#SouthCarolina to use #CongressionalMap deemed #unconstitutional #SCOTUS heard arguments on the redistricting case in Oct but has yet to rule🤬, essentially running out the clock for the #2024election. A #federal#court ruled Thurs that time had run out to draw a new congressional district in #SC & said the state could use its existing map even though it had earlier determined that map was unconstitutional.
W/ no decision & the June 11 primary on the horizon, #SouthCarolina sought to use the map this yr even tho it had been deemed #unconstitutional. The panel unanimously agreed Thurs to keep the map in place for the #2024election.
It noted courts typically don’t allow maps to be used once found to be invalid. “But w/the primary election procedures rapidly approaching, the appeal before #SCOTUS still pending, & no remedial plan in place, the ideal must bend to the practical,” the judges wrote. #law
During arguments, a majority of the #SupremeCourt appeared inclined to reinstate the lines the state had wanted. 5 months later, the justices have yet to rule. Both sides had asked the justices to rule by Jan.
By hanging onto the case, #SCOTUS effectively allowed the clock to run out for the #2024election.

Right-wingers are rehashing the same discredited and debunked conspiracy claims about election fraud that they pushed ahead of the #2020election. It was baseless nonsense then, and it's baseless nonsense now. It's just their latest attempt to sow doubt about the security of our elections, and promote self-serving disinformation as we get closer to November.
