An interesting article from Uncle Jim's worm farm on how to make yourself a screen to harvest your worm casting with a neat video.

It will help you separate the worms and the big debris from the compost.

Of course, you can use this tool for your regular compost pile.

@compost I've found a way to boost the compost process here is sunny Central Queensland.

It's been unseasonably dry (and unseasonably hot / cold / wet all around) and the compost had stalled even with some attention to keeping it damp.

Well I tried using a dilute solution of molasses (it's cheap around here as it's a stock food supplement).... and was amazed that the process restarted, ramped-up and escalated to a point where the compost is breaking down faster than ever before.

Obviously the extra nutrients for the microbiota were the solution.

@colhill @compost. Way to boost the microbes in the compost! The Nigel Palmer book of Regenerative garden solutions has molasses as a nutritional boost. However, molasses is relatively costly here in southern Minnesota. , .

Today is a warm and sunny day here. I am testing a new way to deal with the pathways of the vegetable garden.

Instead of using living pathways that are not easy to maintain, I am collecting the too many weeds that are growing in our area and then chopping them finely and dropping them in the pathways. They will dry out and turn into browns that will be digested. Then I keep layering on top of the brown layer.

I would like in the long run for those pathways to be a cold composting area and be able to shovel that compost back into the beds.

I would like to use our yard waste exclusively for this purpose.

Ok , our community garden has created separate bins for green and brown compost but the green is filling up much faster, what's the best approach for getting a healthy mix when we come to use it?

kate,
@kate@aus.social avatar

@furby @compost Brown is the one that you’ll need to save and mix in as required — green can become your actual compost right away. To get more browns (other than by letting some greens dry off), paper, card board all help. If local retailers (supermarkets, fruit shops) have a surplus of used cardboard boxes, ask if you can take some to the community garden and this may provide you with a regular source.

One of our best friends in the compost. It looks a bit like a wasp (this is entirely on purpose) but the adult Black Soldier Fly has no sting, no bite, doesn't eat any garden plants, and doesn't spread diseases. They just create more BSF larvae, who are absolute monsters when it comes to converting food waste to compost.

This one might have just hatched out of it's final pupal stage and is preparing to fly away to make amazing little compost munchers somewhere else.

We would like to give special thanks to @RickiTarr for reminding us how a social media like works.

It is not complicated, you have to be social, boost people, engage with them and try to unite users around hashtags.

We try to inspire the people of mastodon to be a solution for the and encourage them not only to reduce their waste in order to create black gold, but also to provide your place with a resilient topsoil that allows you to grow healthy and tasty food.

You can join us at and share with the community what you do for the climate.

Feeding the worm farm. On the menu today food scraps, dried roses, weeds from the yard, and a lot of bedding.

Over winter the composting worms have processed so much waste, it never ceases to amaze me.

We have just for our household about 2 bins of 40 US gallons/150kg of really good worm casting that is ready to be harvested. I could have made those numbers bigger if we had more space.

What have you done for the climate today?

If your worm bin attracts fruit flies here is why and what to do.

Cause: Food scraps exposed to air
Solution: Bury food completely

Cause: Rotten food
Solution: Avoid putting rotten food in bin.

Cause: Too much food
Solution: Don't overfeed worms

Always cover your worm bin with a lid and another layer on top of the compost like cardboard or a worm blanket.

Chop your scraps finely before adding them to the bin.

Every time you add a volume of green, add the same amount of browns.

By following those guidelines you can compost indoors without bugs or bad smells.

This winter our composting worms have multiplied a lot.

Maybe because the climate is warmer, I let them outside quite a few times and they have enjoyed that. Our house is arid and I have to check the moisture, at least every other day, if not daily.

The amount of waste those composting worms proceed never ceases to amaze me. I have so many worms that I will be able to create several wormeries outside when the temperatures are ok.

Now I only use worm compost to innoculate our compost piles and I am almost self-sufficient.

Composting worms is to me the most efficient way to fight the #climatechange at home or in an office.

@compost I just discovered your account! Do you have any recommendations on how people living in apartments can compost? What about with balconies in cold climates?

I've seen indoor devices, but I'm concerned about attracting ants, cockroaches, etc from other units.

zacawinter,

@legume @compost I live in a condo in Chicago and I use a tumbler composter on my back porch. It freezes every winter which stops the composting process but the weather usually warms up by the time the bin is full. The tumbler has positives and negatives but it works well for my situation.

is here for people who love composting and to share their journey.

The is real and sadly is being ignored by the elites. Am I revolted by this? absolutely. It is a crime against humanity that will have consequences for the next generations and life on this planet.

If you are a denier your comments will be blocked and reported, we don't have time to pick a fight with you or to give any visibility to those mediocre and toxic opinions.

We can create change by changing ourselves and by showing others how we do it. Since I have started this journey I have been surprised to see more and more people care about composting.

Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.
