Them: "The CGI in The Flash (2023) is some of the worst CGI I've ever seen put to film."

Me: "Ugh. They always say that shit. People always have to find something to complain about, and it's never as bad as they say."

watches The Flash in HD

Me: "Oh. Oh my gods. Why do the babies look like dolls that have been left out in the sun to melt? And that dog! What's wrong with its FACE!? It looks like Milo from The Mask, while he was wearing the mask! Why does Batman look like he's wearing Jay Leno's chin with black marker used to mark his beard stubble? Holy fucking shit."

Mastodon has no quote posts, so let's see how it looks if I just paste that link about Disney's various camera/animation/CG innovations:

I've re-watched the original Beauty and the Beast recently and the CG ballroom is awesome. Especially the many reflections. #Disney introduced #CGI onto the big screen in a way that didn't show any shortcomings or limits of that tech. They immediately went to a level that even now looks very polished.

(caveat: I don't know the details. If somebody in the know told me "the reflections were actually hand-painted by 1000 monkeys because CG couldn't do it yet" I'm happy to correct myself 😉)

@wh0x3r I’ve been a professional #Perl #developer for sixteen years, which is now over half my #InformationTechnology career. That career started writing #SystemAdministration and #CGI scripts using the last version of #Perl4 and the first releases of #Perl5.

Was Perl core to all my past employers’ products? Not always. But it has been for the last half-dozen or so. I’ve been lucky to find them.

Follow @Perl if you want to network and learn from others like me.

I wonder if the 1974 movie "The Godfather Part II" would have been anywhere near as good or as memorable if it had been a computer-generated de-aged 50-year-old Marlon Brando playing Vito Corleone as a young man rather than a real-life 30-year-old Robert De Niro (who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance)? (This is a rhetorical question - I'm pretty certain most of us know the answer)

Also, the article below gives me a better understanding of the Star Trek: The Next Generation 1989 & 1991 episodes "Booby Trap" (where Geordi La Forge creates a very life-like hologram of Dr. Leah Brahms, the engineer who designed the Enterprise's warp drive, and falls in love with his computer-generated creation) & "Galaxy's Child" (where a year or so later the real Dr. Brahms comes aboard the Enterprise & is extremely unimpressed when she finds out La Forge had created a holographic likeness of her & romantically interacted with it).

People just don't like their images being used without their knowledge or permission.

"If a studio has the kit, not to mention the balls, to deepfake Tom Hanks into a movie he didn’t agree to star in, then it has the potential to upend the entire industry as we know it. It’s one thing to have your work taken from you, but it’s another to have your entire likeness swiped.

The issue is already creeping in from the peripheries. The latest Indiana Jones movie makes extensive use of de-ageing technology, made by grabbing every available image of Harrison Ford 40 years ago and feeding it into an algorithm. Peter Cushing has been semi-convincingly brought back to life for Star Wars prequels, something he is unlikely to have given permission for unless the Disney execs are particularly skilled at the ouija board. ITV’s recent sketch show Deep Fake Neighbour Wars took millions of images of Tom Holland and Nicki Minaj, and slapped them across the faces of young performers so adeptly that it would be very easy to be fooled into thinking that you were watching the real celebrities in action."

ELLIOTTCABLE, to programming

So, I’m low-key thinking of writing my first-ever graphics-heavy software. (Specifically, to do with VR / UIs, but not gaming.)

Thing is, my experience is with PLT & compilers, distsys, FOSS … but extremely not graphics, GPUs, or single-host performance of pretty much any kind.

I need advice. If I want to learn some relatively-low-level graphics stuff, but I have zero relevant background; where do I start?

Any resources for me (tutorials, books, well-known starter projects?)

(Also, any Mastodon accounts I should follow on this topic? Poke me if you're into this stuff and I'll follow you! :P)

When we say #retro, we mean it!

The very first computer animation of a human figure was already in 1965 by Michael Noll, and it is a ballet!

Look at these little stick figures doing a beautiful job, and think about #CGI now.
