Unemployment is rising in the UK at the fastest pace among 38 of the world’s richest countries, according to an analysis by the Trades Union Congress (TUC).
Between the start of January and the end of March, every region of the UK was affected by rising unemployment and a falling number of job vacancies.
Forcing people into a decreasing number of jobs, or their benefits will be cut is no way to solve this.
A new report from the Institute for Government (IfG) says it is not plausible for the victorious party on 4 July to stick to current spending plans at a time when the performance of hospitals is arguably the worst in the history of the NHS, prisons are at crisis point, and councils are shutting libraries and cutting back on waste collection and social care.
Housing journalist Peter Apps writes about how the Tories held down housing benefit rates which sent homelessness soaring and led to an exodus of poorer people from our cities.
So as I was cycling along trying to avoid the many #potholes and road craters I wondered how many could have been be fixed with the £29m dodgy Michelle Mone made out of us for the dodgy PPE. The answer is c1/2m potholes - which would be HALF the potholes in the UK 😡 #ToryCorruption#ToryBritain#TorySewageParty
The DWP strike again. It is worth reading the full article, and imho the behaviour of the judge was reprehensible and the DWP unpardonable. But that do they care? One clear result, at east one life irreparably damaged and additional support costs incurred by DWP actions.
They used to depport people for stealing bread when they were starving. we haven't progressed much thanks to the theiving, stinkingly corrupt tory government.
Billionaire foundations are helping to fund local news outlets, but it is nowhere near enough, and there is always the worry at these places of stepping on their toes. And recently, the LA Times slashed 20% of its workforce after its billionaire owner had pledged to stay the course through good times and bad. Given the serious market failures here, it is time for public funding of news outlets, especially in news deserts where there is no local paper. https://www.amjamboafrica.com/saving-the-news-media-means-moving-beyond-the-benevolence-of-billionaires/
Billionaires own 95% of the UK press, not because they believe in accountability or free speech, but because they want to control the government, so they can get nice tax breaks.
Most of their shitty tabloids lose money, but they still get their tax breaks.
The personal cost of UK immigration policy. By more than doubling the earnings threshold for spouses and partners to well over median salary, the government has ensured that many skilled professionals won’t be able to come to the UK. #ToryBritainhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-67630258
Poverty levels in the UK are “simply not acceptable” and the government is violating international law, the United Nations’ poverty envoy, Olivier de Schutter, has said ahead of a visit to the UK this week.
"It’s simply not acceptable that we have more than a fifth of the population in a rich country such as the UK at risk of poverty today”
Of course, the Tories will take this as a sign their policies are working.
"Political monsters do not arise from nowhere: they are built, brick by brick, in a collective effort. Whether Braverman herself is the next Tory leader or not, Bravermanism is the future of the British right"
Starting to realize, with good reason, that - emphatically and empirically - being permanently sloshed is the way to survive the dystopian post-apocalyptic hellscape that is Tory Britain. Unfortunately it requires a genetically modified liver, so back to plan Z. #ToryBritain#ToryHellscape#Sunackered#inLizWeTruss#nhs#climatecrisis
BBC News: Rishi Sunak considering weakening key green policies
According to multiple sources briefed on Downing Street's thinking, Mr Sunak would use the speech to hail the UK as a world leader on net zero… he would also argue that Britain has over-delivered on confronting climate change and that other countries need to do more to pull their weight.
"In Scotland, where the government has limited rises for sitting tenants to 3 per cent, rents on newly-let properties jumped a record 13 per cent year on year, Hamptons said, as landlords tried to capture as much rental uplift as possible in between tenancies."
The FT article also mentions 5 UK whips holding up Westminster rent reforms because they are landlords. The Mirror named them today, I'll stick that in the replies.
Since moving to Ireland a few weeks ago I find myself a lot less interested in British politics. It’s like having an annoying, attention-seeking neighbour. You can only marvel at their ability to make life difficult for themselves. 🙄 #ToryBritain
