Mechanical Keyboards

I ordered a and also want to learn . I already can do with my own system with a variable amount of fingers that I internalized the past decades. But learning 10 finger typing is like learning to walk again 😓

@AAMfP@fosstodon.org avatar

@svenjacobs
How is touch typing different from 10 finger? Touch typing is, by definition, using 10 fingers...
There is no "your" touch typing: as far as I know there is only one way, isn't it?

@svenjacobs

It's a great way to embed muscle memory for all finger positions, yes. It's not great as a typing practice program though, as it uses too many random combinations that actually won't teach you ngrams. Ngrams are the combinations of letters that form many common words. Take "combinations" as an example. It contains "comb" which is a word in itself.... it contains "bin" which is also a word in itself. It contains "nations" which is a word in itself. It also contains "tion" which is a very, very common ngram in a massive number of other words. As is "ion" This is how a competent typist can still manage to type words they've perhaps never seen before. Most words are made up of combinations also used in other words. Your brain recognises patterns like this, and just remembers how to type them. When you begin, you are remembering where each individual letter is, but as you progress, you will start to recognise these ngrams, and the associated muscle memory for them. When I read a word now, my fingers just type it without any conscious thought from me.

So.... once you have all green on Keybr.... move to Monkeytype set to 10K. Once you start to feel as if you are making progress, also introduce ngram practice using this.. It's massively helpful and really, really speeds up progress.

[edit] One more piece of advice. Do not chase speed. Most people are obsessed with speed, and will actually judge how good you are based on speed. This is a mistake. Chasing speed, by default, is pushing yourself beyond your abilities, and you will be making more mistakes. You learn faster by typing correctly, even if it's slower. If you do make mistakes, backspace them out (or better still, ctrl+ backspace them out) and retype them a couple of times, correctly. Every time you type a word wrong, and do not correct it, you are actually embedding that mistake into your muscle memory. Slow down to go faster. Eventually, once you have good muscle memory, you will just naturally get faster without even trying to, but you will also be accurate if you do it this way. I see videos all the time of people typing at 140wpm or whatever, but A) it's usually a 30 second test, which is useless. B) It's using monkeytype set to default 'English' which is only 200 words, and C) their accuracy is not great. I only type at 80wpm, but that's real life, with punctuation and capitals etc. If I do a 30 second Monkeytype test set to default 'English' with no punctuation or capitals, I can do 120wpm or so, but that's not real life, and means nothing. Chase accuracy, not speed. Speed comes naturally... accuracy does not. You need to embed it into muscle memory with hard work.

not that we really need "more stuff". Quite the opposite.

My keyboard is a modified Filco Majestouch 2 wired keyboard with Cherry MX Blue switches (lubed and dampened, natch).

I got the case and keycaps from Drop and it's a chonk of milled aluminium in a smoky finish.

I hope it lasts 20+ years.

robcee,
@robcee@fosstodon.org avatar

@AAMfP oh that’s very cool. post some details when you get it!

AAMfP,

@robcee
Sure!
I think I'll write something to @marco@write.as
I'm already thinking about keymap and layers...

DodoTheDev,
@DodoTheDev@front-end.social avatar

I've gone full nerd and added a to my work setup. 2 x 22inch (55cm) monitors with my laptop screen as a third displaying the keymapp app from ZSA to show me where the keys are on each layer (I'm slowly learning) and now an old trackball which was sitting around in the office. I haven't used one since I was little, so I'll see how I get on with it for a week before I get my own.

DodoTheDev,
@DodoTheDev@front-end.social avatar

@chfkch @ayo
Yes, it's fast become my favourite. I had to use a standard keyboard this morning, and it felt so weird!! But it did take me a couple of weeks to get used to the split (even from a non-split ergonomic keyboard). I think it's mainly the matrix layout that's tripped me up, but I'm getting there.

ayo,
@ayo@ayco.io avatar

@DodoTheDev @chfkch i have a kinesis advantage 2 for my home office. I love the concave shape, but it’s not portable so I might go for these small ones next—though not any time soon I think 😄

@brunty Clearly the solution is just to give in and learn to use vim (not that I'm biased or anything).

atyai,

@brunty Trancend 60% and join us with 65%, only 1u wider but with 10% more functionality (and arrow keys)

Anyone recommendations for a low profile mechanical keyboard? Preferably swappable switches / keycaps.
My wife is looking for one as she got wrist problems with regular height ones.

