Are there any good software/websites that let you add notes to a map?
I'd like to write down notes of places in China where friends live or I have visited, to help me learn the geography.
θύμον (thúmon) in Ancient Greek refers to thyme. Same as French "thym," oe Swedish "timjan." Some suggest that it comes from a pre-Greek word that simply refers to the plant. However, others proposed something interesting: what if it derives from θύω (thúō), meaning "to smoke"? Thyme has been burned to release its esences into the air since antiquity. It could be.
The shape model of the nucleus of Comet Halley was made by digitally manipulating a gridded ellipsoid of about the size of Halley (16 by 8 by 8 km) until its shape matched every image in the data set. There are no images suitable for stereoscopic viewing to add to the shape. This map shows the locations of limbs (edge of sunlit disk, dark lines) in the images and terminators (sunrise/sunset lines, gray areas). Uncertainties are quite large. #maps
Charles Owens was a prolific mapmaker and illustrator that conveyed the international complexities of WWII in a way that was accessible to the average person. People at the time even saved his maps as a point of reference, such as this for the perils of the submarine warfare of the Atlantic and beyond in 1943.
That let Abergel calculate the viewing direction for each image. I used that to estimate a shape represented by this set of images. Numbers define individual Vega images. Giotto basically zoomed in on a single view. The camera's mirror didn't survive to view the departing view. These grids can then be overlaid on images to try to locate features. There aren't many features to locate! #maps
I reprojected each image to fit the grids to a cylindrical map projection. Then I did the same reprojection with an identical but ungridded image. Fitting them together gave me this initial map.
You can follow and unfollow tags. Once followed you will see all posts with that tag on your home feed. Or you can use the search function e.g #maps, to all see recent posts
Unlike Canned Heat (showing my age) it’s not bullfrogs but #woodlands that are currently on my mind. And feeling the need to respond to them creatively, and high on their phytoncides, here’s some #Origami#Trees made out of old #Geology#Maps superimposed with the occasional #Photo of the #Woods that inspired me. #DoubleExposure#Abstract
Okay so with no show stoppers appearing, I've dropped Greater Northshore BIke Map 1.2 - Late May 2024, which shows bike infrastructure and adds preferred non-infrastructure routes between the Seattle and the new Eastside 2 Line Bike Connector maps.
It covers Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, Woodinville, Juanita, parts of north Redmond that the 2 Line leaves out, and a decent chunk of unincorporated NE King County.
Next up will be a revision of the MEGAMAP, a map that pastes together the Greater Northshore map and the two others into one big poster-sized beast.
Gives you some indication of the general direction of Massachusetts settlement: 15 Massachusetts towns are directional additions to other MA towns (eg Adams; North Adams). 7 are WEST, 5 are NORTH, 3 are EAST (and 2 of these, E. Bridgewater and E. brookfield also have a west and/or north counterpart), and 0 are SOUTH #boston#massachusetts#maps#newengland#usa
Do you get frustrated by other people's abstractions of geography? Do you have strong preferences about hex cartogram layouts of UK constituencies for the next election? Do you have a better feel than me for parts of the UK outside Yorkshire? If so, please help improve our open source layout of future UK constituencies.
The first time we saw this altered history of Chicago, we laughed and laughed, had always encountered small original versions of the print in books, and thought it was so creative.
But now I worry that centuries in the future a conspiracy theorists will anchor their arguments with the altered image.
