A Brit just explained to me that a lot of homeownership in England is based on a leasehold arrangement, where you own your house, but RENT the land from a landowner. When the lease expires, the land AND THE HOUSE IT CONTAINS reverts to the landowner, even if you’ve paid for it. While leases can be extended basically indefinitely, it is possible for it to lapse and for landowners to seize the house that YOU BUILT for zero money.

Can someone confirm this? If true, that is…landlording and “generational passive income” taken to a WHOLE new level.

@drahardja Not residential, but almost all the property along the SF waterfront is like that. Ground leases of 50-60 years. Cost of building & maintaining structures is shouldered by leaseholders.

People are angry about what , an ally of *rump, is doing, so they are going to help put *rump back in the White House so Israel can kill even more Palestinians.
That about right?

Much as I dislike the theft of human labor that feeds many of the products we see today, I have to agree with @pluralistic that law is the wrong way to address the problem.

To frame the issue concretely: think of whom copyright law has benefited in the past, and then explain how it would benefit the individual creator when it is applied to . (Hint: it won’t.)

Copyright law is already abused and extended to an absurd degree today. It already overreaches. It impoverishes society by putting up barriers to creation and allowing toll-collectors to exist between citizen artists and their audience.

Labor law is likely what we need to lean on. and protect creators in a way that copyright cannot. Inequality and unequal bargaining power that lead to exploitation of artists and workers is what we need to address head-on.

Copyright will not save us.

Today in Labor History March 17, 1966: 100 striking Mexican American and Filipino farmworkers marched from Delano, California to Sacramento to pressure the growers and the state government to answer their demands for better working conditions and higher wages, which were, at the time, below the federal minimum wage. By the time the marchers arrived, on Easter Sunday, April 11, the crowd had grown to 10,000 protesters and their supporters. A few months later, the two unions that represented them, the National Farm Workers Association, led by César Chávez, and the Agricultural Workers Organizing Committee, joined to form the United Farm Workers. The strike was launched on September 8, 1965, by Filipino grape pickers. Mexicans were initially hired as scabs. So, Filipino strike leader Larry Itliong approached Cesar Chavez to get the support of the National Farm Workers Association, and on September 16, 1965, the Mexican farm workers joined the strike. During the strike, the growers and their vigilantes would physically assault the workers and drive their cars and trucks into the picket lines. They also sprayed strikers with pesticides. The strikers persevered nonviolently. They went to the Oakland docks and convinced the longshore workers to support them by refusing to load grapes. This resulted in the spoilage of 1,000 ten-ton cases of grapes. The success of this tactic led to the decision to launch a national grape boycott, which would ultimately help them win the struggle against the growers.

One thing y’all should know about the people behind these anti-Tesla ads is that it’s financed by Dan O’Dowd, a billionaire and media troll who owns Green Hills Software, a safety-focused real time embedded operating system and toolset company.

O’Dowd uses media smear campaigns (like this one) to discredit companies that refuse to license his software. He gets himself published on tech outlets claiming one catastrophic safety thing or another that will happen unless some major client switched to his product. That’s his MO, and his current target is Tesla, probably because they are popular.

I experienced Green Hills’ hard sell personally when we were selecting an RTOS for Honeywell’s aviation products. We ended up qualifying our own hand-rolled, extremely simple kernel at a fraction of the price of a GHS license.

Anyway, I’m no Tesla fanboy, but Dan O’Dowd and the Dawn Project are just another self-serving billionaire venture. They are NOT your friends. https://mstdn.social/@TechCrunch/111920750045905302

The DOJ can only charge people who’ve broken a federal law. What federal law did they break? It’s frustrating as hell, but it is what it is.
Here’s a good argument for charging them under Texas law, but unfortunately that would require Texas prosecutors to act, which they won’t. It sucks.

Third, it may be intended to shame Texas officials into taking action against the cowards.
