Why do you follow me?

EvilKiru,

@RickiTarr I thought I was following you when I voted on your poll, but that was just an illusion from how often you are boosted into my timeline, so I immediately followed you to correct my mistake of not having followed you long ago and to make my vote true (nice, foster community)

Boiled down to its essential components, the continuing plot line of the "Resident Alien" TV series is that the planet Earth is saved from destruction at the hands of extraterrestrials by ... pizza. Works for me.

geez I had no idea the feedback loop for mobile was so wonky

"When apps crash on iOS, the crash will not be reported until the app is relaunched."

https://www.cncf.io/blog/2024/03/25/why-you-may-be-dropping-key-mobile-data-from-your-observability-solution/

EvilKiru,

@paigerduty Our attempt to avoid that problem involves our desktop program checking on launch to see if the version currently available for download is > the version you just ran, in which case it downloads the new installer in the background, so as long as you don't try to do the same thing that crashed it earlier, it pops up a dialog the next time you return to the main screen, asking if you would like to go ahead and install the new version.

And if you did manage to get to the point where the program crashed again, then when you restart it again, it checks to see if it managed to download the new installer before the crash, and asks you if you would like to go ahead and install the just downloaded program update!

It works most of the time, except when someone thinks that setup should finish instantly, so they go back to the desktop and double-click the program icon, and then don't notice when the installer eventually fails because it can't replace the running program file...

Here is the structure of a How-To article:

[An introduction with a bunch of crap written by Chat-GPT]

[An initial example using the built-in plugin/theme editor, demonstrating the author's disregard to best practices and urging others to be unprofessional]

[A screenshot of some scary-looking PHP code]

[A section claiming how difficult and technically involved the previous step was, suggesting there's an alternative]

[A plug for the author's plugin that does the thing you want]

EvilKiru,

@alda to me, all PHP code is scary-looking. After all, PHP seems to have been the most widely hacked web-facing computer language on the planet with attackers rarely needing to trick someone into downloading and running exploit code to initiate an attack, due to how many PHP packages had configuration files that were world-writable by default and all an attacker needed to know was the widely known path to such "secret" files, which was why our web server log files were always chock-full of failed script-kiddie exploit attempts.

Is there any way to disable alt text in the web interface? I'm so sick of having a big block of text pop up and obscure the picture I'm looking at just because I did not carefully thread my mouse through the little channel between the image and the scroll bar.

A thousand curses upon whoever thought, "ooooh, I know, I'll just copy the ALT attribute to the TITLE attribute, those are the same, right?"

EvilKiru,

@jwz I just hit Esc to close the pop-up when that happens.

I’m seeing a concerning trend of webpages that are designed for dark mode only. They present light-text-on-a-dark-background all the time. There is no light mode. No respecting the user’s preference.

I literally cannot read white text on dark backgrounds. At least not more than a few words worth. It’s weird to slowly have more and more of the web become unusable to me.

Do better.

It’s super easy to provide both. We should all provide both.

EvilKiru,

@jensimmons I tried enabling dark mode in Edge a while back due to light mode making it hard for me to read sites, but from what I recall, it didn't work, didn't work on all light mode sites, or is no longer included. I found the Sauron extension, which works in both Edge and Chrome to make most sites readable, with white text on a darkened background. I run it on all my Windows computers. Without it, the brightness is too high. Reducing my monitor's brightness does nothing to make light mode sites easier to read for me.

Wait — do Americans register their party affiliation with the government?

    EvilKiru,

@_jv_ @alda some, but not all states, ask your party affiliation when you register to vote, but from what I understand that's mainly to prevent you from voting in the other party's primary election and you do not have to declare your party affiliation to vote in the actual election.

Could you please help me find some folklore?

The Brothers Grimm recorded the story "Der süße Brei" about a magic porridge pot.
When instructed, it produces food until told to stop. One day, the owner forgets the magic word and the village is engulfed in porridge.

If you are NOT German or English-speaking, does your culture have a similar cautionary tale?
If so, what foodstuff is it about?

    Thanks gang, boosts appreciated.

    EvilKiru,

@Edent Icelandic hafragrautur (porridge), but it's almost certainly from the same source that the Brothers Grimm collected their story from, if not from a translation of their stories.
