I love the end of this story about yesterday's power outage caused by a beaver:

More important still, Gutierrez confirmed that “the beaver was okay.”

Nine Succumb to Heat-Related Incidents in ; Temperatures to Cross 50°C in Many Rajasthani Districts

While a large number of these heat-related deaths took place amidst the searing outdoors, a frequent nuisance in these areas continues to aggravate the heat problem indoors as well. According to reports, at least 16 areas of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have recorded maximum temperatures of 45°C or above on Thursday. "

We had a transformer blow down the street from us. I was supposed to be working until 9:30, but instead I’m sitting in the dark with the cat.

Kind of peaceful, actually.

We skated easily through 16+ hours of the SF Bay Area power outages thanks to 2 new Tesla Powerwall batteries. Here's what we experienced, including a software glitch that freaked me out just as the outage hit. I started nervous about capacity & usage but mellowed out.

Big wind-triggered power outages in SF Bay Area hit our house. Months-long Tesla Powerwall installation process finished 2 weeks ago, just in time! Alarming blip: for 20 minutes, Tesla app said battery is "critically low." Now fixed and 24+ hours of power (I still unplugged stuff). See screenshots for details.

Screenshots showing Tesla app problem during a power outage: initial views show incorrect power generation and consumption information, including spurious "critically low" charge state and less than 1 hour of charge remaining. Eventually the correct data fed into the system and 24 hours of charge showed.

There's currently a power outage in central Toronto along the Yonge corridor, one of Canada's most densely populated areas. A modest physical footprint that impacts tens of thousands of people.

And in the most Toronto way ever it was a result of a raccoon and to top that off, Steamworks, in the Village has power and is offering up hot showers. It's perfect.

I hope everyone is safe and able to check in on your neighbours as power is out for thousands of residents — including my family and I. Toronto Hydro’s website — which is linked to via www.kristyn.ca/hydro will have updates. They are on site and working to restore power. I will share more updates as I learn more in future newsletters (signup at the link in my bio).

There's been a lot of buzz about California's next storm system, and while I'll occasionally share my thoughts based on operational and research experience, remember to rely on your local Weather Service and Emergency Management offices for local updates.

It's important to remember that conditions can change rapidly. Stay vigilant and be prepared for power outages. Have flashlights, candles, and a battery-powered radio on hand to stay connected during potential blackouts.

Saw this Xfinity generator to power some neighborhood internet service provider hardware today and started fretting that maybe today's storm is going to be worse than I thought. So far not too windy, though, which is the big power outage risk around here.

PG&E wisely has revamped its power outage info page to start with a very low-bandwidth experience. I like the map but when we had massive outages recently, it loaded very, very slowly over suddenly overtaxed mobile networks. https://pgealerts.alerts.pge.com/

Prior to yesterday's Emergency Alert re rolling power blackouts in Alberta and today's revelation that at least 7 power plants were offline at the time, I'm guessing most of us did not know that electricity generators are allowed to hold back electricity power from the Alberta Electric System Operator in order to obtain a higher price.

Tips on staying safe in Winter Conditions and when the power goes out, from the National Weather Service.

If Your Heat Goes Out

  • Close off unneeded rooms to avoid wasting heat.
  • Stuff towels or rags in cracks under doors.
  • Close blinds or curtains to keep in some heat.
  • Eat and drink. Food provides the body with energy for producing its own heat. Drinks lots of water and other non-caffeinated, non-alcholohic drinks to prevent dehydration. Cold air is very dry.
  • Wear layers of loose-fitting, lightweight, warm clothing. Remove layers to avoid overheating, perspiration and subsequent chill.
