If you've followed my work for a long time, you've watched me transition from a "" who posts 5-15 short hits every day to an "essay-" who posts 5-7 long articles/week. I'm loving the new mode of working, but returning to linkblogging is also intensely, unexpectedly gratifying:

If you'd like an essay-formatted version to read/share, here's a link to pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:

My last foray into was so great - and my backlog of links is already so large - that I'm doing another one.

Link the first: "Siphon," @xkcd's delightful, whimsical "-how-the-fuck-does-it-work" one-shot (visit the link, the tooltip is great):

You Have the Power to Create Your Own Reality and Shape the Course of Your Life by Choosing Who You Want to Be. #YouHaveThePower #CreateYourOwnReality #ShapeYourLife

InfamousLeopard383,

@mikecarter Well, no. Given it is true that we can shape existence (a debatable point that physiscts and philophers haven’t settled),this ignores that individuals with different abilities are using their power to also shape your life and how you attempt to shape your life. It also ignores the well-established evidence that external factors (wars, disease, etc) also affect brain structure and chemistry, thus also affecting who you are and want to be.

A really worth while read for anyone who teaches physics (or is just generally interested).

IMO understanding how people find/found things out (i.e. the first experiment(s) to support our understanding) provides great insight into how physics (and science in general) works.

The 16th and 17th centuries constituted a period of drastic change in the way humanity conceptualized and sought to understand the world. Scholars made massive leaps in fields such as mathematics, astronomy, chemistry, and, perhaps most notably, physics.
