Been working on a cover of Bryan Adams song Run To You and have been struggling a lot with the guitar sound. All of the Les Paul’s have way too much low end & sound really muddy. The amount of EQ required to “fix” this is ridiculous. The Strat actually works really well. So the takeaway is that a $150 Squier works better here than a $6000 Gibson.

Now I know why Bryan plays a Strat.🤔🙄😬😂

A couple of years ago I recorded a very short, but somewhat intense, rainstorm with hail and thunder. And now I'm sharing it with you. Put on some headphones and relax.

Does anyone who records vocal audio have any thoughts on why my waveform amplitude seems so small on the recording software?

I’m having to turn the interface gain to almost max just to capture even that.

The presets I’m using in Audacity are in line with tutorials I’ve seen, so it’s not that.

And I know it’s not which USB port the interface is connected to on my laptop. But aside from that, maybe the mic itself (a Shure SM-58)? Maybe the cabling or a connection somewhere?

Well, I’m now beyond frustrated with Apple. Was working with Apple Loops in Logic this morning, went to use the search feature, picked a filter and now all the loops are totally gone. I reindexed them, nothing; reinstalled & reindexed them, nothing. Deleted the preference file, rebooted, nothing. Lost all my settings when I deleted the preferences too. So looking like I need to delete anything Logic related for preferences & logs the reinstall Logic. 🤬

Really hate tech sometimes. Was listening to a tune I've been working on for the past couple of weeks yesterday & suddenly the speakers cut out. After doing a number tests rearranging cables I've determined that outputs 1 & 2 on the Apogee Symphony are no longer functional. Have to take it in now for a warranty repair, which is likely to take weeks. Really frustrated, & thinking that after all the issues I've had the past year I've chosen the wrong hobby.

I would like to record some game play footage from my XBOX to my M1 MacBook Air. I don’t need a webcam (no wants to see me 😀). I will add some subtitles to it later. I don’t need to stream.

Any ideas on how to do this?

Well, go figure. I’m now totally perplexed. Powered the system up this morning, and it works. Nothing different from yesterday when it wasn’t working, just an 18 hour power down.

So what’s my take away here? Firstly, I’ve lost all faith in the Presonus interface. Secondly, I’ve bought myself some extra time to explore alternatives, but an alternative will have to be found. Thirdly, I need to make hay while the sun is shining.

Readers: sometimes there are risks to working with up-and-coming so-called "producers" at agencies:

"Why does the bass on this sound so, I don't know, old?"

"The sheet called for standup bass, so I used an upright bass."

"You mean the huge jazz things?"

(Gears grinding in my head.) "Sure, some jazz people use them."

"When I wrote 'standup' I guess I meant 'proper' and bumpin'. Can you redo it with a proper bass? And use a pedal or something?"

This time I decided to leave my perfectionism behind!

No three months of work on tiniest minor changes. Instead I recorded, mixed and mastered this track in 5 days.

Are there any bluetooth headsets with 'studio quality' mics so to speak?

I have a Audio-Technica BPHS1 set, I'd like a not-in-the-PC-room set of headphones for streaming that are as close to that as I can get without a crazy price

is Charles Lloyd’s recent “The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow”

I played this record in the car 🚘 and decided to hear it in the lounge. I started in Apple Spatialize Audio but it was rubbish and switched to via . The haze cleared up. Apple compresses the main channels to make all the Dolby Atmos other stuff fit in an AirPods Pro pipe. The Maggies didn’t like it. Tubby bass.

In the new house, there is no carpet and all the ceilings are really high. Realized last night after loading my vocal recordings into Audacity, it sounds like I'm in a huge cave.

  1. Does have any decent fixes for this? I know I can silence the gaos where I'm not actually talking but what about while I'm speaking?

  2. For voice-over stuff I guess I could record in my clothes closet but anything I can do in room to cut down on hollow effect for other times?

Well the Presonus Quantum 4848 is removed from the rack and awaiting its final disconnection from my system. The Apogee Symphony arrived at the L&M Ontario depot from California a couple of days ago, so it should be here soon. Getting excited now.

I'm looking for a pistol grip/shockmount system for a Rode NT4 stereo microphone. The Rode PG2-R is a thing that comes up a lot, and it's designed for shotgun microphones. Having never seen one of these, is there any reason why it wouldn't work with an NT4, which is not a shotgun? Would it's internal cable management system prevent this combination from being used?

Back in business, the Apogee Symphony MKII is now integrated into my studio and working like a charm. Will probably retire the Apogee Quartet that has been my workhorse for over a decade. So glad that I have made this switch from the Presonus Quantum 4848. The Symphony is vastly superior.

Panning across my studio showing my fully functional system. I've always use Doug & the Slugs song Tomcat Prowl for testing my systems.

This recording is going along swimmingly! Just back from a break to walk the dog. I'm getting the hang of the basics of Reaper on Linux.

Once I get going, the workflow is soooo much nicer than audacity or ,dare I say, my trusty old 4-track. Certainly wouldn't have the flexibility to double mic everything and balance condenser with dynamic everywhere!

Time to start paying attention to all those free VST posts in my timeline I guess!
