drahardja, So much of that old-timey sound we associate with 1920s music is thanks to the unique (and limited) audio response of the carbon microphone, which was the state of the art for the time.
Here’s a recording of a modern performer singing into a 1920s carbon microphone!

BEK97, I moved my turntable from my digital AV receiver to a 70s Pioneer amp that was collecting dust in my wife's grandma's closet, connected to a pair of 80s JBL cabinet speakers from my dad (woofers refoamed 20 years ago). The amp is powerful and sounds great, except the right speaker channel is gritty (bad capacitor?), so until I get it serviced, I guess I'll be listening to #mono records. #VintageAudio #VintageHiFi @vinylrecords
BEK97, @vinylrecords #NowPlaying DUKE ELLINGTON - MASTERPIECES BY ELLINGTON in uncut concert arrangements (Columbia, 1956 reissue). Originally released in 1951, one of the first 12-inch LPs to take advantage of the extended play time with long-form arrangements. Masterpieces indeed. #DukeEllington #jazz #vinyl #mono
BEK97, @vinylrecords #NowPlaying OTIS BLUE / OTIS REDDING SINGS SOUL (Volt/Sundazed, 2001 reissue; originally released 1965). Not only did my camera distort the cover, but the left channel on this vintage amp just started cracking up too. Welp, my brief mono record run has come to an end. Hopefully I'll get this system running clean stereo sound soon!

janbeta, New video! I'm repairing and restoring a 1977/78 Sansui SC-1100 tape deck. Replacing the belts, recapping the boards and doing lots of cleaning and lubrication. janbeta, In the lab, doing stuff. Bought this deck from a coworker years ago. At first glance, it needs new belts (the old ones turned into goo), new capacitors and some new lights. #Sansui #TapeDeck #VintageAudio #InTheLabDoingStuff
janbeta, They took great pride in the fake woodgrain, it seems. #Sansui #TapeDeck #VintageAudio #InTheLabDoingStuff
janbeta, The capacitor with the leakage visible on top ate its own leg. Thankfully the solder pad was not damaged, just needed a good scrubbing with a glass fiber pen and some IPA. Power board fully recapped now and the deck turns on fine. Next up: replacing the belts. #Sansui #TapeDeck #VintageAudio #InTheLabDoingStuff
Same capacitor on its side with the value of 1000uF and 25V visible. It’s an old school blue Nichicon brand capacitor.
Recapped power board in the tape deck. I used Panasonic FC series capacitors to replace the original Nichicons.
janbeta, (edited ) New video! I'm doing some maintenance on my beloved #Technics SL-1710 turntable from the seventies. I'm recapping it, replacing the dampening fluid in the tone arm lift mechanism and doing some general cleaning and lubrication. davbucci, @janbeta nice! I recently refurbished two turntables, a Garrard DD75 and a Thorens TD160MkII. I quite enjoyed working on them, it was fun.
janbeta, @davbucci I'm still a bit clumsy and fearful around delicate mechanical parts (especially if they are on a device that I can't imagine living without) but it's incredibly rewarding when things go according to plan with these elderly turntables! :D
janbeta, In the lab, doing stuff with a 1970s turntable. Delicate mechanics still scare me a bit. #VintageAudio #VintageHifi #Recordplayer #Turntable #InTheLabDoingStuff
janbeta, Delicate mechanics.
janbeta, Old school electronics.
Solder side of the PCB. The traces look nicely rounded and hand drawn.
janbeta, (edited ) New video! I'm repairing a Sony TA-F550ES amplifier from the early 1990s that suffered from some intermittent sound issues. YouTube: https://youtu.be/o3FykCRHAK4 PeerTube: https://makertube.net/w/6vSfkpv8ooSKpJXSJtwACU #VintageAudio #Sony #Repair #Hifi #Amplifier #Troubleshooting
limneticvillains, @janbeta I know someone who owns this exact model.
janbeta, @limneticvillains Nice! These things are amazing amps! :)

thomasfuchs,
BonnettsBooks, @thomasfuchs I'm fairly certain that's the model tuner/amp we used here before Dad splurged for our NAD in the late '80s(?). Good machine!
thomasfuchs, @BonnettsBooks peak wattage wars
