BREAKING: Direct file is a success!

90% gave a positive review, and it delivered over $90 million in refunds.

It’s clear that Americans want an easy and free way to file their taxes directly with the IRS - without paying junk fees.

why is it that takes like a good 70% of your tax return as payment for there services? like, I was supposed to get 424 bucks in my return, but nope, because I went with Turbotax, I am only getting $191 back from my return because I had to pay for there services.

my biggest complaint about AI is we didn’t ask for it. zero popular movements took to the streets to demand AI. no one sat around kitchen tables lamenting how hard life is without AI.

what people want is health care, housing, climate change solutions, etc We sit around kitchen tables wondering how to pay for college, get loved ones the psych and addiction support they need, or help the people on our streets who need homes

zrb,
@zrb@astrodon.social avatar

@cairobraga @mike805 @seachanger However, U.S. tax law is so intentionally esoteric (specifically so that rich people don't have to pay taxes) that many people don't feel confident enough to fill out and submit Form 1040 themselves.

It also doesn't help that tax-preparation services, such as and , spend significant amounts of money to openly politicians and civil servants in order to keep the tax code complicated.

I am not promoter of the NYTimes in general, but this opinion video they just put out about filing is on point.

Let this serve as my annual reminder that is not your friend and that is a scam. The US tax filing system is broken and we should not be playing guessing games with the IRS every tax season.

When it comes to prep, public funds are being spent to undermine the expenditure of other public funds. Guess who the losers are?

But in America, taxpayers spend billions every year to send forms to the that tell it things it already knows. To make this ripoff seem fair, the hyper-concentrated tax-prep industry, led by the Intuit, creators of , pretended to create a program to provide free tax-prep to working people.

This program was called , and it was a scam.
