Hello, fountain pen peeps. For those of you who have a Diplomat Aero, how do you find the grip? I tried one and felt it was too slippery and had to exchange it for a different pen. I really like the look of it, especially the flame version, but the metal grip didn't work for my small hands. ☹️ I'm also interested in the Elox Matrix Green (is it discontinued?), but it looks like it has the same metal grip.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jezlyn I didn’t find it too slippery, but I did find it too heavy.

Shosaikan goodies -

2 store exclusive inks made by Sailor and a Pilot Silvern. Although the Pilot maki-e pens were tempting, I don't have anything like the Silvern and think this pattern is gorgeous. And it's a Pilot, so writes like a dream.

Boy, am I glad Vinta wrap their ink bottles with film! My bottle of Tequila Sunrise from @cultpens leaked, but thankfully the film kept it from being a complete disaster, so only a little bit was lost.

@toga this happened to me with a Vinta ink too ):

Picked up "Italic Letters" from the Getty-Dubay series and the recommendation for lefties is to turn the page 90ish degrees (the picture is looking at my left hand and the page as I was). It's awkward and I'm unsure about it, but why not, I can always fall back to my reasonable Spencerian if I hate it. Working with a Kaweco with Noodler's Khruschev red

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@yetanotherjesse what do you think of Getty-Dubay so far? I often recommend it for people who want to “fix their handwriting”

Comparison part 2

Waterman Mysterious Blue (Blue-Black) old vs new formula

Very obvious from the back that the old ink is actually teal while the new is blue.

Part 1: https://penfount.social/@paradoxmo/112455437654702507

Comparison reverse

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@ankachaos that’s too bad. I like both formulas, the new formula is definitely on the bluer side of blue black, similar to Pilot Blue-Black. I think it’s most interesting in very wet pens, it doesn’t have the brilliance that Serenity Blue has even in finer/drier pens.

@edebill@wandering.shop avatar

Sad reality of ordering from a small place. You are lucky if the order ships promptly. Never mind if they give you a warning at order time, it might take a few weeks anyway. Mainly an issue if they’re the maker.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@edebill if you’re not aware, Pen Venture carries Gravitas and they ship much more quickly and are more pleasant to deal with than Gravitas themselves

Completely unscientific comparison between two editions of the same

Pic 1,2:

  • Waterman Blue-Black NOS (likely early 2000s)
  • Retro 51 Lincoln / FPR ultraflex 14k

Pic 3,4:

  • Waterman Mysterious Blue (c. 2020)
  • Opus 88 Jazz / Regalia Crossflex

Both on Tomoe River 52gsm original

Old ink leans teal if looking closely, and the sheen looks redder. The new ink is more straight up dark blue, and the sheen looks more gold. Purportedly reformulated ~2015.

In case you like fountain pen hacks, my friend JMC recently successfully installed a Pilot Parallel nib in the section of a Majohn/Moonman Wancai Mini eyedropper. It's a small pen but you're supposed to post the cap. The cap has enough space to close over the parallel nib.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@pixiecata I’ve heard this works on some other Moonman pens too like the C4 and M2 with various amounts of hackery needed?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@pixiecata yeah I believe M2 is 5mm similar to the Wancai Mini, and C4 is 6mm

of the day:
What was the worst experience you ever had with pens, ink, writing, or stationery? How would you advise people to avoid having a similar experience?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@backtoanalog how odd! I used my Pilot MR with Lamy Azurite for a long time, I wonder what about your particular pen that made it so picky

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@penfount Knocked over an bottle of Shin-kai onto wooden floor at a flat that I was renting at the time. Was too eager to start writing that I didn’t cap. Eventually I had to pay to replace the floorboards.

This was when I was first getting into FPs and didn’t know any better. Don’t be like me—always cap your ink bottle immediately after filling!

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jimp what would be your pick these days of a cheap reliable pen for daily use?

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@jimp the seal on the Lightive has been great for me. I’m using Sailor Seiboku in it currently, has never failed to start up. Before I had a Birmingham dye ink in there for 2 years using once every few weeks, and never had a problem.

@abrokenjester@mastodon.nz avatar

Question for experts: is it normal that my Pilot MR runs dry after writing 1-2 A5 pages of text? Using the converter that comes with it.

New to convertors (always used cartridges before) so perhaps I'm doing something wrong.

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@abrokenjester have you tried with cartridge to see if it still happens? It sounds like perhaps you’re not filling the converter up very well, the squeeze converters can be a bit tricky since you can’t see the ink level.

You could try the Moonman A1 or Wing Sung 659 converter as an alternative. Here’s a rundown on our blog: https://penfount.ink/alternatives-con-40/

So my no buy because of new floors is now because of new hoose! From the city, to the coast, to a wooded dell in the middle of nowhere in less than five years. As I’ve aged, my ability to tolerate others has diminished to the point of non-existence! That’s why our new neighbours are mostly deer, foxes and badgers ☺️

paradoxmo,

@Fury ink eradicator only works on inks which are specifically washable royal blue. So royal blues from most German pen companies qualify, as does Waterman Serenity Blue

grayrattus, to drawing
@grayrattus@mastodon.social avatar

Recently I started to travel a lot again and I don't really have motivation and time for drawing practice.

Today though I managed to get some:
This time I was experimenting with quick sketch. Instead of really looking at proportions between shapes I started with one shape and based whole drawing on circles with specific ratios.

That's why the nose it too big :bongoCat: It's easy to get lost when you loose reference and try to go faster with

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@quoidian @grayrattus @jimp @toga the more hygienic version of this is to dip it quickly in a cup of water

paradoxmo,
@paradoxmo@penfount.social avatar

@grayrattus Strongly suggest trying Platinum Preppy, Starlet, or Plaisir before you give up on fountain pens. They’re rated not to dry out for 2 years.

And yes, it’s likely possible to fix the pens that dried up, take a pic of them and tell us what ink you used (or used stock cartridge) and we can help.
