While not clear to see them in the video, we found out they were Black Swallowtail - Papilio polyxenes, found around Nova Scotia

As we returned from , we saw a , right beside that Coast Guard ship. It closed the highway,

I recorded this waiting on Firetrucks

A massive fire at the end of the Marie Joseph wharf. It fills the sky with thick black smoke, that only the glow in the center can pass through. To the left, not touched by the fire, is a partly scrapped Coast Guard vessel, there for 10 years.

Now, as mentioned in that fire, this is a fishing community. Look how picturesque it is before sunset?

Without power, when the roads were cleared of trees, we went to call and let everyone know we were OK (Remember?)

I believe Fancy's Beach gets a Cellular signal.
Check when you go?

A ball of yellow,l dropping out of sight, with a red dome shaped glow above it, The sunset taken from the Marie-Joseph Provincial Park, so small, you'd miss it, before the sharp corner. There's cellular signal there. Stay to watch the sun go down

If you've never driven the # 7 highway, longest highway in Halifax, it's the scenic drive.

It runs from Bedford to Antigonish, along the Eastern Shore for a distance of 269 kilometres (167 mi).

We'll be just past the Municipality line, about 10kms into Municipality

The fishing community of , sheltered at the mouth of Hawbolt Cove, just past the Provincial Park

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

There's an interesting bypass road, that mostly only the local know about. It skips the loop around leading into the center of Marie-Joseph, and saves a little distance or congestion.
Shown here is Short Cut Road, which re-enters #7 highway, ~ across from "Fancy Point Rd" If you're driving a nice car or truck, PARK near Bakers Cove Rd and hike in. It's a rough ride.

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

In the 1960s, Highways NS maintained the road, you could drive a Fiero car to the beach. I've broken brake and power steering lines on my truck on this road. At the beach end, the tide crosses the road, fills the lake, and spills back into the ocean when the tide drops> The current nearly pushed my truck off the road. CHECK TIDE TIMES!

The view is spectacular, rock berms into the ocean, back into Smith Cove, and to the (now right) the lake called "Fancy's Pond".
Rock berm beach is piled high, and from the ocean, it peaks, and falls back sharply into the Pond, behind the beach.

THIS IS NOT A SANDY BEACH.
Banked Rocks are Melon-sized

Darker view, due to the sun, showing more rows of stone shoals into Smith Cove
From higher, the same view of Smith Cove, across the rock bars, or berms, that are visible like lines, spaced evenly for at last 3 shown

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

It's hard walking on these rocks. Locals use 4x4s or ATVs to ride the peak of the berm.
YES that is my Van nearly buried in the rocks. Long story (we're locals), we've done it many times, but strongly recommend you stop before here, perhaps at one of the two cemeteries you pass, coming in Fancy's Road.
Marie-Joseph community was founded in 1749, and built a church on this road, about same time.

From the road at Fancy's Pond side, a massive wall of stones, rises up to the peak, and drops sharply downward on the other side, to the waves of the Atlantic ocean
Looking the other way, difficult to see, in the massive pile of rocks, is the roof of my van. It is only FWD but I made it up to the hill of the beach. Some trees to the right and the ocean is just over that big hill of stones

Back to the beach
The powerful sea here, full of strong undertow, is always noisy with breakers, and rolling back surf with undertow. It's hard to believe we once swam here in the 1960s as kids? We knew the danger, and found a safe spot.

The massive storm waves, have pushed driftwood and bits of everything to the very top of the rock mountain of beach. (locals use the wood for bonfires)

Looking NORTH, a slight track of compressed stones, buy 4x4 or ATVs across the top, to the left of bleached white wood, tree stumps, limbs, driftwood, stuck in the rocks
Looking North from Fancy's Pond (lake) on the bottom left, to show the height and direction of the North crescent of the beach.
Looking north from the top of the berm the crescent beach rolls along to a treeline, just a kilometer or so long (from here)

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

We continued along the beach to the end, fully exploring side-trails, deer trails, and possible other routes to get here. This is the only way. I've gone to the end, and I've come back from Liscomb area and you can't get here any other way but the road we came in on.
Half-way down, we found a burning area, where beer cans indicate Weekend bonfires and partying by locals. We took their cans with us

Looking to the East side of the rock wall, is another view of Fancy's Pond, about the size of a small lake. the round melon size rocks roll right down into the pond from our high perch
Fancy's pond from further north
Looking North-east, over the rock peak, to another distant cliff wall and continued shoreline. rocks are not all you'll find that far along, some sandy beaches about another few kilometers from this beach

Rasta,
@Rasta@mstdn.ca avatar

I never showed you the Surf yet? It's pretty calm today, you could get sprayed with surf, on a windy day. How do you think all that wood and rock got piled so high? The power of the ocean.

I recommend you PAUSE HERE, for some time.
Seals often come right up to the shore, to watch you, and you can watch them. I'll find you a video later. They don't always like my camera in their face 😉

Another view (to your right from the top) of the South facing beach crescent
Another view of the North facing crescent of the beach, the ocean gently rolls onto the rocky shore

Going out, with tide dropped, we see the Pond side, and the orange tide mark it left at low tide.
That's how much the pond rises with the tide,and flows back out, across the road. REMEMBER THE TIDE TIMES? You should, if you're planning on returning today.
It's not just rocks on the beach. Watch for Plant Life, surviving harsh conditions

I'm running out of time, I'll add some videos quickly now

Wild peas, often found on islands, and good to eat, hearty and grow on rocks alone
Looks like coltsfoot or similar hearty flowering weed, in a yellow bunch between just rocks, no soil
Wild purple iris flowers, dotted along marsh grasses on or near the beach and road coming to the beach

Rasta,

I hope you enjoyed my story? It's short, due to time restraints today. If you'd like more detail, I'll add some at a later date.
STOP AND SMELL THE SEA , and watch the surf, talk to the seals, and make it worth your visit.
Take lots of photos and for other Hikers, and adventure seekers. I've done all of Nova Scotia like this, one adventure at a time.

Well, here's your chance. The water is deep where the rocks tumble into the ocean, the seals can get very close with enough depth to bounce around watching, watching them.
