Academic associations: when you are looking for graduate students to do work for a conference, perhaps don't offer an honorarium equivalent to less than minimum wage in 12 out of 13 provinces and territories.
That's not even counting the unknown (uncompensated?) time for the mandatory orientation session.
I am excited to share that I submitted my PhD thesis, "The Construction of Values by Social Media Platforms," over the weekend! Big shout out to my ineffable advisor @limor_shifman, my wonderful mentor @blakeplease the DigitalValues fam, and my great PhD committee for your guidance & support along the way 💖
I have many more people to thank, including friends and family. Expect my acknowledgments to be 🧀 🧀 #PhDsubmitted#PhDchat
Good morning! Rainy and chilly here, just 6°C with a predicted high of 8°C - not very spring-like. This morning I will be working on some key documents for my main research study, then in the afternoon I have a workshop on getting the most out of progress reviews (my 1st one is coming up). Before all of that I have to honour Miss Cinnamon’s request for a snuggle. She’s dozed off lying on my torso with her face in my armpit #PhD#phdchat#cats
Of course supervision was fine, in fact better than fine, it was great, she told me ahead of my formal six month review that I have ticked all the boxes so far and we made some exciting plans for the next six months. The time is going really quickly… #PhD#phdchat#phdlife
OK so what I WANT to write about (and may do in a separate paper) is this infantilising way women with a BPD Dx are treated as “silly girls”. Silly for self-harming, silly for complaining about services, silly for ODing, silly for taking “sexual risks”. They are not toddlers.
I think this whole #PhD is going to involve me doing my “proper” work and writing other articles on the side #PhDChat
My abstract for a poster presentation at this year’s main “personality disorder” conference has been accepted! This will be my first conference of my PhD outside of my own university. My department has conference poster printing facilities, I need to find out how to access them 🤔 #PhD#phdchat
I had such a lovely morning working up a focus group schedule and mapping it to my research questions. I really enjoy this sort of thing - especially when I have a lovely new notebook and coloured pens for mind mapping! #PhD#phdchat#phdlife
One more full text paper to screen for inclusion in my literature review! Then it’s on to data extraction which is a mystery to me, so I’ll have to watch a webinar from the software company to find out what the software will do next #PhDs#PhdLife#PhDChat
What is the best way, platform or tool for an early stage researcher that wants a personal site to link repositories, show a cv, but also blog about papers and ideas informally?
Starting Monday, I will no longer be a Postdoc Fellow at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
I will be a SCIENTIST.

Dear Shawn Jones,
We are pleased to offer you the position of Scientist 2 in the Information Sciences Group (CCS-3). This represents a conversion of your student/postdoc appointment.

Morning. I’m really struggling to get up lately, no matter how much sleep I get I feel a desperate need for more. I actually could cry, I feel so tired. But I’m here, dressed and breakfasted and ready to start the work day. Excited to write about the history of zines today, especially as people use them as a grassroots form of expression and activism about mental health issues. How about you? Are you wide awake or on the verge of exhausted tears? #PhD#phdchat
(This will be a very long list by the end of the year if I keep it up. We'll see.)
Your statements are basically done after the first few deadlines. I always thought I'd customize extensively for each school.
Nope.
On a week like this (with so many apps due Sep 15), you just don't have time. You have to trust that you already put in the work with your base template. It's a mental shift from fellowship apps.
An offer is great, but then you have a decision to make. Fast.
And I gather that it's not uncommon to have to make that decision before you hear about other options.
Generally, I try not to post about a stage (i.e., job talk) until a few weeks after I've experienced it. Time to process and such. But this one is in real-time. And boy it's tough.
