@RickiTarr i recently got mansplained about how latin used V instead of U, and that -- get this -- W is literally two U's. get it? double-U? yeah thanks 🙄 i was gonna snark but decided to just let it ride. (except that i just snarked here instead) 🙄
@RickiTarr
Point? In History? There are no points in history. History is fluid shapeless and without distinct points of departure in a continuum of interrelated and interdependent events... blah blah blah ;-}
@RickiTarr I've heard that one of the best ways to find out some esoteric knowledge is to post something on the subject that is wrong and wait for someone to correct you 😈
@edgeofeurope@aronow@RickiTarr Ugh, I'm reminded of the thread I read where the guy who occasionally had good points kept on insisting that people who have strongly Nazi-like beliefs aren't technically Nazis and it just derailed the entire thread.
@RickiTarr@justafrog@mentallyalex LOL that's us only in reverse. husband is up late and i'm the one going dude, is someone being wrong on the internet? god, so classic.
@timo21@RickiTarr We know that The Flintstones is not prehistoric, because the theme tune says they are “a page right out of history”. And yet it clearly predates the rest of recorded history, because, dinosaurs.
So the first event in recorded history was in season 1, episode 1, when Barney invented The Flintstone Flyer, then he and Fred used it to go to the bowling alley instead of the opera with Betty and Wilma.
@RickiTarr
Well, acshully, this is not new with the internet. Historians have been making shit up and arguing about since forever. Just happens faster now.
I'll admit, for years I really believed that the internet could be a great tool to break through the corporate created narratives and misinformation and that most people were generally thoughtful and intelligent and, if provided with good information, would come to accept the best ideas.
Yeah, so, in November of 2016 I was smacked over the head really hard with the reality that my beliefs about general human intelligence was severely flawed.
@1dalm I mean, to be fair that isn't a majority, our election system is just fucked up, and the media gives the most time to the most polarizing people
@1dalm I mean, we can look at the numbers, is it a larger amount of people than I'd like, most definitely!
And some people don't like the world, and are fine with watching it burn, and that's fine if you're a childless 20 something, but not if you're an adult with children or health problems, you can't necessarily do a violent revolution.
same here. i saw ricki's post right after some guy comes in with an all caps screed reply that has absolutely nothing to do with my top level post, threadjacking. i had to mute them

I'm now imagining the history of Folksplainin', & devoting spare cycles to sketching the plot of the Simpsons ep where Abe turns out to have been a Folksplainin' star, & then gets an opportunity at career revival.
