I'm still thinking about and . I like both, but it makes me sad how XMPP is so undersupported. It seems like it would be less complex and more efficient. But maybe I'm wrong.

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell I've always been a fan of everyone owning their own server and placing their own parts of conversations (and social media posts) on there.

Then the "thread" or conversation view is assembled by polling different servers and combining the posts.

This means the only authentication needed is that which the server owner has already.

Texture Artists! How would you go about turning this photo I took into an evenly lit texture? It doesn't need to be tileable.

I know I can stretch it to be nice and straight, but then, how could I make the light more even? Is that even possible?

I know there are plenty of good (and probably free) wood textures, but for my project, I want everything to be handmade from scratch. I want to try at least. Either procedural, or from a photo like this.

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell There's some trick with the Fourier transform and removing low-frequency components.

I think: you do a blurred tile (so the edges fade on all four sides), then removing low-frequency components like your uneven lighting.

Sending files locally, a thread.

My wife and I are in the lounge room. She's at her PC, I'm on the couch. She says: "Can you send me those pictures from last night?" I say: "Sure."

Now, "Surely", I think, "Surely I can send her those pictures 2 meters away without having to go through an american tech company.

sjb,

@fell You could also e-mail the pictures.

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell Direct peer-to-peer file transfer has always been a little tricky to set up.

There are options like Box and having your own server. I upload big files to stephenbrooks.org somewhere because everyone can get files via HTTP. Windows sometimes tries to block executables but other than that it's OK.

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell You don't have a very good way to choose who you receive files from, though! I think that's a lot of the problem here. You'll need some sort of security or login to allow a specific person to send files to you (running an FTP server for example).

Amazon has an "item arrived too late" return reason (why I'm returning this is a story, but basically I ended up ordering 3 panels over 2 weeks which all ended up being late-likely-lost-no-wait-eventually-delivered).

What's odd is it triggers a default "replace with the exact same item" response. "Sure, your item was late, but want to make it even MORE late?"

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@foo Do you (eventually) end up with lots of free or discounted panels this way?

If I bought a little colour screen from AliExpress, how would I drive it? Like, can I just hook the pins up to an or ( in my case), write a bit of software and see an image? Can they usually run at 60 Hz?

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell Some write via the SPI or I2C bus.

Bigger LCD screens like 640x480 ones are HDMI.

I did have one weird 480p LCD touchscreen that interfaced straight into my Pi B's 40 pins but I didn't like that as it left no pins free.

So I was looking at a fresh youtube feed (an environment that usually doesn't touch anything google and without being logged in). As I was scrolling down the list of videos I noted that it was nothing but clickbait. This is what youtube is these days.

And then I see this ad (or message, or whatever you want to call it) from google. How ironic.

sjb,

@loke I never use the feed I just go to channels I like. It's also good at recommending similar videos.

I feel like I'm the only person in the world who disabled their phones lockscreen. Anyone else?

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell Unfortunately I'm not allowed to disable it because I have 2FA authenticators on there. (They will not work on a phone with no password or pattern lock!)

sjb,
@sjb@mstdn.io avatar

@fell Ah but the 2FA app gets into work systems, so it's really their call if I use it on my personal phone. I could have them give me a work phone just for that, but it seemed excessive.

Also it's interesting how 2FA becomes 1FA if I'm using the phone browser and the password is stored in the browser.

I’ve had this air compressor for 9 years. The old hose was bulky and the connections were always put away with the hose. It was used when “needed”.

Recently I got a coiled hose which now lives with the tank, and mounted a tool bag on the side for the connectors.

In the last few weeks it’s gotten more project use than in the past 9 years, simply because it’s accessible and convenient.
