Spring Break for me and we're off to Reno, Nevada. People at work were surprised because they know I don't gamble. My wife does, however. I'm looking forward to reading, playing my Switch, and visiting Reno's lone comic shop.

Hadn't peeked at for a bit. Have been a few things – I should load a few recent designs to share.

Beyond likes, download stats etc, a rewarding thing is where ppl take post a pic to show they're making good use of your work.

My little painting pyramid, lets you paint both sides of a thing and let it dry w minimal marking up of the wet side. Lots of versions of such things – mine has a few minor innovations.

Thx to Fredrik who printed LOTS of them. Fun!

Racing Balloons

I'm not exactly sure why they call the Reno Balloon Race a race at all. It seemed that nobody was in a real hurry to get off the ground. Once off the ground I didn't see anyway to race these things or a course to race on. It seemed as if they were just floating up and down and around, looking for different currents to float on.

Strolled around Virginia Lake in Reno, and did a little bit of birding. Spotted 10 species per my eBird checklist. Here's a few of the pictures I took.

Two Canada Geese are in the green tinted lake. One on the right is just swimming while the one on the left has lifted up out of the water to beat their wings rapidly. The dark brown wings are up and back, with the forward edge of the wing is curled forward. The bird's pale chest and black and white head are brightly lit from the sunlight.
Three Northern Shovelers swim out towards the center of the dark grey lake, the water rippling out from them. The lead bird is a female, her dark brown and black body dull compared to the two males following her. Their bright rusty brown sides are edged by white patches near the chest and tail, while their black and white striped wings lie against their back. They are at the wrong angle so their green heads don't show as bright as they could, but the yellow eye is still prominent against the dark head.
A mountain chickadee peers around the hanging green branch of a juniper tree as it perches on the rough brown bark of a branch. The bird's dark black chest and head stripes stand out clearly from the light grey and white body that is partially hidden.

Balloons In The Desert

Balloons In The Desert was captured early in the morning with low late summer light. This lighting made the balloon colors pop or stand out against the clear blue sky. The other thing I like about the quality of light here is that it has brought out the desert background and blended nicely with the yellows/golds on the balloons.

Reno Balloon Races

The Reno Balloon Race is the largest free hot air ballooning event in the world. This takes place every year in September.
Starting at 7;00 am is the start of the mass ascension. This is where all of the balloons start inflating and lift off when ready to go. This is a capture of the balloons inflating prior to lift off. No good by the way.

are devastating the region in right now.
After 2 years of extreme drought, this May we had not a single week without rain. In particular, rain is falling continuously for about 2 o 3 days now (almost 200mm of rain in 48 hours).

The result is 14 overflown rivers
6 people died
thousands of evacuees
shitload of euros of damage

The river, the main one of the region, didn't overflow yet but water level is dangerously high.
Of course my house is right next its banks but luckily they have been recently raised so maybe hopefully we'll be ok.

This situation resembles a lot the 2021 floods in Western Europe.
So I guess this shit is just routine by now. At lest I hope this events can raise attention about environment management, since this stuff happens at various degrees of seriousness yearly but still water basins management is just LOL

Oh, WOW, a lifer!--it's a pterosaur, perhaps a Pterodactylus antiquus?...um, wait, sorry, it's just a common Ardea herodias (great blue heron), rats!

I have to say, when I see them flying from a distance it's the first thing I think of: that's probably what a pterosaur looked like in the air. Sandhill cranes make me think that as well. (Photo: Lake Park, Reno, Nevada, 2020.)
