10 Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could do With Nano Editor

OK, you probably do know at least one or two of these, but I’ve added the auto backup, line numbers, mouse support, and scroll bar to an alias for every time I start up nano.

See https://itsfoss.com/nano-tips-tricks/

@danie10

Not a huge fan, as I find that #Vim
is usually much faster for me, but I do use it in a pinch here and there, although I alias nano to #pico ;)

On #NetBSD, at least at #SDF, nano is still the default install from the U of Washington contribs (not pico).

The other half of that equation is #pine (alpine). When running #mutt, I do use nano over that of #vi for authoring my emails.

Thanks for sharing those #ProTip's Danie :)

This is a nice quick guide to render HTML emails into , and make it more or less automatic, including setting a preference for plaintext first, HTML fallback.

Lovely mutt. I should write up a quick guide or something about it, too, because I learn something new about it almost every other day. This should work as a nice documentation should I ever have to rebuild the config myself one day.

Allow me to introduce myself.

Hi! I'm Kelsi Lyn Star. I go by she/her pronouns.
Most people call me Star if they met me online. I used to go by xxbabygirlstar or xxSupernovaStar, so Star has always followed me somehow.
Other people call me Kelsi because they either know me IRL or they just wanted something more personal than a gamer tag.
Few people call me Kelsi Lyn.

My dog's name is Daxter. :kelsilHeart: :kelsilAngel: :kelsilParty: :kelsilPlead: He's a rescue I got at 8 weeks old. He's NINE YEARS OLD and I want to freeze him in time before he gets any older. He is my best friend. He is never very far from where I'm sitting... unless someone has food nearby. He's a melon. He's a too, but I do know he has some Australian Shepherd, Shetland Sheepdog, and Golden Retriever in him.

I'm 30. I'm currently, temporarily living with my parents in , following a pretty huge depressive spiral after losing my last job. Otherwise, I live in with my boyfriend of almost 3 years. Apparently I haven't lived there long enough to spell the state correctly yet, spell-check always corrects my dumb ass.

I love to love everyone. I'm a --basically, if I love you intimately enough, I wanna get in your pants... But my bf and I aren't poly, so sorry, I have to stay out of your pants. Bummer.

I vidya games on . (https://www.twitch.tv/kelsilynstar)
I have a schedule (Tues/Thurs/Sat) but I'm just getting back into it after being gone for 4 years, so everything is up in the air, subject to change. Right now, I'm limited to my on my temporary set up, but I do want to branch back out eventually. I swear a lot, and try to keep my community pretty chill and inclusive.

I'm & (, the shittier, sadder version with less mania) but on pretty reliable meds so I've been pretty damn balanced lately. I am all about talking about mental health and try to learn as much as I can.

And speaking of learning, I love to teach people things I've learned. My last job was a for Corsair, but my job got moved to California and I couldn't go with it. I spiraled hard after that because I really did love that job (even if it didn't always love me). But I will still be teaching people anything I know about, because that's just who I am as a person. I try to meet everyone where they're at and share new things with them in a way that makes sense.

I like to talk a lot, but I think I've rambled enough here. Hope to get to know more people, because I'm lonely as shit! No one is a stranger in my book, just people I haven't met yet. Come say hi, I don't bite... usually.

Quick! Mutt vs Neomutt -- which and why?

( blame @chuck )

kzimmermann,
@kzimmermann@fosstodon.org avatar

@mwl O.G. . It's the one I first tried, got to work, then kept for about 7 or so years now. I did try neomutt during this journey, but found out the config wasn't fully compatible then got lazy to reconfigure everything to match it.

I guess it's similar to my preference of vim over neovim.

My first #mua on *nix was #Elm on ~1993 (I think). In 1995 I moved to #Mutt and never changed. So I will turn 30 years of use next year. Wow!

If you're using with encryption, you need to read https://irreal.org/blog/?p=11827 by about the current issue with 2.4.1.

I noticed the bug myself already in . 😔

In this case, it's good to have still a Debian machine not running the latest versions.

publicvoit,
@publicvoit@graz.social avatar

@tzz @galdor @nickanderson I think I agree with the -only restriction.

However, in my case, I'm using my setup also for email workflows and file encryption outside of Emacs. With that, I do have some advantages when using only one encryption keyring from .

YMMV

If there would be an Emacs-specific alternative, I'd still switch to it I guess. (Depends on the implementation details.)

Been hearing whispers all weekend, some from people who I'd definitely listen to, of a remote execution 0day in the Signal desktop and possibly also mobile app. Mitigation is supposedly to disable link previews (under settings->chats).

I have no more details. What I've heard doesn't completely make sense, but disabling link previews should be at worst harmless and seems prudent until this is clarified.

@mattblaze This is why some people in the industry bend over backwards to treat all message formats as plain text and nothing else. for email, for , etc.

You can't really hack plain text.

Anybody running or a similar local MUA with an outbox/delayed sending mechanism?

In The Olden Days, I used to send emails and usenet posts on the full hour, making it easier to change my mind about things or edit emails before they went out, and I've been missing that ever since.

@kkarhan back in the uni times I used (or , I’m not sure) for accessing my university email account, then switched to . (Al)pine was not bad, but I tried it some time ago and had some problems in configuring. I always wanted to try so I tried the fork and for the moment I’m quite fine with it. Try a few then choose the one you feel more people will be comfortable with. really have a ton of options, and they may scare.
