"Government’s hydrogen strategy may sabotage decarbonisation: expert"

A bit old (originally from 2022), but still very valid. is the method of choice for the fossils to continue to do what they have been doing all along, and it gets in the way of cleaning up our act for a more sustainable future.

@Hypx
Well, already through the laws of science (2nd law of thermodynamics), an ICE has a ideal capping of efficiency as can be established by the Carnot cycle. A Diesel engine (as a very efficient member of the ICE family) for example can only convert about 40% of its chemical energy to be usable.

This is not yet even factoring in other problems and shortcomings of bringing into a (traditional) combustion process or the logistics chain on top of environmental impacts.

James Hansen: "Accelerated global warming is the first significant change of global warming rate since 1970. It is important because it confirms the futility of 'net zero' hopium that serves as present
energy policy and because we are running short of time to avoid passing the point of no return."

https://www.columbia.edu/~jeh1/mailings/2024/Hopium.MarchEmail.2024.03.29.pdf

Global Warming Acceleration: Hope vs Hopium 29 March 2024 James Hansen, Makiko Sato, Pushker Kharecha Accumulating evidence supports the interpretation in our Pipeline paper: decreasing human-made aerosols increased Earth’s energy imbalance and accelerated global warming in the past decade. Climate sensitivity and aerosol forcing, physically independent quantities, were tied together by United Nations IPCC climate assessments that rely excessively on global climate models (GCMs) and fail to measure climate forcing by aerosols. IPCC’s best estimates for climate sensitivity and aerosol forcing both understate reality. Preservation of global shorelines and global climate patterns — the world humanity is adapted to — likely will require at least partly reversing global warming. Required actions and time scale are undefined. A bright future for today’s young people is still possible, but its attainment is hampered by precatory (wishful thinking) policies that do not realistically account for global energy needs and aspirations of nations with emerging economies. An alternative is needed to the GCM-dominated perspective on climate science. We will bear a heavy burden if we stand silent or meek as the world continues on its present course.

"The government is being warned that tight electricity supply situations could become more frequent, especially on cold winter mornings and evenings.

...

The briefing said the government's dumping the aspirational goal of 100 percent renewable electricity by 2030 - and the Lake Onslow 'battery' project along with it - gave the ministry more room to work on the problem."

Please, not hydrogen (). It's actually much worse to the environment (green house gasses) than methane.

How?

phlogiston,
@phlogiston@mastodon.nz avatar

@strypey
H₂ is a climate heating gas. And, due to its tiny molecule (extremely low molecular weight of 2), it 'slips through' and is hard to contain. Also in logistics of it, a lot of 'boil off' and leakages do happen. That's why it's nothing that should be pushed to an end-user, but only used (if economically and ecologically sensible) to controlled industry.

Today's edition of 's Chronicles. A must-follow this election cycle.

(I know, I know -- it's on Substack. I emailed Rosenberg about that with receipts ... and he actually replied. Reading between the lines, I get the impression moving is his intent post-2024, but it's too far into this election cycle to rebuild the following/momentum on a new platform.)

    @thepoliticalcat SO tiresome — really wish they would all STFU. This is one of the reasons I subscribe to Simon Rosenberg’s Chronicles substack; he regularly cheerleads ’s economic accomplishments. https://www.hopiumchronicles.com/?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

    10 COLLAPSE-RELATED INEVITABILITIES in a future of ECOLOGICAL & SOCIETAL CERTAINTIES that most people cannot see, or will vehemently deny

    1. Most people will have a hard time trusting how & why civilization is collapsing.
    2. Abrupt climate change (rapid 2C+) locks in biospheric collapse & extinctions.
    3. Tipping points already crossed will be falsely framed as “still avoidable”.
    4. Without “Assisted Migration” love-in-action, most tree species will go extinct.
    5. Without urgent collective action, there will be dozens of nuclear meltdowns.
    6. As our biospheric % societal predicament worsens, so will our mental health.
    7. Most people will only reluctantly relinquish their faith in “the Almighty We”.
    8. If you proselytize only the 'doom' side of collapse reality, expect to be shunned.
    9. Most people will crave distraction — & anything that offers “hope”.
    10. Elite universities, the IPCC, mainstream media, politicians, & bestselling authors will remain first-rate LEGAL hopium dealers."

    Screen snip: Denial: the largely unconscious habit of thought whereby we refuse to accept the reality of things that are bad or upsetting - or that challenge our worldview, our legacy, how we live, what is required of us, and / or our feelings of self-worth or superiority. The instinctual impulse to reject or discount information that calls into question our hopes, assumptions, or expectations about the future."

    "DEFINITION OF HOPIUM: "A comforting vision of the future that requires breaking the laws of physics, biology, or ecology (such as thinking that we can slow, stop, or reverse the Great Acceleration of biospheric .) is especially dangerous to one’s mental & emotional health because, while it reliably provides short-term relief, without early treatment it even more reliably is followed by long-term grief & occasionally even severe depression when reality inevitably bites. But even more importantly, unless millions of us can break the hopium habit, I fear we will not have the collective will to do what we need to do to avoid being evil on a geological scale — i.e., by failing to ensure as few nuclear meltdowns as possible & assisting as many tree species as possible to pass through this bottleneck." - Michael Dowd

    From the WaPo article showing the FBI + Garland wouldn’t investigate trump for OVER A YEAR:

    Garland charted a cautious course…”more than a year would pass before prosecutors and FBI agents jointly embarked on a formal probe of actions directed from the White House to try to steal the election. Even then, the FBI stopped short of identifying the former president as a focus of that investigation”

    “But Oklahoma!”

    “Justice takes time!!”

    Where are the Garland apologists?

    ShrikeTron,

    @lednabm @flexghost @qotca Same. I muted TK long ago because 90% based equals very low credibility. Wrong too many times because Reality doesn't follow the "rules" -- without any self-consciousness. Worse than an AI.

    Laurence Tribe has also fallen into that slot, for me.

    TK also pumped RBG too, iirc, instead of seeing the damage done. Currently, Feinstein is repeating RBG's damage…
