So....I keep thinking about this Sharkey migration and as I see it, I have 2 options:
Attempt to re-migrate to beaware.live (my main domain) even though I briefly already had an instance there and risk potential federation issues.
Migrate to beaware.social (new domain) and redirect beaware.live to it which shouldn't cause issues.
In all honesty, if I could be almost positive I could do the first option with little or no federation issues, I'd rather go that route. BUT, if I can't get a definitive answer on if that would work or not, the second option is always there....any advice?
Does anyone have a very detailed and comprehensive guide on how to scale up a Mastodon server?
I'm pretty noobish to Linux but I can follow guides if they have commands and stuff. Though, the only guides I could find were very light on the commands for certain steps.
My Sidekiq has been getting backed up every now and then with thousands of jobs. Of course they eventually clear out but I'd like to just mitigate it by adding more processes or whatever because I'm not even using 50% of my server resources🤷♂️
Any help would be much appreciated.
PS. My server is currently backed up so if you reply to this, I probably won't see it for a bit.😬
Back when my naive self started Fedi, I went with the most known software (mastodon). But after months of dev incompetence, it's obviously not where I want to be, but I like my domain....
I guess I'm basically stuck with all these bad UI updates and no moderation features....😬🤦♂️
So....I want to migrate from Mastodon to Sharkey. The catch is, I would LIKE to end up back on my current domain....is this possible at all?
I have a domain I could park a Sharkey instance to migrate to, but if I make a new Sharkey instance on my current domain after I shut the Mastodon instance down, will I be able to migrate back with little issue?🤔
Fediadmins, are any of you seeing weird issues in your queues from lemmy instances?
lemmy.world was single handedly backing our incoming queue, as AP events would fail, and then be rescheduled to be re-tried again later. But then whilst waiting for them to re-try, more would come in.
We're seeing the behaviour from multiple lemmy instances, but lemmy.world is the biggest culprit, despite not being the most subscribed to instance by our users.
The activities in question are mostly votes, and Sharkey doesn't know what to do with them, so simply keeps retrying them until they fail
Does Mastodon have the same issue, or is it handling votes differently?
Admins, remember, it's YOUR decision if you decide to defederate, block or mute Threads on YOUR server, or if you choose to NOT do any of those.
There are many others out there that will try and force their opinion(s) down your throat as much as possible, but in the end, the server is YOUR SERVER, not theirs.
You run your server how YOU want, not how others would like for you to run your server.
Can an instance operator running a derivative of Misskey (Sharkey, firefish, or maybe even Misskey itself) get in touch with me? I can't seem to federate with that entire pie of the fediverse... 401 Unauthorized 😬
Alternateively, if you've run into this type of issue before, any tips? Heh.
One of the sessions yesterday at the #FediForum focused on CSAM, quite a tough topic.
If you host your own instance, even if it's just YOU on that instance, you need to read this and consider taking action to protect yourself and your moderation team.
Kudos to @thisismissem and @iftas for exploring new ways to manage this without scarring moderators for life.
Does anyone know how to reduce the amount of memory the Redis instance used by Sharkey uses?
It's hovering around 1gb right now and I suspect it's mostly due to the large amount of pending stuff in my deliver queue, and my resources are really limited since I don't have a proper income to upgrade my VPS #fediadmin
One of the things I'm trying to think through as a #FediAdmin is whether we want to federate with #Bluesky and #Threads. On one hand, it would be nice to be able to interface with people less familiar with the #Fediverse, on the other hand, I'm more wary of the way our instance data will be handled. #FediForum
Ugh, #Linode feels so expensive now for hosting our mastodon server, thinking a lot about just hosting it at home and having Linode host the object storage and front the reverse proxy. We have plenty of hardware and bandwidth (10Gb fiber) here. 🤔
I could also just downsize the linode probably but that would involve shrinking some file systems to fit within the reduced storage or migrating to a new Linode and ugh.
PSA for all Misskey admins:
Yesterday's 2024.3.0 update makes it impossible to react on Firefox for iOS because the reaction picker doesn't show (the UI still darkens though).
This does not happen with Safari on iOS and also not on Misskey 2024.2.0 so it seems to be a bug specifically in that combination. #misskey#fediadmin#misskeyadmin#firefox#ios
