  1. Meta/Facebook has a horrific track record on human rights:
  1. Meta/Facebook is trying to join the Fediverse. We need to defederate them.

  2. If you're a server admin, please defederate Meta's domain "threads.net" (here's how on Mastodon https://fedi.tips/how-to-defederate-fediblock-a-server-on-mastodon/)

  3. If you don't run your own server, please ask your server admin to defederate "threads.net". Your admin is listed on your server website's About page.

@AudraTran Tolerating intolerance can happen over any information transfer mechanism.

I don't think any of the accounts covered by the current Threads beta has been intolerant, but I have heard there are intolerant organizations with a current presence of Threads.

Federation that included transferring their intolerance would be tolerating intolerance.

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@AudraTran @feditips For now, I'm going to try to stay on an instance that will federate with threads.net, but if an instance thinks defederation is the best way to serve/protect their users, they should do so.

Sometimes a "net split" is the healthiest solution. Intolerance cannot be tolerated, if we are to preserve tolerance.

Comet 1P/Halley is at aphelion today, its furthest from the Sun, starting the long journey back towards its next close encounter in 2061.

I saw Halley in 1986 & it has long been my hope to see it again.

I’ll be 100 in 2061.

And while we’re at it, let’s build a new mission to Halley in the footsteps of ESA’s Giotto, Rosetta, & Comet Interceptor.

To rendezvous with it, fly alongside, & return again in 2134.

Our message to the future.

@markmccaughrean I was 6 when I saw it the first time. Even then, I thought about the chance to see it again. A chance many humans never get, due to the accident of their birthdate.

A Rosetta-like mission, to fly along-side it for 75 years, sounds both Ambitious (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32vlOgN_3QQ) and very awesome.

It is already amazing that we can now image it at aphelion, something that would have been beyond the dreams of most during the last aphelion.

Starting next month, student loan borrowers enrolled in SAVE “who took out less than $12,000 in loans and have been in repayment for 10 years will get their remaining student debt cancelled immediately.” - President Biden in a statement https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/01/12/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-early-student-debt-cancellation-for-borrowers-enrolled-in-save/

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@w7voa I don't have student loans.
This is such a small effort for such a large problem that it makes me a bit angry. It's like multiple generations are dying of thirst, and the administration has decided to urinate on them.

First, there should be an immediate halt to repayment schedules and collections activity (not only garnishment, but also harassing contact).

Second, massive forgiveness focusing on workers, possibly prioritized by industry.

Third, free quality post-secondary education.

Hey librarians!

I saw this question somewhere else, so I thought I’d ask it here.

If the you were trapped inside of your library in the dead of winter with no power or heat, which books would you burn first for warmth?

Please boost to get to more librarians!

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@Mrfunkedude Not a librarian, but I'd go with duplicate copies first, then translations if we have multiple.

After that, I start thinking periodicals and A/V sources (books on tape, audio book CDs, movies on BD, DVD, or VHS / Beta, etc.), but I bet the heat from dups, managed properly, will let me survive long enough to start growing the collection again.

A question for those of you who utilize the alt text in pics. What are your feelings on apps or people who use A.I. to generate the descriptions? Are you for or against, and why?

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@Mrfunkedude I'm against the use of generative software where the training set has unknown or poor providence. I'm against calling LLMs or other generative software "AI". I'm against poor quality alt text, independent of source, when the quality is poor enough to inhibit rather than enhance the experience, especially for people that require alt text for accessibility.

But, if you have a training set you can morally consume and redistribute, and the output is of sufficiently high quality, use!

Hello all!

StrangeLoop is gone, and I'm left looking for a quality programming/technology conference to deplete my limited event funds.

What events do you attend whenever possible? Or that look promising?

No wrong answers! Feel free to boost for visibility, too!

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@penryu I prefer ICFP over StrangeLoop, and I hear POPL is also cool. But, a lot of the ACM conferences migrate, so regular attendance can have excessive travel costs.

Best of luck in your search for a replacement.

I'm glad I'm seeing more on my main Mastodon feed. I'm a bit sad it's "all" podcasts and videos. I greatly prefer text (with selective images / animations): easier to consume at my speed or non-linearly and easier to quote in discussion here or on Lemmy/KBin.

Thanks for all the great content, tho!

I wish I had the discipline to finish my Haskell-like.

@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

Does anyone else do with without ? The main agda-vim plugin doesn't work at all. The tc-0 fork does some things, but mostly emits bytes v str errors. Last time I tried the agda-language-server, I couldn't get it to compile.

I think some tooling will let me put together this evaluate function a lot faster.

How feasible would it be to start a mass tech walkout to protest all of these layoffs?

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi As a tech worker that would prefer a union, I think it is only marginally more feasible to organize a tech worker walkout than it is to organize a U.S. general strike.

It's quite a bit easier since there are many fewer persons to organize. But, we are, on average harder to organize for a diverse, but not unusual, set of reasons.

Build finished, branch updated, got to go! Good luck!

Fedi: do int2Word# and similar operations have a runtime cost? I assume 'no', but I'd like to be sure.

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@koz I'm not sure but I think https://github.com/ghc/ghc/blob/bf3d4db0894233ec72f092a4a34bce9ed4ff4e21/compiler/GHC/Builtin/primops.txt.pp#L817 says that actually no code is emitted for that prim op, which would mean no runtime cost.

Hopefully, a expert will come through and confirm or correct me.

Of course, that's not part of the language spec, or the public API of GHC, so it could change on a whim. (It won't.)

So, I've long known MS Excel is a POS that only survives off momentum and lock in, but I at least expected that it could write out CSV files

Yes, it has the option, but then it uses semicolon (not comma) as the delimiter! Some idiot thought the delimiter should be based on your list separator character in your localization settings.

Best bit? MS Excel doesn't have an option to use semicolon (or localized character) as a delimiter on input. So it can't open the invalid CSV it generates.

I've decided I do not like being either too hot or too cold and demand that more neutral temps become the norm.

Now who do I have to talk to to get this done?

BoydStephenSmithJr,
@BoydStephenSmithJr@hachyderm.io avatar

@Mrfunkedude I think temperature adjustments go to the cabal behind the IPCCC, so officially you'll need to address the UN.
