The only feeling I have about starship is dread.

They want to use that to launch batches of HUNDREDS of Starlinks at once. And guess where all those Starlinks will end up? The pieces that don't make it to the ground will end up in our upper atmosphere, screwing up the stratosphere, the ozone layer, who knows what else because SpaceX isn't required to do any environmental assessments of this.

Shit. Maybe a good time to post this essay I wrote yet again: https://theconversation.com/an-astronomers-lament-satellite-megaconstellations-are-ruining-space-exploration-215653

The loko i’a system of native fishponds in Hawai‘i has for generations provided sustenance to Indigenous communities, supported fish populations in surrounding waters, and generally improved water quality.

These benefits, long understood by native Hawaiians, have now been confirmed by scientists in a new study that looked at the restoration of one such fishpond.

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration panel has voted against approving the use of MDMA in conjunction with therapy to treat post-traumatic stress disorder. MDMA, more commonly known as Ecstasy, is among a slate of psychoactive street drugs that have seen increased advocacy and interest for their potential therapeutic uses. The FDA panelists cited gaps in data and accusations of therapist misconduct during the studies in their decision. Read more from CBS News.

Toxic forever chemicals are dramatically on the rise in Lake Michigan and have been detected in all of the Great Lakes.

The new study found airborne concentrations of PFAS — per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances — are much higher near Chicago, Detroit and other urban areas. Previous research recorded similar patterns for other toxic chemicals.

A beluga can change the shape of its "melon" (the bulbous mass on its head) at will. Could this be used as a form of communication? A new study indicates that it might. Here's a story from @hakaimagazine with a six-panel comic illustrating the five different melon shapes and in what contexts some are used.

First Privet Hawk-moth of the year, Sphinx ligustri, in our garden last night. The largest of the British moths, can be up to 120mm wingspan.

Some years I've seen several on the same evening along with a variety of the other Hawk-moths. But, 2024 is not proving a very good year for any of the moths here, so far :-(

Temperatures in India, like the rest of the world, have been rising due to Climate Change.

India is ranked 4th among the list of countries most affected by climate change in 2015.

This is the 3rd straight year of severe heatwaves in India and the 6th in the last 10 years (see table below).

Temp. rises are also causing Himalayan glaciers to retreat, threatening the flow rate of major rivers.
