Yes, McDonald's is evil and all that... Whatever...

One thing I like about McDonald's in Japan (beyond the fact that at least it tastes good, not like ik the US where its barely edible) is all the limited series burger. They're not always the best ones, but at least they're original, both in their marketing and their recipes.

DavidBHimself, to random

The Western world seems totally unaware about what's happening in the Pacific Ocean. More and more island nations are forming an alliance with China (I'm not going to say that China is literally buying them out, but it probably is.) If you think this is anecdotal and who cares about such islands, you should start learning geography. China is doing this for a reason, not just for shit and giggles.
Hint: it's not about the islands themselves, it's about the water they control.

I blocked someone on the Fediverse. It's extremely rare that I do that.

An American told me to fuck off when I reminded them that they're not the only people on the web. They never like being reminded of this. That's why I'll never stop doing it.

I want to see a debate between conspiracy theorists who say that NASA has faked the Moon landings and those who say that NASA is hiding aliens and extremely advanced alien technology...

Although, I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same people.

DavidBHimself, to music

Good morning.

This morning's music: Nine Inch Nails "Your Touch."

If you're not familiar with them, listen to the whole Ghosts V and VI albums. They're available for free in many places.

Ghosts VI is a bit more experimental and maybe not for everyone, but Ghosts V is just some of the best "feel better" (if not "feel good") music these days.
They were released at the beginning of the pandemic, while most of America was in lockdown. And they both fit the theme.
Ghosts V symbolizing the time we get to spend together with our loved ones, away from the horrors of the world.
Ghosts VI being the anxiety we will feel alone at home while the horrors of the world are waiting for us outside.
(my interpretation)

Enjoy

Why does every cautionary dystopian sci-fi tale from the past 75 years somehow become a startup's business plan?

DavidBHimself,

@MostlyHarmless A lot of idiots still think that Sci-Fiction is here to help us imagine the future, and not here to warn us against possible futures that we should avoid.

These idiots have money.

On a side note (see previous post), concerning the Fediverse integration on my Wordpress site. Do you think it's better with just a snippet and a link to the site? Or should it be the whole content?

The way I see it right now:

Advantages of a snippet: You actually visit my site. 🙃
Disadvantages: It doesn't always "look good" and may not make you want to check what this is.

Advantages of the full content: You're more likely to read it, and even to follow my site from the Fediverse.
Disadvantages: It could be huge and messy when it's a long post with lots of text and/or pictures. You're not actually visiting my site.

What do you think? Both you lovely followers of mine and people with experience with the ActivityPub plugin for Wordpress?

Thanks in advance.

    DavidBHimself, to Disney

Yes, for people upset that Mickey Mouse is in the public domain and random people will do random and less than commendable things with the character, may I remind you that became what it is, not so much thanks to Mickey Mouse, but thanks to its use (we could almost say plundering) of the European tales and myths, all public domain of course. To the point that nowadays most non-Europeans (and probably some Europeans too) think that Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood, and many more are Disney characters.

Well, breaking news (centuries old breaking news) they're not. They never were.

The whole Disney Princess trope wouldn't even exist without the public domain.

And worse, Disney managed to have these characters copyrighted in many more ways than they should.

So having Mickey Mouse in the public domain is just paying it back and forward.

I hope to see many new both great and silly things with the non-Disney Mickey Mouse. I can't wait for the remake of SteamBoat Willy.

Hey folks, when did you fall in love with laser swords, scoundrels, bounty hunters and the Force? Are you an Original Trilogy kid (incl. the Ewok movies), did you find your way to the GFFA in the Dark Times with the Expanded Universe, was Jar Jar your hero, or did Rey and Mando capture your heart?

    DavidBHimself,

@jynersolives Glad to see the OT crowd being the majority.
I don't trust those Extended Universe people, though.

First encounter: the marketing in 1977-1978. They were everywhere, I especially remember a box of cookies with Luke and C-3PO on it. I was 4-5. I got my mom to buy me most of the toys (there weren't many then) and I did see part of the Holiday Special, but only part of it because my parents wanted to visit my grandma and were tired of waiting (I only really forgave them a few years ago when I stumbled on the whole thing on Youtube.)

In other words, I was already obsessed with it before even watching the movies, but I finally saw Empire in theaters in 1980 (I dragged my dad there, I think he fell asleep). One of the most amazing moments in my childhood if not my life.

