@atomicpoet I feel compelled to tell you there a Devolver Digital #videogame sale going on right now. I haven't gotten any of them (besides the Hotline Miami games, out of their original sale) but I feel really compelled to grab a couple more.
From what I can tell, the benefit is that it gives me the option for another face. If I want to be mildly unrecognizable, I can just grow out my facial hair.
But other than that, I have no idea why men grow beards.
Some absolute mad lad took the classic Amiga FPS Alien Breed 3D and converted it into the Doom engine. Specifically, GZDoom.
Now why would anyone do that? Because the original Alien Breed 3D had an oversized HUD, was over-pixelated, and the action might as well have been rendered on a postage stamp. Have a look for yourself.
But now that it’s running on the Doom engine, we can finally experience Alien Breed 3D with much better graphics – rendered at full screen too.
And it really demonstrates that Team17 had a great sense for shooters. The Alien Breed remake trilogy really demonstrates this, and its one of my favourite XBLA games.
By no means is Alien Breed 3D as good as Doom – what game is? – but I think it’s better than most so-called “Doom clones” of the 90s.
The Doom engine port is called Project Osiris, and it’s available free on itch.io. I’ve played it for myself, and yeah, it’s awesome!
@atomicpoet I was about to ask how they were able to adapt the original graphics into a high definition clone, but it appears the answer is "part remaining", probably on account of how little could be made out in some parts. (Were Alien Breed characters made as 2D sprites in high enough resolution to replicate?)
Regardless, the original definitely does look like quite the achievement.
A fascinating technical breakdown of why Wolfenstein 3-D killed the Commodore Amiga.
Simply put, the Amiga never had anything similar to VGA graphics and “chunky mode” that allowed for the environments possible in Wolfenstein. While the Amiga was a 2D powerhouse, it’s dependence on bitplanes meant that getting any kind of FPS running would take some technical wizardry.
I was always curious about this. In the 90s, I was mostly a Mac user. Just like Amiga, we used 68K Motorola CPUs.
And we had our Doom killer. It was Marathon. You didn’t even need impressive specs to run it. Marathon just asked for a 68020 CPU, System 6, and 3MB of RAM.
In comparison, the best FPS the Amiga had was Alien Breed 3D. It too ran on a 68020 CPU. To be blunt, though, it did not run as well as Marathon. The Amiga really held it back.
@atomicpoet One of these days I need to play Marathon. I've played Doom (who hasn't, right?) but from what I've heard, there's much more story from Marathon, for a game of its time that was, as I understand it, a boomer shooter on its own.

I say this because a friend from out of town just went to a Szechuan restaurant in Vancouver, thought it was going to be business as usual, and now he’s doubled over because the spice is too much for him.
He tells me, it’s so bad, that he feels the spice eking out of his pores. 🤣
@atomicpoet I'm not very good with food identification, but I'm pretty sure that's like 75% Thai chili peppers, just infusing the rest of the sauce with their heat. I don't think I've ever had anything with that many, and a few on their own will already do a lot of damage!
