Magic: The Gathering has come a long way since it debuted at Gen Con in 1993. Last year, it became a billion-dollar brand. The genius behind it, mathematician Richard Garfield, left Wizards of the Coast, Magic's publisher, shortly after it was sold to Hasbro in 1999 and has subsequently expressed an apparent disillusionment with what the game has become. Defector's Nick Zarzycki interviewed him about this, his perception of the existential threats to Magic, and why he left the company. [Story may be paywalled]
Played some Bohnanza Dahlias tonight! Lost to the 14yo, who is a shark at negotiating exchanges. So glad they re-themed Bohnanza - such a great game & the Dahlias cards are so pretty (art by Beth Sobel!). #BoardGames#CardGames
I am too exhausted from work to do anything terribly taxing. So I've been re-cataloguing the things I'd like to knit. Some #knitting patterns have been bookmarked for more than 10 years. I don't know if I'll ever make them. In #CardGames , I know Team Covenant talk about "the game outside the game": researching sorting, dreaming about cards. There is a pleasure in these activities, even if they don't look productive from the outside
Played a two player round of Clank! yesterday. If you need more board game in your deckbuilding game, well here you go. Venturing deep into the dungeon & scrambling to get out alive with treasure is no simple task!
The game mechanics are straightforward & logically designed, there's just a lot to keep track of. Setup/teardown is also a fairly involved process. Make sure you understand all the rules before playing, it's worth the effort. Recommended!
I reflect on that time in high school my English teacher let me run the (awful) nuclear war card game I designed...and consider the lessons I learned all those years ago
I knew Balatro was addicting, but not that addicting that I went to bed several hours after midnight. 😬
Bought this game on the day of its release. I had played its demo during the latest Next Fest and decided that, yes, I very much would like to continue playing it and that the 10% discount on release was good enough!
It’s a great local convention for all sorts of gaming, they’re on the rebuild post-covid, but it’s always been a great event, lots of fun. Give it a shot! February 22-25th. #NJ#NewJersey#games#gameconvention
Played a 1v1 round of #Dominion this afternoon! While not my first deckbuilding game, I've had a lot of fun with the versatile market setup on here lately.
I have the big box that comes bundled with the Intrigue expansion, but so far the base cards have been enough to create some enjoyable back and forth games.
Do you play Dominion? What are your favorite Kingdom card combos to use? We went for a simple layout today, something more interactive might be fun next time.
For your #SundayFunday, this is going to be a thread about a novel writing technique called "cartes noires" (black cards).
It is a creative writing framework that helps writers come up with a rather elaborate plot for a mystery novel in about 30 minutes using only a set of standard playing cards, a simple set of rules, and your imagination!
It took us a few minutes to figure out how to pick a default deck (you have to set the game mode to "Casual" when you create the game), but the interface is generally quite good (at least for someone who already knows how to play).
My son @milowyner is learning Japanese. For Christmas we got him this game because it looked interesting and was Japanese. He had to learn how to play it via translation.
It’s a blast. We’ve been having so much fun playing. So many strategies for such a simple card game. It’s a battle of wits, ruse, and memory.
Disney Lorcana is a fun game. It’s easy to play and the cards are fairly easy to understand. It’s still possible to get resource starved but not to the same extent as in Magic.
Played #Bohnanza for the first time last night in a bar. I'd heard of it before, but never got hooked into playing it. We didn't have time to play it properly before the bar closed, but I'm definitely interested in playing again! 🙂
