webspace back in 1996. If my hazy memory is correct, they offered a few megabytes - more than […]

And as expected, the inevitable lawsuit from ISPs and mobile carriers has come. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2024/06/cable-and-telecom-lobbies-sue-fcc-in-hopes-of-killing-net-neutrality-rules/

"Lobby groups representing cable, telecom, and mobile Internet service providers sued the in several US appeals courts last week. Industry groups also filed a petition with the FCC on Friday asking for a stay of the rules, claiming the regulations shouldn't take effect while litigation is pending because the industry is likely to prevail in court."

joeo10,
@joeo10@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

"If the industry loses at the appeals-court level again, lobby groups would seek review at the Supreme Court. Their hopes depend partly on Justice Brett Kavanaugh, who argued in a 2017 dissent as a circuit court judge that the "net neutrality rule is unlawful and must be vacated" because "Congress did not clearly authorize the FCC to issue the net neutrality rule."

So as I have predicted, the US Supreme Court is going to have to get involved to settle the Net Neutrality debate one way or another.

Either it holds up or they can kill consumer protections for a generation. We may not have to wait long to find out...

So I have a bunch of services running at home. Now, my home is your typical large Canadian telco (aka assholes) and they are actively sabotaging my host-at home stuff. (i.e. I set it up, it works a few days, then it stops being reachable from outside, at work, rebooting doesn't fix etc.)

Can any recommend a reliable "just works" remoting solution (where the host is linux) where I can always remote in if the host has power and an outbound connection?? (paid is ok)

A piece of metal that tore through a Florida home last month was space junk from the International Space Station, according to NASA. The 1.6-pound object was debris from a cargo pallet that had been intentionally released from the space station three years ago, NBC News reports:

My has been cranking up the speed recently. Over the past few weeks, my decrepit old couldn’t handle it any longer and kept dropping the connection and then resetting. It was very frustrating. Happily, they’ve sent a new one and things are back up and the connection is looking solid again, with the added bonus that the speed is nearly three times as much I had been getting previously.

Virgin Media preparing to offer symmetrical upload speeds?
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2024/03/virgin-media-preparing-to-offer-symmetrical-upload-speeds/

Virgin Media - a UK-based fibre-optic ISP - recently sent me a survey about their potential product offerings. It was desperate to know if I wanted bundled streaming video (no), or Sky Sports (LOL no), or any other digital subscriptions (no, go away), or a landline (what, is this the 1990s?). They even wanted to know if I'd pay extra for priority support.

Priority support add on for £3.

In amongst all the other offers, they asked whether I would be interested in paying more for symmetric Internet speeds!

List of proposed upgrades including Symmetrical data add on for £4.

Here are some of the offerings they proposed. I must not that these are from a market research exercise. Whether they'll ever launch, and whether the prices are accurate, is something we'll have to wait to see.

List of different broadband packages each with symmetrical speed add ons.

As I've mentioned before, I like my 500Mbps down - but the 50Mbps upload is a bit of a drag. So I eagerly answered "yes" to anything that looked like faster upload bandwidth.

I've no idea if this will actually materialise. And I can only hope those prices are realistic.

If you're interested in joining Virgin Media, you can get £50 if you join with my link.

With the switch to a 1GBps internet line. Also meant I needed to change the infrastructure inside the place from 100base/t to 1000base/t. Now that all the devices on the internal network can access both 1GBps on WiFi as well as while RJ-45.
