Just think about it!

In just 14 days, Microsoft pivoted from "do security" in an internal memo on May 5 to "let's install spyware on everyone's PC" on May 21.

That must be a world record in bad corporate management

"Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

The computer, however, will stop you from recording DRM'd content.

Find it fascinating that when faced with drawing safety and security boundaries, the primary beneficiary is not the owner of the device, or the person using it, but random corporations who control the intellectual property rights.

The system doesn't work for you.

The CFPB capped credit card fees. Banks are suing.

Medicare is negotiating drug prices. Pharma is suing.

The FTC banned noncompetes. Business groups are suing.

The CEO-to-worker pay gap at America’s largest companies was 344-to-1 last year.

In 1965, the ratio was 20-to-1.

This explosion in CEO pay relative to the pay of workers isn’t because CEOs have become so much more valuable.

They've just gamed the system to line their pockets.

ALSO, LEST YOU WONDER: Yes, justices shouldn't own individual stocks at all — please, write those stories, use this as an example! — but that isn't the point of my story, which is that a justice voting on trans cases might have participated in an anti-trans boycott. That's its own problem.

Please - if you use Mastodon regularly, pay for your use of the platform.

I find it insane that Stux - who runs mstdn.social is paying out of pocket every month to keep mstdn.social alive, because people are not funding the platform they use enough to cover the bare running costs, let alone the admin time he puts in.

please, look up who is running your server and pay them money. You are costing them, personally, money.

Thank you.

Half of Amazon warehouse workers struggle with food and housing costs.

A third of the workers have had to rely on at least one government assistance program.

Amazon's stock hit an all time high in April. Jeff Bezos is now worth $203 billion.

You wont believe the number of stormtroopers theyre deploying against unarmed students unless you see it. This is just one side: at least 7 police departments with at least two layers at every point of egress, with several layers in back for rear control and rotation. They've got the army out against your kids for having the audacity to do whatever they can to stop a genocide

a wide (~50m?) staircase with maybe 20 rows of cops in full riot gear stare down a handful of unarmed students

It's ridiculous that most Democrats are just watching passively as Republicans are passing mask bans. In states where Democrats hold power, they should absolutely be passing laws that codify and protect people's rights to wear a mask.

I've been a happy user of Nothing audio for years. I've had a pair of Nothing Ear(1), which I replaced with a Nothing Ear(2) when one of the earbuds broke, and then I even got their Nothing Phone (actually my current phone). It's, basically, the brand I've felt more loyalty towards for literal decades.

So when two days ago I stepped over one of the earphones and cracked the plastic shell, I was sure I was going to get a new pair.

Long story short, I've been just checking their site, looking for the name and price of their last model, and saw this:

And... fuck this shit. Fuck it with a flamming iron rod. You were making some awesome, high-quality and more or less cheap, earphones, you were doing so good, but you had to integrate this earth-burning snake oil on your product? fuck it. I won't pay for any fucking hardware integrated with that nightmare.

So long story short:

Any recommendation for some good bluetooth earphones? No apple products, but anything else I'm willing to consider.

Why has water become such an issue for AI and data centers?

Because for years, Big Tech boosted energy efficiency and reduced CO2 by using more and more water.

It also "reduced" CO2 by causing a massive increases in e-waste.

There is the huge danger in focusing only on CO2. To reduce CO2, we often degrade other life systems such as water, soil, biodiversity.

CO2 is increasingly being used for greenwashing.

We must measure the total cost to the environment, not just part of the cost.
