Seriously heard someone saying they don't listen to many black artists, because they aren't really into rap. Bitch please, feel free to share songs from Black artists from any genre. Here is one of my favorites, if you like this song please check out her other work:

@RickiTarr I saw Bob Marley in this thread already, but let's take him back one more step ..to The Skatelites.

@RickiTarr It really is awful that "black music = rap" to a lot of people, but commercial radio is so tightly and blandly formatted these days that there are great artists of all colors in all genres that you're never going to hear unless you know where (and how) to look.

Radio and the music biz is yet another thing late-stage capitalism has ruined.

@RickiTarr I'm going outside the box (heh) and will make sweet, sweet, sticky love with Mrs Butterworth. The grandma act is a front, she's a total freak.

So, what's the thing, what's the big thing no one can help you with? How do you cope with it?

jimbush,
@jimbush@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr The realization that the people who raised me were either lying then, or have turned cold hearted as they aged.

And the way that their refusal to accept that our society must change, or we all will suffer, dooms all of us to an awful future. And I can't do a damn thing to stop that.

My coping methods are a daily SSRI and some alcohol every so often.

I thought I was done with graduation ceremonies for the time being, but my son is being recognized as the "Undergraduate's Favorite Staff Member" or some such for his School at Large State University this afternoon, so I guess I'm not.

Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

jimbush,
@jimbush@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr I live not too far from you, in Lawrence, Kansas. (Spent the first 50+ years of my life in the KC Suburbs.)

Pros:

Huge University town, with all the entertainment options and diversity that brings.

Reliably blue politics, although we've been gerrymandered into a bright red US House district.

A strong community culture that I never really found in the KC 'burbs.

Close enough to KC for major sporting events and big concerts.

We get all kind of weather!

Cons:

City government that can't get out of it's own way - good intentions, poor execution.

Entry-level housing prices are insane, because there is no step-up housing for sale. And plans for annexing land to make that happen move at a snails pace. Apartment rents are also high thanks to the whole college town thing.

Most of Kansas Politics.

The subset of townie culture that absolutely hates the University, and probably people like us who moved here as empty nesters.

We get all kinds of weather.

@RickiTarr It needs a Costco. And more grocery stores that are not Kroger-related. But I'm loving it!

jimbush,
@jimbush@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr Kroger is the lowest common denominator of grocery chains, sucking the joy out of all who shop there.

jimbush,
@jimbush@beige.party avatar

@RickiTarr It just struck me that I said "relatively close to you" when it's a 3-4 hour drive, depending on how close you live to 70 or 49.

Calling that "close" would make some European heads explode.

Listen kids, when two people love each other very much, one person will lay flat on their back while the other person does The Worm on them. This is how babies are made. Please do The Worm responsibly!

@RickiTarr There is a Dune joke about attracting The Worm in here somewhere, but my brain refuses to figure it out.

Welp, just crawled past 90K words (of a target 100K), and began the last chapter of the last Laundry Files novel.

And Bob has stopped semi-ironically asking "are we the baddies?" and (inadvertently) made it clear that the answer is—

@cstross I had to hop off the Laundry train a few books ago. It had just become too dark for me, given all of this (waves hands at world). But I look forward to finding out how Bob's story wraps up.

My wife is obsessed with the wifi-enabled birdfeeder + camera I gave her.

I have already reached my lifetime limit on viewing pictures of grackles. Nevermind the sparrows, finches, cowbirds, mourning doves, and the occasional cardinal. I didn't even know there was such a thing as a cowbird one month ago.

Help me.
