    @peter I think a bit of it is people discovering he wasn't the all-evil-all-the-time cartoon villain they'd been told about. A fellow who teaches a terrorism class says he sees surprise in his students when they learn that. And in our binary thinking, finding out someone bad was right about something can lead to some messed-up conclusions.

    Getting people to the level of "he had some legitimate grievances, some bad ones, and took very bad actions and is overall bad" is hard.

    Well regulated militia strikes again

    22 dead (number still rising), over 60 injured in Lewiston, Maine. One suspect in custody. Another on the loose.

    Oh, it’s disputable. According to local reports, the gunman was shot by an armed secured guard, not a random armed civilian.

    More importantly perhaps, the report reveals that the gunman was spotted by a valet attendant and reported to the security guard, who told the attendant there was nothing he could do, since open carry is legal in Nevada.

    They had to sit there and wait for him to shoot first.

    Then, when he did, but his gun jammed, they shot him in the back as he fled the building.

    @Mayor_of_Smartarse @KagroX and when it does happen, as in Arvada, the police come in and shoot dead the "good guy with a gun," because they pull up to the scene of a reported shooting and see someone with a gun.

    @pixel living in Houston, with massive white-box (Shipley's) donut saturation, it's never occurred to me that donut boxes in other parts of the world are usually pink! Is that everywhere or just a few big cities?

    It’s really hard to overstate how acutely dangerous this is: All strands of the Right - leading Republicans, the media machine, the reactionary intellectual sphere, the conservative base - are openly and aggressively embracing rightwing vigilante violence.
