While I agree with the @fsf warning about the emblematic value of the decision by #Google to pull support for #JpegXL from #Chrome, their article <https://u.fsf.org/3z8> is as empty as could be, especially considering that #GNU#IceCat doesn't support JPEG XL either (being based on a #Firefox branch that doesn't build #JXL support in.) You want to show that #FLOSS can do without? Do it by actually supporting what you complain Google is failing to.
Well, this is interesting: there is already a community-supported patch for #Chromium derivatives that restores #JpegXL suppot https://github.com/Alex313031/thorium-libjxl
I'm looking forward to it being adopted by Linux distributions that roll their own Chromium, and by other Blink-based browsers with a claimed interest in open standards (glances at #VivaldiBrowser@Vivaldi)
"Microsoft Edge now leaks the address of every web page you visit straight to Microsoft Bing. This appears to be a bug with one of the many extra features Microsoft has been cramming into Edge over the past few years. We’ve had enough." https://www.howtogeek.com/888506/stop-using-microsoft-edge/
Just completed a 2023 project: to "DeChromify" myself.
I wanted to move away from Chrome due to the privacy and security issues I've heard it has. I've chosen #FireFox as my browser of choice, though I was tempted with Brave for a while. I think Firefox is good enough.
@Vivaldi I'm a long time #vivaldibrowser user and I discovered this test https://privacytests.org/ . Can you comment on the result? As far as privacy is concerned, Vivaldi is not doing very well.
@MIfoodie@Vivaldi Maybe that's a mistake. If a browser claims to protect user privacy, it should be stricter, or at least have the ability to set privacy controls in more detail. So far I have been a happy user of #vivaldibrowser, but after this test I am already in doubt. So far only the tabs on the side and the web panels are holding me back. I'd rather skip such detailed customization, email client and notes and get more privacy.
I don't think people appreciate the role that #OperaSoftware played in fostering the #OpenWeb and #IndieWeb during the first #browserWar (when the #OperaBrowser was still built on their proprietary #Presto engine), and a fortiori the role it had in their demise (when they switched to being “just another #WebKit/#Blink skin”), despite their browser never even reaching a 3% market share.
The #VivaldiBrowser is the closest thing we have to an “swiss army knife for the open Internet” today, and yet it doesn't even have feature parity with the late Opera/Presto. For example, it has no IRC client.
But in the context of my vision for the #Fediverse, the most glaring omission is the lack of an equivalent to Opera Unite, an incentive to the development of easy-to-deploy self-hosted websites.
@unattributed Just like with your last poll too, i see only your pre-poll descriptive / explanatory posts, then your post-poll commentary posts. I do not see your actual polls themselves. Huh?
Do you not use hashtags for the browsers in your polls? If not, then peeps like me who only follow tags NOT peeps, will never see your polls.
