With wildfire smoke season here, we all need to think about air quality inside where we spend most of our time. This article provides multiple examples measuring the air quality inside my home from wildfire smoke and cooking.
Summer is almost upon us, and Canada is already on fire, so I guess it's time to share this again: my guide to the dangers of smoke, why you really don't want to breathe it, and how to get your air purifier situation set up before the smoke comes.
#Mexico, #Guatemala, #Belize all experiencing extreme record breaking heatwaves accompanied by widespread wildfires and smoke danger. (Image 1 showing increased risk of heat-humidity stress days as we continue to heat)
Instrument readings:
+1.63ºC 12-month running mean above preindustrial (Berkeley Earth/ERA5 datasets)
+1.3ºC latest 5-year average above preindustrial
This is your reminder that the smoke from forest fires is not just tree smoke.
It's smoke from burnt buildings, burnt vehicles, burnt animals, and everything the fire has destroyed in its path.
Check air quality often (several times a day) and be prepared to protect yourself and loved ones, including your pets, if need be.
Time for my periodic #filter thread now that #smoke season is heating up. Make sure to ignore manufacturer's recommendations on room size for air purifiers and go right to the CADR rating. Room size should be about 1.5x CADR.
It's happening for a second straight year: Dozens of wildfires are burning across Canada and sending unhealthy smoke blowing into the northern U.S., and at the same time, the southeastern U.S. is getting smoke from fires in Mexico.
" #Wildfires have led Environment #Canada to issue air quality advisories for parts of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories, as forecasters warn the #smoke could drift farther east.
According to the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre(opens in a new tab), there are currently 138 active wildfires across the country, including 40 that are considered "out of control." "
"New research shows that the health consequences of wildfire smoke exposure stretch well beyond the smoky days themselves, contributing to nearly 16,000 deaths each year across the U.S., according to a National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) analysis released in April."
Here is Stephen Lecce politicizing #Ontario education ...
"We progressive Conservatives REDUCED the fuel tax by 10 cents/litre.
The Liberals will INCREASE the carbon tax by 23%. As if it isn't expensive enough to live."
👉 It appears that the Ontario Minister of Education doesn’t know how to convert percentages to cents-a-litre.
Narrator: It’s 3 cents a litre.
It also appears that clean air, both inside & outside the classroom, is not #DougFord's agenda.
