Have you ever had to change anything because you felt it was no longer relevant?

I wrote a story a few years ago and I'm polishing it up now for publication and noticing how a few references have dated soooo quickly.

@golgaloth yes, tech changes very quickly but so do social attitudes. My books from 2012 seem dated now. And then there are international changes and Covid and natural disasters, impossible to keep up.

Salad on the hoof.

CaraBruar,

@sfwrtr they sound fantastic! I tried to grow radishes but failed. I use the red ones all the time in salads or as part of mixed baked veggies.

CaraBruar,
@CaraBruar@sfba.social avatar

@sfwrtr is that a white radish? Do they taste the same as red ones? I don't think I've ever seen one.

CaraBruar,
@CaraBruar@sfba.social avatar

@sfwrtr sandy soil is something I absolutely do not have. I could try fern mix in pots maybe? The garden is a clay bog with a thin layer of soil that I have painstakingly created.

@CaraBruar@sfba.social avatar

Fantasy need not be epic! My first fantasy is out now. The Tyrant of Spite is a light-hearted novella with coming of age and romance themes. Nothing epic or grim, I went for a very light touch with a little magic.

I designed the cover using a licensed image from Tithi Luadthong (@grandfailure on iStock) and Photoshop. This wonderful illustration inspired the story.

Available now from Amazon as an ebook.

I've been writing for so many years and I still get caught up on Discrete vs Discreet. Do any of you have words you struggle with?

CaraBruar,
@CaraBruar@sfba.social avatar

@golgaloth It's and its. So many times where I really think there should be an apostrophe because it's possessive but in fact there is not. It is extremely confusing!

Really enjoyed Judge Dee Mysteries on Netflix, stories about an incorruptible magistrate during the Tang dynasty. Hope season 2 starts soon, I have withdrawal symptoms. . https://www.netflix.com/au/title/81761553

Door mat purchased in 1974 when we married and set up house.
Supposely recycled tyres or may be manufacturing waste since there were factories in Adelaide, South Australia, back then.
Has been in continuous use at all the places we've lived since 1974.
It's probably good for another 50 years.

Bushfires in Victoria are about 350 to 400 km from us but the smoke from them has arrived here this afternoon.

This is a screenshot from our backyard PurpleAir quality sensor. Best to stay inside.

I never answer these feedback requests. My time is valuable - if they want feedback, they can pay for it.

The most annoying words online: ‘We’d like to hear from you. How did we go?’ https://www.smh.com.au/culture/books/the-most-annoying-words-online-we-d-like-to-hear-from-you-how-did-we-go-20231212-p5eqwk.html

@timrichards these companies are so emotionally needy it's amazing they can turn the lights on each day without someone to tell them what a great job they're doing

My photo of Hobart, Tasmania, from 2010. I like the foreshortening effect that compresses all the layers together. It might make a good (difficult) jigsaw.

“Scrollbars are becoming a problem”

The current state of scrollbars is, on the face of it, objective evidence that the people who run tech do not give a single solitary fuck about usability or UX https://artemis.sh/2023/10/12/scrollbars.html

CaraBruar,
@CaraBruar@sfba.social avatar

@baldur back in the 90s we naively expected UX to improve in the future. Who knew it would get so much worse?

My photo from 2017. Bamboo window covering in tea house, Japanese Gardens, Cowra, New South Wales. During WW2 Cowra was a prisoner of war camp. There was a mass escape with many casualties. This garden is a memorial.

My photo, best I've ever taken. I'm very proud of it.

Healthy self-seeded herbs from last year's plantings that I left to go to seed.
The idea was that if that patch was hard to maintain and grew weeds, it might as well grow a wider variety of plants that support insects.
It worked! I'm surprised, we've had a very frosty winter and where they grow is quite exposed.
Now all I need is recipes for using up all that fresh dill and coriander. Or I can just leave them there to seed again.

Messy self-seeded herbs and meadow flowers from last year. Plants include erigeron, a small white daisy, also many leafy coriander plants, some white corn flowers on long stems, and some dill. A tree grows in the middle of the bed, a callistemon with rough bark.

The surfing movie "The Endless Summer". I liked it as a tween. Later I couldn't see why. Possibly I entirely missed the point of it both times. But it did have some nice scenery, beaches and ocean.

I've added new content to my Gumroad store. Now you can enjoy poetry, science fiction short stories, a full length mystery novel or a full length romance.

I've republished these with new covers as the world needs brighter content. Over the next few days I'll share each one.

My photo of Weereewa / Lake George New South Wales, north east of Canberra.
This is a shallow lake that dries out during droughts. At the time of Australian federation in 1901 it was considered as a possible site for the new capital. In the end Canberra was chosen.
A former Federal treasurer complained about how much he hated the wind turbines on the far side.
One of my better images, I think because there is more light and shade contrast than usual. Or the lake is just very photogenic.

I'm proud to announce the ebook release of my first poetry anthology, "Emerging Fully Weird". I'm proud of the cover too, created by me using a licensed stock illustration. I think it captures the spirit of my poems very well.