    DavidBHimself,

@jynersolives I read the Marvel Comics too but quite late. I just read a handful of episodes of the "between Episode IV and Episode V" timeline, but I read all the post Empire ones (I can't remember when they were published in France, there was a few years delay from the US publication)

I think my love for Star Wars never died during the late 80s, early 90s in part thanks to the TTRPG. I played a lot with my friends.
I never cared much for the Extended Universe, for one good thing, you had dozens that were just crap that was produced only because some Star Wars fans would buy anything with "Star Wars" stamped on it (and it makes me facepalm every time I see people missing those.)

I "quit" Star Wars after Revenge of the Sith. Destroying Darth Vader and turning him into an angsty wimp this way was just unforgivable.

2005-2015 is really the only period of my life with no Star Wars in it.

Then, I got curious about Rebels, and instantly fell in love with it.

I still don't care about the Extended Universe and the obsession with the canon. And as you know the new movies and TV shows are hits and misses.

Fun fact: the only Star Trek I have ever watched is the original series.
Star Trek wasn't big in France in the 80s and 90s. I'm not even sure if the Nex Generation was broadcast before much later. So I never hopped on the bandwagon. I'm kinda curious about it these days, but don't have the time to catch up with yet another series.

Just look at the totality of the DCEU now that it's "over" it's kind of incredible that this thing went on for 15 total films and almost all of them are some of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Like the Friday the 13th movies didn't even go on for 15 films, and still more of them are good than what the DCEU had to offer. What a miserable collection of trash.

A full decade of DC films and the only Batman movie that doesn't also have Superman in it is the one where he's a cameo.

    DavidBHimself,

@rodhilton Isn't one of the Suicide Squad movies good? The one with the shark? (I can't tell, I haven't watch a single one)

I’ve been trying to get my head around what the issues of Mastodon federating with Threads actually are. I’d always suspected it would be potentially terrible, but couldn’t grasp exactly how the harm could be done. This well-written post by @kissane has done just that.

    https://mas.to/@kissane/111620930081617737

    DavidBHimself,

@jonhicks Sorry, but the post is terribly written in the fact that's it's very deceptive. It pretends to be factual and comprehensive but totally glosses over the most important part: the users, only to rehash the same fear mongering mantra that Meta is evil as if some people didn't know that.

    DavidBHimself, to threads

Almost every single conversation I've had for the past few days about the situation the anti-federation team has one motto and one motto only "Meta is evil!" As if we didn't already know that.

What they're overlooking is Threads users, and what they're totally missing is that by defederating their instances with Threads they're achieving absolutely nothing except punishing Threads users and preventing them from discovering the Social Web (aka the Fediverse).

Federation with Meta is happening. Whether we want it or not. It's not for us to decide, it's for Meta (and the same for whoever decides to join next) It's what an open protocol is. Something anyone and everyone can use. We often compare the fediverse to e-mail and it's the same. You can't prevent a company, as evil as it is from having an email server.

I'm sorry to say that, but if you want a walled-garden, maybe the is just not for you.

    DavidBHimself, to fediverse

Today I heard that the "Fediverse" should be called the "Social Web" instead and.... OMG, I love this.

As cute and original and all "Fediverse" is, if it wants to become mainstream and instantly make sense to everyone and anyone, "Social Web" is such a better name.

What do you think? Personally, I guess that's it, I'm done saying Fediverse... It'll be difficult, maybe I need a transition period.

After some careful consideration, I have decided to block threads.net on pixelfed.social and .art by default

However, users will have the ability to unblock the domain

Soon we will be selectively enforcing authorized fetch for accounts with domain blocks so as to provide the best of both worlds.

(I'm also shipping a command for :pixelfed: admins to easily add user domain blocks for all local users)

I'm eager to hear your feedback!

    DavidBHimself,

@d1re_w0lf @eduo @dansup @alexgranford Please tell me what can Threads do? (and yes, I know it's Facebook, who doesn't?).

Please, explain what can Threads do against PixelFed and the Fediverse? (and please don't say "embrace extend extinguish")
I want specifics, facts, not just this vague fear of the Boogeyman that I've been seeing since June.

    DavidBHimself,

@d1re_w0lf @dansup @alexgranford @eduo @are0h The whole "don't you know Threads is Facebook" sounded very scaremongering to me... Oh and by the way, I'm on Facebook, I have friends and family who are not terminally online and who don't live in a 2 km radius from me and with whom I'd like to stay in touch. You're lucky that you all don't.

And yes, I read Ploum's article when it was first published and I disagree with him.
