Taking a break 😴....
There might be delay to approve posts marked as spam.
I'll check everything regularly (maybe after every 5-6 hour).
Have a beautiful day 💛

PSA: It looks like mastodon.social has implemented hCAPTCHA on their signups yesterday.

So, if you have limited / suspended mastodon.social because of the spam issue, you may wish to reconsider this.

This will also likely mean that spammers will move to different instances (already seeing them targeting mastodon.world).

You may wish to consider implementing hCAPTCHA yourself to protect your own instance, and here is the relevant PR:

https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/25019

The reason I'm suggesting this, is because if you are a small/medium instance with open registrations, and spammers find and abuse your instance, I imagine that other instances will limit/suspend your instance without hesitation, given how willing some were to limit/suspend the much larger mastodon.social.

But do note this comment on the PR:

“To give some context to people seeing this: this is an emergency feature backport from Glitch SOC to help mitigating an ongoing spam wave, this feature may not make it in a next release, or with significative changes.”

Edited to add: multiple people have rightly commented on the accessibility concerns with hCaptcha: hCaptcha is really really really bad for blind and visually impaired people.

Please have a look at this excellent reply for more details:

es gibt wohl wieder ein bisschen "doge ai / arb" crypto account spam – diesmal von einer anderen instanz als mastodon.social

und erstmal waren es auch nur 6 offensichtliche spam accounts (die wir alle für hessen.social gesperrt haben)

Man. These recent spam bot incidents have really been keeping mods on their toes. Just look at Mastodon Social and Mastodon World. I just hope that the @mwadmin can clean up the mess. If you are a or a running a server that is compatible with the Mastodon API, I would advise closing signups during the night to prevent spam bots from taking over while your mod team is offline.

If you’re trying to fight DM spam and set mastodon.social as followers-only, we discovered that that doesn’t work. It downgrades privacy setting from Public/Unlisted to Followers-Only, but doesn’t affect DMs.

See this response from FloatingGhost about how to configure mrf_rejectnonpublic rule instead.

As instance I do NOT want to moderate DMs. The last three spam waves from mastodon.social however were sent as DMs.

I therefore urge @Gargron to make it the default that DMs can only be send between users that have a follow relationship.

The current default is that anyone can send anyone DMs. I consider this to be a loophole that spammers will continue to exploit, causing a lot of extra work for site admins in an area they should keep out of, in the interest of user privacy.

I seem to remember somebody wrote an article about the steps every "free speech" social media site goes through until they end up basically facebook....

Let’s face it. If these spam attacks were coming from a any other server, it was already banned by most servers permanently. But mastodon.social gets special treatment because of how big it has become.

Just added a new to this mastodon instance - No promoting/advertising cryptocurrencies (e.g. bitcoin, ethereum, etc).

I'm sick and tired of them, but most of all, I'm frustrated how they often prey on the financially weak to offer them a solution that not only will end up not being in their favour, but also ruining Earth as well.

Attention NixOrigians !

We are excited to announce that we have increased the storage limit per user to 50 GB! This means you now have even more space to upload and share your photos with the world.

If utilized fully it would cost us approx 0.55$ per month (per user).

We believe that this upgrade will greatly enhance your Pixelfed experience, and we can't wait to see all the amazing photos you will share with the world.

Thank you for being a part of the Pixelfed community and the great Fediverse !

Best regards,

Just used FediBuzz ( https://relay.fedi.buzz) to follow a few good tags/instances! I had a few other relays already, but the results have been mixed, with little relating to my own interests.

Here's hoping I get to see better stuff on my Federated timeline now, and also that I don't crash my own tiny instance with too much traffic.

Hey server admins!

Do you run a small server and you wish it had a wider view of the Fediverse, with more results from searches? You might want to try using relays:

If general relays take up too many resources, try using a more specific topic or instance relay feed from FediBuzz:

Given the direction I sense that Mastodon itself is going, I might just bight the bullet and initiate a clean slate protocol for my account here.
Time to see if there's any good alternatives then.

Dear NixOrigians,

We want to offer our sincere apologies for the recent downtime on our server. We understand that this incident may have been frustrating and disruptive to your experience on the platform, and we take full responsibility for the issue.

We would like to explain that the downtime was caused by high RAM usage as we were trying to refetch the remote avatars. We understand that this is not an excuse, and we are committed to taking the necessary steps to ensure that this does not happen again.

As some of my mutual followers know, I'm thinking about spinning up a instance for my , including my cousins and piblings. I want to ask the community (sorry if I'm misusing the hashtag) about whether or not should I create a special "admin" account for moderating the server and nothing else. Although that may be a few years away, I want to start asking questions like this, so I can have it planned out before I implement the server.

@noxblog wrote an excellent article about the recent moves made by Eugen and the Mastodon gGmbH and why treating other instances than mastodon.social as 2nd class is bad for the whole community.

I really recommend checking it out!

Looking forward to seeing their process. As we all know, our beloved fedi admins (hi @jerry) here do amazing work being fair while also blocking those that want to do harm.

For the record I'm not a huge fan of mastodon.social or the semi-centralization it leads to, or to @Gargron 's policies for it (or even stewardship of Mastodon sometimes), but let's not dogpile. Have some compassion. Put a limit on mastodon.social if you're an admin, and wait for the announcement that it is fixed. Then decide what to do next.
