My landlord installed a heatpump / electric combo water heater last month. It has a wifi connectivity feature that supposedly lets you schedule the water heater.
I was excited to be able to turn it off during peak times (4 to 9pm) and at night and set it to high efficiency mode when needed.
We all know that PG&E is a private utility company which participates in stock buyback, unjustified rate increases coupled with unrealistic compensations for their CEO.
I know they don’t have me best interest in mind yet I cannot opt out if them scheduling my water heater…
My only option is to turn off the IoT and delete the app.
Are appliance manufacturers are colluding with utility companies ?
So once again, as a tenant, I can’t do anything. My landlord probably got some tax deductions, and we’re stuck with either a dumb water heater or a collaborator spyware smart water heater…
At least it should theoretically be cheaper than gas but with the way the rates are increasing, I need to do the math
Don’t buy an #EcoTerra or at least download the #EcoNet app beforehand to see how shitty it is.
I am not expert in this topic, but it does seem like if we want to continue having the same quality of life with easy access to electricity, we really need to work on putting our power lines underground. This has been an issue in #California both because of fires, and severe storms in the last few years. The utility companies really don't seem to recognize the urgency of getting this done.
Just got a power outage notification from #PGE - which is sort of puzzling since I'm online typing into my computer right now and I don't have backup power...
Yay! Power came back on around 10:30 pm. Either 31 hours (per #PGE) or 27 hours (from when the lights actually went out) without power. Low indoor temperature noted was 45F, although the floor was likely 43F or thereabouts. Cold air falls.
Going back to @stevesplace at mastodon.stevesworld.co unless the power glitches again, in which case I'll do the dance of the Terminator. I'll be back.
#PGE says the power went out at 3:27 pm yesterday and have not dispatched anyone, have not determined a cause and as of right now have no estimate for when power might be restored. Despite additional crews from out of state, they are woefully short of what they need to service this area due to the storm. Oh joy.
The amount of money #PGE spends advertising what a great job they're doing hardening their infrastructure... how about they just put that ad money into hardening their infrastructure instead? Chaps my hide. #appearancebeforeaction
We're honored #ABC10 received the national Edward R. Murrow award for Investigative Reporting.
This was for our #FirePowerMoney story revealing that Gov. Newsom had hired PG&E's longtime law firm to draft legislation bailing the company out of its own #wildfire damage.
