Oh my, how I love to see these numbers of the aurora borealis forecast. I really really hope it will happen, even though the nights are too bright now the high nummer on saturday might be visible if it gets that strong. And a big chance it could be seen as far south as half Eurorope where it is dark enough if it happens late enough in the evening.

@ambivalena Good luck! I'm bummed. I thought I'd have my car fixed by tomorrow, but the replacement axle that arrived today was damaged. Ugh. :( So I'm stuck at home and can't get north of town, up to Pyramid Lake to look for auroras! Saturday morning. Looks like a good 1-2-3 punch is going to hit us! https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/wsa-enlil-solar-wind-prediction

I am talking o a reporter about this in a couple hours: https://regina.ctvnews.ca/from-outer-space-sask-farmers-baffled-after-discovering-strange-wreckage-in-field-1.6880353

This is about an hour away from my farm, so this'll be a fun conversation, and yet another great opportunity to tell a lot of people about what a huge problem we have with unregulated commercialization of orbit. (Also I just redid my slides for my public talk next week, this is going in!)

@sundogplanets Besides the long odds of a piece of space junk actually hitting someone, isn't it a hazardous waste concern with people (and kids) finding and handling fallen rocket and satellite debris? Handling that shredded carbon fiber and then sticking a finger in your eye is a problem, I'd think? And then there's all sorts of other hazardous chemicals people could potentially be exposed to.

A Pine-troll on the run at dusk.'

I can´t help but wonder what they are up to at night.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena I never heard of a pine troll, but it looks like something to avoid! Beautiful clouds!

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena I actually find the creatures in the cities scary. In the woods, I'm as comfy as a vættr when there aren't any pesky humans around.

The sun has been pretty active. Any auroras or has it been cloudy?

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena When I was young I was scared of the dark. But after leaving the city and living in the woods for a time, in what was supposedly Bigfoot country (lol!), I got over it. I love to hike alone at night now.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena Well, I didn't exactly see a Bigfoot but I do have a Bigfoot story! A Bigfoot was first reported in the area of Willow Creek, California (NE Humboldt County). That's about 500km north of San Francisco just west of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest.

In the late '70s I lived in Humboldt Co, California. One year I attended a Humboldt Co History class at the local college. The instructor was historian Andrew Genzoli, a retired reporter & columnist for the Eureka Times-Standard. 1/3

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena In October, 1958, Genzoli published the article "Giant footprints puzzle residents along Trinity River," where he first coined the term "Bigfoot." In the style of the wild west sagebrush school literary movement of tall tales & hoaxes, popularized by Mark Twain, Genzoli wrote the article and many followup articles. They sold papers, and the wires carried the stories worldwide. And that's the birth of the legend of Bigfoot. 2/3

@ambivalena Here's a little more about Bigfoot and Genzoli: "The legend of Bigfoot started in Humboldt County": https://www.record-bee.com/2017/04/28/the-legend-of-bigfoot-started-in-humboldt-county/

Addendum: Legendary anthropologist, Jane Goodall, has stated that she believes Bigfoot exists. But she caveats that statement by saying she is also a romantic--and wants to believe. (Source: Science Friday with Ira Flatow, September 27, 2002.) 3/3

@ambivalena Here's something spooky. I have to admit, I had to focus on doing photography while--in the middle of the night--I was in this remote kiva that I backpacked out to. It kind of gave me the heebie-jeebies being in there. There was no body else around for many kms. It's uncertain what prehistoric Puebloans used kivas for, but modern Hopi use them for religious purposes. The waterfall like streaks on either side of the ladder in the underground photo is 800 years of pack rat urine!

Night photo looking out from a cliff dwelling. A cliff dwelling is like a shallow cave. It's night and the large eye shaped opening shows a starry sky with the bright milky way in the far right corner. In the right foreground is an opening in the ground with two rungs of a ladder made of tree limbs protruding. There is light coming from the hole in the ground as if there we people below with a fire burning. A short rock wall borders the area on the right with the opening in the ground.
A night photo shows the inside of a cliff dwelling area that is like a shallow cave. In the back of the area are two square structures made of flat brick like stones. There's one of the far left and one in the middle. Both have square door like openings from which light is coming out as if someone were inside with a fire burning. In the middle ground on the right two rungs of a ladder made of tree limbs protrudes from a square opening in the ground. Light also comes out of the opening as if there were a fire inside. A short rock wall borders the area where the ladder rungs are seen.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena Yes, one year I spent time going out to some of the old cliff-dwellings with glow sticks to make an effect like they were occupied. I need to try it again. I used a flash as well but it was too much and looks unnatural in those last photos. This, I think, was the best of the series. Still would like to redo them sometime.

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@edgren @ambivalena A fire would be more authentic but I'm sure the government land managers would love to throw me in jail for such an act of vandalism. Interestingly, however, The US Nat. Pk. Service does use luminarias to light the big ruin at Mesa Verde Nat. Pk. once a year. It looks very cool! >>> https://www.chriseatonphotography.com/photo/cliff-palace-luminaria/

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena @edgren Oh no, I'd never ever do that. I'm a big supporter of the "Visit With Respect" mandate of the Bears Ears Partnership: https://bearsearspartnership.org/visit-with-respect

elaterite,
@elaterite@fosstodon.org avatar

@ambivalena @edgren I figured you were, but I thought I'd use the opportunity to post the "Visit With Respect" link. Perhaps lurkers out there might click on it and learn something! That's my goal moving to Bluff, Utah (where I just was on my roadtrip), if I can figure out how to deal with the increase in healthcare costs, is to volunteer at the Bears Ears Education Center.

Here's a brilliant neologism: "slop", for text generated entirely by LLMs and published, unwanted, on the Internet

> Watching in real time as "slop" becomes a term of art. the way that "spam" became the term for unwanted emails, "slop" is going in the dictionary as the term for unwanted AI generated content
