I hope we’ve reached peak Taylor Swift.

Because I have to be honest with all of you. There’s other people worth hearing.

DavidBHimself,

@atomicpoet I have yet to hear one of her songs in full.

(I have the privilege to leave in a place where she's only mildly known.)

Swift fans, I have nothing against her, neither as a singer, nor as a person. It's the Western media's obsession with her that I find annoying, especially because she's such a non-entity in my daily life.

Will I clean up my office? 🤔

Seriously, how many spin offs do we need?
Me: YES

DavidBHimself,

@liztai I wish there was a good one, though.

I admit, the Rick and Michonne one is okay so far, but the fact that this CRM nonsense is a big part of the story makes me think it's going to crash sooner than leter.

DavidBHimself,

@liztai It's out. It's Daryl's solo series.

I haven't officially given up on it, but I was so bored that I stopped after four episodes.
And of course, as it's an American show dealing with my country, I'm not sure if some of the things are bad writing or have an in-universe explanation (like Daryl arriving in France in Marseille from the US, then walking more than 500 km without encountering a human soul and very few walkers) Things like that.

DavidBHimself, to mastodon

I'm so fucking tired of the holier-than-you posers here.

You know which ones I'm talking about. The "Don't use Google!" The "Don't use Chrome!" The "Don't Federate with Threads." The "the Fediverse should be Opt-In." and more

Shut up! Just shut up!

You're killing the place. You're the reason why nobody new wants to join and many people are leaving.

Sometimes I'm afraid that it is even your goal. You want us to leave so the Fediverse can be back to being a circlejerk of a few thousand people who think they're social justice warriors because they're sharing the same outrage at everything over and over again and calling out people who don't think exactly like you.

How bad are some Americans at even imagining that not everyone online is another American?
I was just told to go try living in Asia instead of virtue signaling at home in the US.

DavidBHimself, to fediverse

This is just wrong.

What can we (as in most Fediverse users) do against those Taliban (no other words to describe them.)
They're killing the place.

Our reputation in the "outside world" is becoming worse and worse. And it is because of events like this. And it seems that they're becoming more and more common.

On being Chinese but not quite Chinese enough. Ie, what it's like being a "banana".

This is usually for my blog subscribers, but I've made it available for peeps for a few days. ;)

http://elizabethtai.com/2024/02/24/hello-from-a-banana/

DavidBHimself,

@liztai I don't know that much about the Chinese diaspora (except that it exists and roughly where it's located) but I find it interesting how the feeling of being Chinese is still so strong.

I guess I can't help comparing with Europe where usually you're "from" where you were born after two generations or so.

I have a Spanish or Catalan last name (I'm not even sure), a Flemish grandma and I'm also partly German (from the 19th Century), but I don't feel that any of those are part of my culture or identity. I'm a SouthWestern French because this is where I grew up, basically, and despite only one of my four grandparents being from there.

And that's pretty much the same for all Europeans I know (after two or three generations, your "roots" become irrelevant)

That's why I always facepalm when White Americans tell me that they're French or Italian or whatever because they know of one ancestor that's from there ("No, sorry, you're American.")

But it is different with the Chinese diaspora because, as you mentioned, you all still have a lot of customs and cultural practices coming from China.

When I lived in Paris, I knew one guy who was French from Vietnam but from the Chinese diaspora if that makes sense. When you asked him about his cultural identity, he just shrugged.

My parents' neighbor (basically my third grandma, I was closer to her than to one real grandma) was from Vietnam too, and she had one Chinese grandparent. When you asked her about her identity, she said French citizen of Vietnamese culture. She never felt Chinese.

BeAware, to bluesky

The more I look at the BlueSky documentation and try to make sense of their proprietary jargon, the more my head hurts.

It just doesn't make any sense to me how this is different from ActivityPub and how BlueSky doesn't control what federates.

I keep seeing people say it's decentralized, but if they can control who federates with bsky.app then is it really decentralized since that's where the vast majority would be anyways?

What the hell am I missing? Yeah, you have more control as a user, but that doesn't tell me a damn thing or connect their PDS, DID, NSID jargon to anything that makes sense to me. Maybe I'm just too dumb to understand this and that's fine.

Fediverse is where I want to be anyway. I just thought it might be interesting to try it out but if I don't understand it, then it's not really worth it.

DavidBHimself,

@mattl @BeAware I'll see it as part of the Fediverse when it'll federate with things that are not called BlueSky and that themselves federate with other things. But I'm picky.
(I love your logo by the way)

Funny how these days spam on the Fediverse is the talk of the town and I haven't seen a single one (probably thanks to my wonderful admin, thanks @reiver .)

Meanwhile, I haven't got so much spam in my email account in a long while. 🤔

@BeAware I never use the Federated Timeline, so it may be why. ;-)

I've just been accused of missing the "nuance" of what's happening in Gaza.

Can anyone explain to me the nuance of killing tens of thousands of people, most of them children?

