Imagine losing your most precious colonial territory because the subjects object to animal fat used in the cartridges of their army-issued rifle.

@paninid I recently listened to an episode of the superb Empire podcast that covered this moment, which led to the end of the EIC and start of the imperial Raj proper. Many of the iconic stories of this era turn out to be apocryphal but def seems like the belief they were going to be made to use pig grease was the flash point for the rebelling troops; it was linked to a current rumor or belief that the (increasingly evangelical) British were going to start forcible religious conversions.

"lock her up" - a quick
"They wanted to see Democratic rival Hillary in prison over the use of her private email server while secretary of state.
And Mr was more than willing to back their calls for, at the very least, a fresh investigation. During the debates, he told Mrs Clinton:
"If I win, I am going to instruct my attorney general to get a special prosecutor to look into your situation.""

Off to Commit the First Act of Submersible Warfare on the Brits (1775) (lemmy.world)

Turtle (also called American Turtle) was the world’s first submersible vessel with a documented record of use in combat. It was built in 1775 by American David Bushnell as a means of attaching explosive charges to ships in a harbor, for use against the Royal Navy during the American Revolutionary War.

A Greek Kylix with an erotic scene, made around 480 BC. during the Late Archaic Period.

The woman's position, bent forward and leaning on a stool, could indicate her slave status. On the left is a sofa on which a padded cushion with a striped theme rests.

Another from the Lewis trip for #StandingStoneSunday.

Cleitir/Callanish 8, just over the 'Bridge over the Atlantic' to Great Bernera.

These ones feel particularly anthropomorphic - standing guard in a semi-circle, overlooking this narrow strait for the past 5,000 years.

: "consisting of an upturned tree-stump surrounded by 55 closely fitted oak posts, was originally built on the saltmarsh away from the sea and specialists estimate it to have been built of timbers dating from the spring of 2049 BC.
…positioned in an area protected from the sea by sand dunes and mud flats…this swampy area created a layer of peat which slowly covered the timbers, protecting them from decay."
