@mastohost
Hey, I just got an email from saying my service "will be suspended on the 1st of next month if [I] don't create a new subscription".

New subscription??

The SPAM wave has caused ppl to beg for server providers to start acting like police officers, like a Zuckerberg or Musk, to resolve the issue

The problem is that now action is being taken without consent from the perceived affected servers. On , a moderation-task automation script has been run. And now we've opened a Pandora's box about what sorts of future, nonconsensual interventions, that providers will allow themselves.

In short: this is a dangerous precedent.

Alas, the Mastodon spam wave found my instance. Anything I can do aside from turning off notifications?

Some must be hosted Mastodon servers. I know one instance on @mastohost where the admin passed away in June 2022 after setting up its instance in April 2022 but it is still going and upgraded to the current security release in autopilot. However, that instance is set to be auto approved, so it isn't contributing to the spam.

I think this instance has had 2 updates since I started with @mastohost. Utter no-brainer for the non-tech person. If you have ever thought of carving out your space in the , I recommend . Nope, he's not paying me.

@cas
We were just wondering. You do know that 2020 was a time of increased concentration of wealth, right?

400 billion to the top 1 percent, or something akin to that.

You have seen the money supply chart, and the quadrupling of it (in Australia, sixtupled). It is not "deranged" to talk about this stuff in the context of technology, given the types of discussions at the time, including quotes from US congresspersons. Heck Trump wanted forced sale of a tech company to Oracle. Stay well.

dsfgs,

@gabriel
We were on @dsfgs for 2.5 years. Limited at 173 followers. Only after the instance shutdown a day early on 7 Oct 2023 did we learn that it was being hosted by a large -centred operation called (domain is masto.host).

We thought it was being operated by the whole time, and that only the was masto.host — nope.

A lot makes sense years after the fact.

While we don't anticipate any issues, if you experience any, please let @cliffwade or @kylewritescode know as soon as possible so we can see about getting it fixed.

If there's one thing I learned while running my own instance (and later hosting on ), it's that using relays consume an inordinate amount of storage because you're literally plugging into that instance's firehose and saving it all to disk.

Following communities is the same.

Food for thought for @nodebb's implementation. How can we minimize the impact on servers while maintaining the ability to consume relays and such?

Hey admins and techies, is there some kind of recent bug going around which can explain the sudden spike in media storage?

Our 100GB storage increased by 3GB in just 1 night, and this is AFTER I LOWERED the retention time for storing of remote media and blocked image downloads from mastodon.social

The issue preventing the feeds from refreshing last night and this morning have now been fixed. This was due to a bug in the update to Mastodon 4.1.5 yesterday and the awesome folks at @mastohost figured it out and got it patched this morning.

We certainly apologize for any inconveniences this might have caused and appreciate your patience during this time!

Sorry to hear that @mastohost is having some downtime due to their upstream hosting company. I wonder if this is due to the recent influx of new/returning users to Mastodon?

I need Mastodon and Kubernetes help:

I am trying to deploy Mastodon to a GCP GKE Autopilot cluster. The Helm chart is failing due to container sysctl calls somewhere getting blocked because GKE does not allow them.

I don't know where to look to investigate where these calls are being made to see if I might avoid them from being made. Any ideas?

@Jeremiah@alpaca.gold avatar

Update: the issue is the Elasticsearch Bitnami chart dependency, not Mastodon itself. I found a managed service offering to use instead.

However, removing all of the Bitnami dependencies then unveils a transitive dependency that is not yet fully fixed: https://github.com/mastodon/chart/pull/60

I think my only option is to maintain a fixed fork temporarily. I have nearly bled to death from the papercuts at this point. 🤣

Over the month of May 20, 2023 - Jun 18, 2023, https://toot.works has seen three new sign-ups, 16 active users, and 1,085 interactions.

It is a small instance but we are using the https://infosec.exchange relay, so the federated feed is hopping.

Application for registration is open, if anyone is interested in joining.

It seems there's even some delay on my powerful instance, but only for some minutes or so. I'm deducing this based on the notification flood. Or then the issues are all round, not sure which way. Even struggling? causes quite a heavy server load.

    @jwildeboer Yeah, I see even 50 minutes delay now from your instance and various delays from other Mastohost instances. I just saw you posting about Spain and Norway is up now. It's shared hosting so it won't handle the stress from this activity. @mastohost
