Sometimes marketing is all about waiting long enough for your audience to forget about the 80s and 90s.

I love how ALDI celebrates this brilliant new design that saves 40% of plastic by removing the plastic lid.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

But that design is also a great example how we just started adding plastic to pretty much everything for 1.2% more comfort. That old design was always ok, it never really needed the plastic lid in the first place.

miles_leif,
@miles_leif@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier aren’t especially these „Tetra packs“ anyways the most unrecyclable bs?

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@miles_leif tbh, I’m not sure how well those can be recycled. We are at least given the impression that it is possible by the recycling system.

martin_ueding,
@martin_ueding@bonn.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @miles_leif
Apparently the resource impact from driving glass bottles back and forth is comparable to the manufacturing of there plastic and metal foil containers.

And in the end a lot of plastic can just be burned for heat. If one would have burned the oil for heat, the plastic was virtually free. With heat pumps and solar/wind that argument is moot, though.

bayindirh,
@bayindirh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@martin_ueding @bastianallgeier @miles_leif The problem with burning plastic is the amount of toxic chemicals you create during the process.

Glass is not perfect, but it's infinitely recyclable, and with electrification of the fleets, I guess the impact will drop over time.

Most couriers and distribution networks moved to all-electric vehicles recently, and still continuing to do so.

Plus you don't need to melt the glass to recycle/upcycle. Finely ground glass has tons of uses.

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@miles_leif yep, just looked it up. The official claim is 76% recyclable but it seems to be more like 30% in reality. Great!

miles_leif,
@miles_leif@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier was just looking for it too. In general recycling is not really working. But that does not even feel like a surprise

iju,
@iju@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier @miles_leif

Correct me if I'm wrong, but "tetra packs" (eg. those small juice boxes; tomato pyree) have aluminium, but those one litre cartons (eg. for milk, juice) do not.

Both manufactured by Tetra, though.

Deus,
@Deus@charcha.cc avatar

@bastianallgeier The people recommended that? "Twist and open instead of reaching out for a scissor" OR "You're picnicking and you forgot your knife or scissor".

A guess.

gillyberlin,
@gillyberlin@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier Fun fact: my mom (in her 80s) never uses all these plastic opening-things, she always cuts them open like she did for most of here life 😅

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@gillyberlin kudos to your mom for her silent protest 😆

emill1984,
@emill1984@101010.pl avatar

@bastianallgeier @gillyberlin at the end You still have to cut them open because there's always a bit left that doesn't want to flow via cap 🤣

grb090423,
@grb090423@mastodon.social avatar

@gillyberlin @bastianallgeier

Have to say I agree with your mum. I cut them open because my hands struggle to open the plastic lid (arthritis).

aschatermees,
@aschatermees@mastodon.social avatar

@grb090423 @gillyberlin @bastianallgeier
And then there's the infuriating infantillisation of securing the lid to a ring so as not to lose it... Resulting in it spilling onto whatever you're pouring into... 😓

prefec2,
@prefec2@norden.social avatar

@bastianallgeier the old design had the advantage to be able to get all the content out. Also it is cheaper to produce.

castudentskiadda,
@castudentskiadda@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier nice explanation

BoomlandJenkins,
@BoomlandJenkins@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier "Convenience plastic"

We definitely need to get that out of our production lines.

KlemensZ,

@bastianallgeier Früher gab es die Getränkekartons nur so. Jetzt feiert sich Aldi als Retter der Welt.

fell,
@fell@ma.fellr.net avatar

@bastianallgeier I mean, of course they market is as if it's their awesome new idea.

But still, they are technically admitting that a plastic spout was a bad idea and they are going back to the old design. That's pretty awesome if you ask me.

ronanmcd,
@ronanmcd@mastodon.green avatar

@bastianallgeier this also pours better than those new convoluted lids

ucf,
@ucf@mastodon.social avatar

Ich habe nur darauf gewartet.

Ich warte immer noch auf die standardisierte Universalmehrwegglasflasche, die man überall zurückgeben kann. Mit bayerischem Bier ist das in D zumindest schon fast Realität.

@bastianallgeier @ctietze I bought one recently and my kid brought it me completely perplexed on how it was supposed to be opened.

Had ALDI waited another generation, that institutional knowledge would have been lost!

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

@yonomitt @ctietze The ancient craft of milk-carton-opening. Transmitted over centuries from one generation to the next 🤣

@bastianallgeier @yonomitt Ha, glad they realized this crucial step in ensuring the lore and tradition are passed on is required right now!

itscarryl,
@itscarryl@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier after all the painful ridges on the plastic tops, I’d prefer this. I can think of two bottles I’ve used recently with wider and wider-spaced ridges. My mum often can’t twist any of them, they’re too tight, and I need to cover them with fabric to grip without pain.

SuperDicq,

@bastianallgeier The worst part about drink cartons is actually not the plastic cap, but it is that the entire carton is coated with plastic on the inside making the entire paper carton not recyclable.

If they really wanted to reduce waste they would put these drinks in glass bottles again.

Tees,
@Tees@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier cool, I love this!

shisuko,

dalias,

@bastianallgeier Yeah screw accessibility... 🙄 🤬

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@dalias @bastianallgeier Are the screw tops much of an improvement, accessibility-wise? Boxes are one thing (eg, shelf-stable milk), but on cartons like that where it's a twisting motion on such a small thing, at an angle combined with the roof of the carton getting in the way.. Feels like a toss-up.

4nti,
@4nti@mastodon.social avatar

@bastianallgeier

bastianallgeier,
@bastianallgeier@mastodon.social avatar

Drarok,

@bastianallgeier ah yes, the classic “impossible to open” style of container. Shame they couldn’t improve it this time.
Don’t get me wrong, less plastic is good! I’d just rather we also move to useable solutions.
