The rocky defile guarding the entrance to the ancient fortress of Dunadd, north of Lochgilphead in Argyll. Occupied from about 500 to about 900, this was once one of the most important places in what has since become Scotland. Crinan Harbour, at the north-west end of the 9-mile-long Crinan Canal in Argyll, the nautical shortcut from the Firth of Clyde to the Sound of Jura and the Hebrides.
