Last lecture of the quarter tonight and I’m beat. Being a Prof is my second job and an Intro #SWE classes done well are hard, but also so rewarding.
#UCSD CSE 110 students this quarter learned local first platform focused #webdev with appropriate agile team practices, wrote ADRs, practiced UCD, deployed CI/CD, and much much more. I think I broke many of them of code primacy and a wait for the ticket or spec accountability.
Tl;dr - go hire these folks you’ve got lots to work with!
The Regents created #UCSD so #sandiego#defense company General Dynamics could recruit PhDs who wouldn't come to a place without a university nearby. And they only had to donate a million to make it happen.
"he petitioned the regents to change the oceanography thing down there in San Diego... to a campus of the University of California, and if we would do that, they—General Dynamics—would contribute a million dollars..."
"Last month, the University of California at San Diego announced a new graduation requirement: a #ClimateChange course."
Makes sense.
Knowing about climate change is a survival skill.
At MIT, a demonstrated ability to swim is a graduation requirement; climate knowledge is a long term, broader version of that, benefiting more people.
An unexpected benefit of having an Activity Pub focused open ended project for my SE class is I get test follows.
Hi👋 everybody from #Ucsd CSE. Have fun exploring the #Fedi. #Mastodon is just part of it.
If folks have suggestions requests for some CS Graduate student teams to build something for the Fedi as a class project reply below. They’ll see it or I’ll bring it to class for sure.
Went to the Tutor reunion for #UCSD CSE Dept & a retirement party for a fellow Prof. The amazing part was reconnecting with many former students, hearing about their many successes and very much loving hearing about application of #webdev standards and PE thinking. One is maintaing a design system at a big company, another writing web components at a bank, #a11y mentioned by another as a big win.
Teach the platform. Students will thrive & will appreciate it… at least eventually😏
Ok so I went to campus to support some students graduating and some of my students learned well … very well. The student is now the master. Also he isn’t Darth… he’s Ryan.
