DavidBHimself, to Japan

I hate being the one saying this, but people going to Japan and expecting to see Ninja are a bit naive.

They're ninja. If you could see them, they'd be bad at their job and be fired (and they wouldn't be ninja anymore.)

Japan's family law finally entering the 20th Century (not a typo)

J'apprends la Francais par lire Reddit, et... "gant de toilette" ? Qu'est ce qui passe dans les douches francaises?

DavidBHimself,

@ZachWeinersmith LOL.
In France, we don't usually have washcloths but "wash gloves."
Not actually a glove, but two washcloths sewn together on three sides if you want.

Apparently, it's called "washing mitt" in English (TIL too)

One part of the university encampment shutdowns that is upsetting to me is that the vast majority of Americans -- about 2/3 -- disapprove of Israel's actions in Gaza.

DavidBHimself,

@evan I'm not sure the 2/3 is spread equally among all professions like this.

Has reached too?

It's underlining more and more of what I write, in more and more colors, but suggestions for fixing sentences or words are now pretty much all under a paywall. WTF?

@japonmeneatout J'imagine qu'il n'est pas traduit.

DavidBHimself,

I think the Cybertruck is becoming my favorite car ever.

See, I never cared for cars. No car has ever elicited any feelings from me. They're a necessary evil and nothing else. Do they get me where I need to go? Fine. They don't? No interest.

But this car? The Cybertrunk? Most hilarious car ever. By far. Love it. A good laugh every day when I open social media.

DavidBHimself, to TaylorSwift

I listened to a Taylor Swift song and I liked it (one of the newest one, it was in my Youtube recommendations and I clicked.)
Does it mean I need to listen to the other ones?

Full disclosure: it was actually the second time I heard a Taylor Swift song. The first time was on the Hollywood Dreams ride at Universal Studios Japan. One of her songs was playing in my seat's speakers, but I was too busy freaking out to really pay attention.

Quite often on the Fediverse – more often on other social networks – I find people talking about how things were so much better years ago.

And I’m telling you this is a trap. Don’t fall for it. Yesteryear is not better than now, it just feels that way because it’s over.

Progress exists. It’s important that we all acknowledge how things are better. More importantly, you are alive – enjoy this moment.

DavidBHimself,

@atomicpoet I I want to agree with you but I think compared to all the "things were better before" that came before we do actually live at a turning point in history and not a good one. Western democracies are very probably ending. The Western world as we know it is very probably ending. The climate collapse is a few decades if not a few years away. Environmental collapse and the Sixth Extinction are already on the way.
I don't know if the present is better or worse than the past, but the future will only get worse, and it won't get better until well after we're dead.
So it's understandable to see the past with fondness when the future is beyond terrifying.

Somebody over at BlueSky just said this:

"When people think of English food, they only think of white English food, not other myriad foods that have come from other cultures."

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. I know it's an English practice to steal foreign cultural artifacts and claim them as their own but come on...

"Dear Concerned Persons,"

You gotta love Outlook's automatic translator...

DavidBHimself,

A common piece of advice for clear writing is "Avoid double negatives".

But "avoid" and "negative" are both negatives! Why isn't it always phrased as "Negate things at most once"?

DavidBHimself,

@simontatham I hate to be that guy because you're probably making a joke, but I have no sense of humor.

The negatives in question here are a grammatical issue, not lexical one.

"avoid" is a positive verb. "donit do" is a negative. Same meaning but different grammatical construction.

If you were joking, just ignore me.

DavidBHimself,

@simontatham Well, yes and no.

"Didn't fail to misunderstand" while not ideal, is a stylistic choice. It can be used in litotes for example. Although, that example is a bit extreme, I admit. "Didn't fail to understand" on the other hand is much more palatable and even has a certain flavor.

"Didn't not not understand" on the other hand, is a grammatical mistake, so is "Didn't not understand".