@fallenhitokiri
Afraid not, I don't use low-profile, but good luck!

benjaminhollon,

@fallenhitokiri

I think, though, that Keychron does have some low-profile boards, and I really love my Keychron V4, so it might be worth looking into their models?

@AAMfP Well, the thing is that my kits are not yet ready. Get a budget option now and save some bucks for later ;) I'm working on it, maybe it works out until the end of the year...

I heard keyboards now need an AI key🤔 How about this one...?

vincentdettmer,

@thpoll it's a Dreamcast key!

@vincentdettmer Very similar indeed!

Nouveau batch arrivé! J'attends les contrôleurs pour le début du mois prochain, et il va bientôt y avoir à la vente :

  • 4 Redox filaires
  • 3 Redox wireless
  • 7 trackballs 4 boutons + scroll ring

Customisation possible mais avec un à deux mois de délai d'attente (les pièces ne se trouvent pas au supermarché du coin)

morayner,
@morayner@craftopi.art avatar

lanodan,
@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me avatar

What are the keys with tactile bumps called?

I use a different layout to type, but I'd like to be able to have my physical layout reflect what I'm actually typing. The problem is that moving the F and J keys to where they should be means the home row would be missing the tactile bumps, and I use those to recenter my hands when I'm not looking. I'd like to add keycaps for...

_,

Any similarities between the community and the community?

• Both will make you realize you were writing with a squishy poorly made piece of junk
• You're introduced to old tech that operates pretty differently but still more or less works the same
• You'll change your writing/typing habits because you don't need to press down so much
• You can technically get more bang for your buck
• Except you might get a little addicted to replacement parts

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@apfel in that case, what are you looking for in a pen? Barrel, line width, aesthetic?

apfel,

@paradoxmo i think my top priorities woukd be smooth writing, balance, aesthetic, in that order. To be quite honest I'm not in the market for a fountain pen right now, but it's very interesting to take a peak into the hobby!

apfel,

What if we reduced the key amount a bit more?

fabrik42,
@fabrik42@mastodon.social avatar

@apfel I like the idea, but I personally find the use of modifiers more straining than moving to dedicated keys. At least for most letter-keys.

How would typing workflow look like here?

apfel,

@fabrik42 the idea is basically this, moving V and ' to additional combos (maybe index+ring).
blue background indicates a combonof the two adjacent keys.
bottom text indicates the hold-function of the key (and top the normal tap-function).

Thx all.
After MUCH consideration, I ended up going for the Logitech MX Mechanical Mini.
While I was very tempted with other "low-profile" options (looking at you non-ISO Lofree Flow) this seemed a safer entry option (already had a complimenting Logi device, mostly for biz use, etc.) 🤓
So far, I'm quite liking it. Though, as someone who's been using "chicklet" keyboards since forever, it's gonna take some getting used to (my fingers are definitely feeling the workout! 😅)

Drop has a new dark Solarized (my open source colorscheme) keycap set. It looks great & is discounted right now. (No affiliation with this set, they produced it on their own. Not a sponsored post, this is just me proud that my colorscheme continues to be loved by many). https://drop.com/buy/drop-dcx-solarized-dark-keycap-set

Verso,
@Verso@mastodon.social avatar

@ethanschoonover you know I have a lot of words, and I don't have words to share the breadth and depth of my joy that Solarized is a thing that exists in my timeline. If Solarized is not the answer, you need to ask a better question. (: it's how I got into OmniOutliner, it looked "right" so then I could actually use it.

I had been wanting to try a mechanical keyboard, but I was daunted by the dizzying array of choices of components and styles.

Then I was gifted a KBDcraft Adam. I like it a lot, but the keys are SO SENSITIVE! If I THINK about the "D" key, I have typed a whole line of Ds before I can stop it.

So, now that I have "established a baseline" of the Adam and its "S² Engine" switches, what switches or other mods should I consider to add a bit of travel or effort?

Thx!

inaction_figure,
@inaction_figure@fosstodon.org avatar

@petejohanson One more question. Where do you buy them? I have done a couple searches, and looked on r/MechanicalKeyboards, and I'm thinking of going with mechanicalkeyboards.com.

I see they're on DigiKey as well, but their prices don't look good, unless it's more than one switch per "bag".

Thanks again!

Ymdkey.com
Many choices and, at least for Europe, no surprises since custom fees are included in shipping expenses.
Bought some times from them, always satisfied.
