If you could watch an individual water molecule, about once in 10 hours you'd see it do this!

As it bounces around, every so often it hits another water molecule hard enough enough for one to steal a hydrogen nucleus - that is, a proton - from the other!

The water molecule with the missing proton is called a hydroxide ion, OH⁻. The one with an extra proton is called a hydronium ion, H₃O⁺.

This process is called the 'autoionization' of water. Thanks to this, roughly one in ten million molecules in a glass of water are actually OH⁻ or H₃O⁺, not the H₂O you expect.

And this explains why protons can move through water much more easily than larger ions can. Let's watch how it works.

We now know Donald Trump committed crimes to win his first election.

We know that he committed crimes to try to overturn his second election loss.

We are five months from the next election. Why would it be any different this time? Except that now, the GOP is his willing accomplice.

Discussion with Attorneys and Reporters discussing that we now know Donald Trump committed crimes to win his first election. Climate Scientist laughs derisively: "By 2050, most long-distance holiday destinations will be uninhabitable, so I expect the majority of long-distance air traffic to be non-existent by 2050."

Of course Biden won’t pardon his son. It would be scandalously corrupt for the president to use his pardon power in behalf of a family member.

The only reason anyone even asks is that Trump used his pardon power corruptly, in behalf of cronies, donors, and—literally—his own criminal co-conspirators. By and large the news media gave him a pass. Just Trump being Trump.

@JamesGleick

I agree re biden, however with Trump, there was a graphic posted here a while back where there are comparisons with some of Trumps statements and those of Adolf Hitler. What should perhaps be of concern is not the fact Trump will pardon himself and a few cronies BUT what he then intends to do to the people who prosecute him, from judges downwards. He could put people who were just doing their job, in prison for a long time or worse ( perhaps order their execution ). He considers those people his enemies.

Biden may not be the best alternative, he is the ONLY alternative to Trump and the GOP, from what I am seeing here on Fedi, The whole GOP (or those who pull the strings) are dangerous, policies on Transgener care, abortion. Those who seem a little more open and rational do seem to be silent.

This is an IOCREST-brand USB to RS-232 serial adapter, which I bought from a seller on AliExpress. It arrived in exactly the same time as an identical eBay listing said it would, for literally half the price - if eBay is still your default go-to for weird stuff like this, keep in mind dropshippers are probably fleecing you.

This adapter contains an FTDI chipset, not the much cheaper CH340, and it's time to see if this is the reason I couldn't get serial mice working natively on Windows 10.

Hi

Not sure if this is quite what you are looking for. Reading a serial port seems easy enough in Python. I have done this with the arduino, just neeed to keep changing the serial port part of the program ( which is down to my lack of understanding probably ).

In terms of analysing the data, seems to be lots of tools to do this, I know https://www.freecodecamp.org/ do courses on data anaysis, as you can just view the course, it may be a starting point to finding some tools python libraries to do what you need.

zleap,

Yes, but some rivers such as the river Wye cross borders, so the why goes from England to Wales,l so if hte outflow is in England flows in to Wales, does the Wye then become a welsh river (on the Welsh side of the border). So in which case it becomes a British river.

I do see your point, however it would be interesting how this works cross border as described.

The problem that I see is that change takes time to take effect,. Education for example takes a long time before we see results and those results are usually benchmarked with exam grades. Early years is key to a childs education outcomes much later (e.g GCSEs at 16) so any changes won't take effect or be seen immediately

Gettting more medical professionals means we need to perhaps invest in STEM in primary, secondary and at higher levels, so thoses who are interested can be taught to a high level with fully resourced classrooms / labs etc. But that could be a 20 year plan if you take in to account a doctor needs to do graducate, then post graduate study (even if going the apprentice route still takes a long time).

In 5 years time, if people have not seen immediate change they will say LabM our have failed even if they have succeeded in laying a foundation for the future.

Perhaps the Tories are right in that we need to get rid of so called Mickey Mouse courses and focus university on acaemic topics such as STEM or it is STEAM as the A is arts. I fail to see a benefit in a degree in the Beatles or Taylor Swift for yexample.

We also need to teach critical thinking at all levels, good reserch skills, yes embrace AI but in a beneficial way. If a student can't write without the use of AI to write it for them, we have failed them. AI is a tool to help, not a tool to replace you doing the work.

I just hope who ever gets in is not the Tories and can, as you said make bold decisions and be honest about the time scale they need to say this is going to be a 10-15 year plan, we hope to carry on in 5 years and how we perform over 5 will determine the long term outcomes.

Janan Ganesh from the FT nails the Tories' (and not only) misunderstanding of "The Special Relationship" which remains anchored in the last century and the one before that. No, free trade does not lie at the heart of American psyche. Quite the reverse. And that means that the leap to "free trade" by the Brexiters, Truss and the rest was the equivalent of putting your life's savings into DVD manufacturing in 2009.