DavidBHimself, to bluesky

I know what we see on our feed is not representative of what's happening on the whole network, but right now it's interesting and sad, because:

  • What I see on Threads is mostly people posting about their interests, pictures, debating stuff but no violent attack or anything (some snark, some strong disagreement, but no nastiness).

  • What I see on BlueSky is mostly people posting about their interests, pictures, shitposts, general fun with absolutely no aggression whatsoever.

  • What I see way too much on Mastodon and the Fediverse these days, is people screaming that everyone is out to get them, that we need to build walls everywhere, that Threads is evil and is going to kill us all, that BlueSky is evil for reasons they're unable to explain and these people will attack more or less violently whoever tells them to chill.

Is this what we have become? Really?

Marvel has finally confirmed casting for the "Fantastic Four" movie, releasing a teaser poster that showed Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/Human Torch) and Ebon Moss Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing). The director will be Matt Shakman, who also directed "WandaVision" and has worked on shows like "Fargo" and "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." For the A.V. Club, lapsed Marvel fan Matt Schimkowitz writes about his hope that this new iteration will course correct the tired MCU. "Is looking at this poster the most fun I’ve had with the MCU since that "Shang-Chi" bus sequence? Yes. Yes, it is," he writes. What's your opinion of the casting?

https://flip.it/JqTsAw

DavidBHimself,

@CultureDesk Pretty excited about it, even more so because it'll be directed by Matt Shakman.

DavidBHimself, to Japan

I never liked Valentine's Day in France, I've always found it too tacky and cheesy and full of manufactured romanticism, which is the worst kind of romanticism (the best kind is the literary genre from the early 19th Century, if you're wondering.)

I was always quite indifferent to Valentine's Day in the US (and of course the candies were subpar.)

Valentine's Day in Japan is... complicated... Because on the one hand, it's totally manufactured of course (imported from the West) but... the chocolates are actually delicious... but... It's the most sexist "holiday" I have ever experienced as it's solely women giving chocolate to men. (sure there's White Day, but whatever, I'll talk about it in due time)

However... Once again, "the kids are alright!" My daughter and her friends have decided that "fuck it, we'll all make chocolate candies, cookies, cakes, and such, and we're all going to give them to each other."

I love my children's generation. They're the best.
I hope it doesn't get perverted by the society they're growing up in as they're growing older.
Of course, I'm afraid for them, as the challenges they'll face are terrifying, and society is about to change big time.

DavidBHimself, to fediverse

That's it. They did it.

Those extremist idiots who hate and will attack everyone and anyone who doesn't think like them are giving us a bad name on BlueSky, Reddit, and beyond (wait a couple of days for the tech press to bash us once again)

You know who I'm talking about. The ones who want to dictate how the Fediverse should be managed even though they don't understand the first thing about federation (do they even know that Mastodon is not the same thing as the Fediverse?)

Spoiler alert: the whole Fediverse is based on opt-out. Privacy is almost non-existent here.

The ones who confuse Mark Zuckerberg with its users. The ones who hate BlueSky for no reason whatsoever, but they sure hate it.

The ones who want the Fediverse to be a closed space where only they decide who is allowed to communicate with whom.

I'm really really mad at them right now.

The damage they're doing to all of us is big, believe me.
The worst part? I'm sure they enjoy us, as their goal is to turn as many people away from the Fediverse as possible, most of us (the sane users) included.

DavidBHimself, to mastodon

A lot of Fediverse drama today, but in the middle of all of that, I still haven't found the perfect instance for my account to move to.

Yes, I know, the perfect one is my own, I'll get to it eventually, but I have no money or mental space for this right now. So, in the meantime, if you have advice, click the link and I'm all ears.

DavidBHimself, to internet

The most important lesson, I've ever learned about online privacy is this one:

If you want something to be private online, don't put it online in the first place.

snarfed.org, to random

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.

Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Feel free to DM me at @snarfed (different account than this one), email me, file a GitHub issue, or put #nobridge in your profile bio.

A number of us have thought about this for a while now, we’re committed to making it work well for everyone, and we’re very open to feedback. Thanks for listening. Feel free to share broadly.

DavidBHimself,

@snarfed.org@fed.brid.gy @snarfed Wow, the quantity of negative reactions and how quickly they appear is interesting.

Brigading also exists on the Fediverse, that's for sure. It's interesting and sad to see it coming from people who blame other platforms for such behaviors.

DavidBHimself,

@steelex2 @snarfed @activitypubblueskybridge @fedidevs @fediversenews @ErikUden I don't know you, we're not connected in any way I know, and yet, I can see your post, and your profile and more.
How is that for your privacy?

DavidBHimself,

@scott This was my feeling when the Threads freakout happened last summer and it has been confirmed since yesterday.

A lot of Mastodon users don't understand the first thing about the Fediverse and federation.

And it's concerning when some of those people are Mastodon admins.
