A tin of crushed pineapple, a packet of marshmallows and a hefty dose of pistachio dust and this delicious Georgia salad could be yours for lunch. 🤮
Optional extra: an entire tub of "whipped topping", whateverthefuck that is.
Americans: shut up about beans on toast forever.

@fkamiah17 I remember the jelloo salad craze of the 60s. Lime jello and coleslaw. It was revolting.

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@Dianora I saw that being served at a restaurant in Savannah in ... 1998 😬

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@fkamiah17 Ewww I remember more revolting salads from my youth I no longer see up here in Canada. Like this one:

https://cantstayoutofthekitchen.com/2013/09/01/heavenly-cole-slaw/

Good riddance.

@Dianora @fkamiah17
My mother's fav lime jello abomination involved carrot shred, finely diced celery, chopped walnuts, and cottage cheese. Absolutely vile.

In the meantime, I love . I have it often.

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@kelvin0mql @Dianora Sounds like child abuse to me 😂
Beans on toast is delish. Extra yum with poached eggs 👌

Dianora,
@Dianora@ottawa.place avatar

@kelvin0mql @fkamiah17 The lime jello with mandarin orange slices with coleslaw were bad too.
At potlucks people would bring some vile "food" like this.

jimbush,
@jimbush@beige.party avatar

@fkamiah17 Hey! That's Pistachio Pudding. Loved it as a kid, but all that sugar would make my teeth hurt now.

It should be classified as a dessert. No idea why it's considered salad.

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@jimbush It should be classified as a health hazard 😬
The woman in the clip called it "Watergate Salad".

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@fkamiah17 You couldn't pay me to eat that.

nickbwalking,
@nickbwalking@zirk.us avatar

@fkamiah17 that looks like some 70s Plasticine ripoff that's now banned as a serious threat to life. So a pretty typical Southern "salad".

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@nickbwalking Yes! It does look like Play-Doh 😂
Definitely a "no nutrition intentionally provided" kinda dish.

Henrysbridge,

@fkamiah17

That looks extremely weird. I don't think I want to know what "whipped topping" is...🤢

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@Henrysbridge In the video it looked like Angel Delight with extra emulsifier 🤮

Barbramon1,
@Barbramon1@mas.to avatar

@Henrysbridge @fkamiah17 It's called Cool Whip in the US. Made of hydrogenated fat, high fructose corn syrup, and a bunch of milk by products and preservatives. 🤮

fkamiah17,

@researchbuzz Yeah, like a month too long 😂
Apparently you're supposed to add the "topping" then leave it in the fridge for 24 hours to make it "delicious" 🤢

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 What. Anything with marshmallows in it is not a salad. In fact unless it's hot chocolate, just don't.

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh I can't bear marshmallows in any context. I've seen so many American "salad recipes" that include jelly as well. Anyone would think they have free healthcare 😂

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 I mean do they use the word 'salad' to mean 'anything with more than one ingredient in it'? I mean, is trifle a salad?!

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh Who the fuck knows? I'd only approach it wearing a hazmat suit 😂
I've always liked the fact that Italians call trifle "zuppa Inglese" (English soup).

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 Oh I like that. English Soup ❤️

researchbuzz,

@lexicaleigh @fkamiah17 There's this period in American gastronomic history (ca 1950-1965) where we just completely lost our minds

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@researchbuzz @lexicaleigh Please don't try and convince me that this period was limited to 1950-65 - I've been to America 😁

researchbuzz,

@fkamiah17 @lexicaleigh My great-aunt ate pickled pig trotters until the day she died. You just fire away and I won't say a word. 😂

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@researchbuzz @lexicaleigh Oh, that generational shit is definitely not limited to the US. Some of the hideous garbage my grandparents were prepared to label as "foodstuffs" still gives me nightmares 🤣

lexicaleigh,

@fkamiah17 @researchbuzz Liver and onions. Tripe. TONGUE. 🤮

researchbuzz,

@lexicaleigh @fkamiah17 GIZZARDS. My mother used to fight her brother FOR THE GIZZARD.

(She's a vegetarian now lol)

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@researchbuzz @lexicaleigh Funny story about tripe: it was eaten fairly regularly in one of the places I lived in southern France. When I "expressed my displeasure" (dry heaved) at the prospect of eating it, the locals would tease me every time they saw me eating something "Watch out! There's tripe in that!"
Hilarity ensued. 🙄

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 @researchbuzz Oh no! Yes, don't they have some kind of vile "sausage" as well?

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh @researchbuzz Not that I remember - 99% of their local food is delish.
And tbf, we do have black pudding 😬

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@fkamiah17 @researchbuzz We do. My partner likes that, I can't stand it (either the concept or the actual taste).

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh @researchbuzz I've never bothered to eat it - the idea of what it's made from is enough to discount it as actual food in my book!

lexicaleigh,
@lexicaleigh@toot.wales avatar

@researchbuzz @fkamiah17 I'm not surprised! (That she's a veggie. I'm very surprised she fought her brother for the gizzards!)

Henrysbridge,
@Henrysbridge@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh @researchbuzz @fkamiah17

I think that's a mis-type? She fought her brother with the gizzard

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@Henrysbridge @lexicaleigh @researchbuzz Somehow that seems worse 😫

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@lexicaleigh @researchbuzz The one that haunts me the most, becuase it was the most regularly on offer, is fishpaste sandwiches.

"It was the French ex-President Jacques Chirac's favourite dish, so whenever he went near a restaurant, people would usher him in and sit him down for a plate of it."

Just keep a calf's head in the freezer in case the ex-President of France swings by

Jello "salads" remain very popular in American church culture (they are very popular with Mormons apparently).

Essentially they are things you can bring to the church potluck that require no cooking but are technically "homemade".

fkamiah17,
@fkamiah17@toot.wales avatar

@artemis @researchbuzz @lexicaleigh I love that "emptied out of tins and packets into a bowl" counts as "home made" 😂

@fkamiah17 @artemis @researchbuzz @lexicaleigh

I spent two years working at UMich 25 years ago. Mt partner did not have (another) job at the time with a young daughter.

But people were very welcoming. She had an invitation to a ‘spices’ event run by the ‘University Dames’. First event, coffee with a cookery demonstration. This involved opening and mixing different soups and then a jello salad. She came back in fits of laughter.
